Going to Cvs or Taco Bell is usually an invitation for some desperate person to rapidly approach you and violate your personal space.
I especially take issue with well groomed, clean individuals standing less than five feet from Five guys making it impossible to enter without an interaction with them.
One woman has a very shiny, well maintained bald head. Her regular spot is far too close to the entrance of Five Guys.

I shave mine in solidarity with a family member on chemo and I have stubble by 1pm, if this person can keep it up that well they arent homeless or even marginally housed.
I am well aware people are moving out of nursing and group homes en masse into section 8 subsidized apartments into the zipcode, maybe their caseworkers will see this and address the issue a bit better.

As to the bald woman panhandler, how do you know she isn't going through chemo herself? (Cancer can be expensive enough to impoverish a patient, especially if she loses her job and then her insurance). It can take weeks after finishing chemo for hair to begin growing in, and in a small % of cases the chemo med Taxotere can cause permanent baldness (especially when an aromatase inhibitor--which blocks estrogen production--is taken with or afterward). Also, she might have alopecia (usually genetic or idiopathic), in which there is no regrowth. Don't assume she has the resources to go shave her head regularly in order to scam pedestrians.

That being said, panhandlers can be bothersome--but in this case, at least they're on the sidewalks instead of walking through traffic, a road rage incident or tragic accident waiting to happen.

Loyola Redline Mugging This Weekend

I'm not seeing it in the news yet but apparently a young man was mugged Saturday night and has now died from the head trauma he sustained. A friend of his posted this on facebook. "He was found early Saturday morning at the Loyola station in Chicago. He was laying at the bottom of the stairs with his wallet missing and with serious head trauma."
This is all the info I have and just wanted my neighbors to be aware.

  • I don’t think there is a question about the cameras working. Still waiting to hear more on what transpired.

The 49th Ward Democratic Party is one of over 100 "supporting groups" that are providing support and marchers for the March to the Polls, the Second Annual Women’s March on Chicago, taking place this Saturday, January 20th.

We are sponsoring a bus that will take you directly to the site of the rally and march at the intersection of Congress Parkway and Columbus Drive and bring you back to Rogers Park that afternoon after the march and rally have ended.

Meet us this Saturday, January 20th, 9:00 a.m., at the 49th Ward Democratic Party office, 1774 W. Greenleaf (at Ravenswood). We will have complimentary coffee and donuts to help get your morning started.

Space for the bus is filling up quickly, so please RSVP as soon as possible to guarantee yourself a seat. To RSVP, visit:

https://goo.gl/forms/QPLLXYAcnHocT2Xi1

Complete the form, letting us know how many people will be joining you. Or call us at 773-973-4949.

Last year, we packed three buses with over 150 Rogers Park residents, who traveled downtown to join 250,000 women and their allies who raised their voices for issues each of us hold dear. That historic day embodied the ongoing fight for women’s rights.

This Saturday, we will come together again to celebrate the spirit of the resistance efforts over the past year and unite to focus on the 2018 elections and beyond.

The 49th Ward is clearly strong and united and the March to the Polls this Saturday is an important act of resistance. Please join us for this historic march.

Christmas Tree Pickup/Recycle? - YES!

I just wanted to give an enthusiastic shout-out to the non-profit group, Do The Right Thing - Recycling (http://dtrt-recycling.org/). They just came to my 3rd floor walkup (yes, at 8pm on a Saturday!) and did an exceptional job removing my tree and taking it to be recycled. Well worth the door-to-door $25 donation/charge. (It's only $15 if you meet them at the curb.) Check them out and schedule away your worries of the schlep.

Tree Recycling Program - Do The Right Thing! Recycling
Do The Right Thing! Recycling is offering holiday tree pickup services for the north side of Chicago. We pick up your tree directly from your living room floor. We come equipped with reusable tarps and cords, and all we ask is that you remove all decorations from the trees including lights and tinsel.

The new deployments come at a time when the 49th Ward is experiencing a significant decrease in gun violence.

Despite a series of horrific shooting incidents last fall, which included the death of school teacher Cynthia Trevillion and the injury of a young man who was a target of gang recruitment, the 49th Ward last year experienced a 33% decrease in homicides as compared to 2016 and a 31% decrease in shooting incidents.

The reduction in shooting incidents continued a trend that began two years ago. Since 2015, the 49th Ward has seen a 42% decrease in shootings.

That's privately owned property on Morse to the east of the Mayne Annex, The Mayne Stage, JB Albertos and across the street from another Tawani project that is under development right now. Is Bruce claiming some authority over telling the owner of private property what they can or can't do with their own property? Contrary to the claim above, it's not "next to another vacant lot". The owner is using that lot as a parking area in support of a highly successful business on Morse Avenue. It's not "vacant" or unused. Is there a point to posting these photos of privately owned property?

Thanks, Robin; happy to hear about this new produce option in our area. Any advice about how apt/condo residents can arrange deliveries? Any local businesses that may be acting as a CSA delivery host for this, the way the natural food store near the RP Waldorf school did?

Hi Nancy - I've read about this company, but they are new to Chicago. I will get my first delivery in one week. They do have flexible hours; our delivery will be in the evening. I suggest dropping them an email for more information.

Maybe you and a neighbor or two can take turns accepting deliveries? Our delivery will be every other Monday

  • I just joined last week, too -- looking forward to my first delivery!

Found cat

I found a mid size, light orange cat in my garage today. The cat is friendly and I did feed it. Please help find its owner. Location is at Damen & Chase

  • Can you bring cat to local vet or shelter to see if it has microchip? Also, pls post on Lost Cats Illinois Facebook page, which gets a lot of traffic.

  • Yes.... pls run it by any vet & they will scan it for a chip. Just as above subscriber said. Facebook as well

Out-of-staters recognize our financial problems more clearly than we do

This excerpt is from an editorial in a newspaper in Nevada, the Review-Journal.

"Illinois is a financial basket case — which is what you get when you combine political patronage with powerful public-sector unions that control leftist politicians. The state should be a case study for other jurisdictions on how not to conduct public policy. After all, who will pay the bills when the taxpayers flee?"

Surely, after decades of one-party rule in Springfield, Cook County and Chicago, we voters can do better this March in the primaries and in September in the general election.

  • The joy of living in a state controlled by Democrats for decades. The unfunded debt is worse in high tax Democrat controlled states...and tends to be be better in low tax Republican states.

Shooting went on for a few hours this morning

Did anyone else hear it Sunday morning. Sounded like more than one gun. Rapid shooting followed by a short pause to reload and more rapid shooting.

Gunfire erupts at birthday party inside West Rogers Park bar, injuring 4
It was Tiana Harston's first time at American Ale House, an over-30 bar with Christmas lights hanging in the window and a green awning, on the Far North Side. She was there early Sunday to celebrate a friend's birthday. But uninvited guests slipped in, cutting the celebration short, she said.

2018 to be another rough year for Chicago taxpayers
2017 was particularly hard on Chicago taxpayers, who were hit with a major state income tax hike, the latest in a series of property tax increases at City Hall and Chicago Public Schools, and a new city tax on water and sewer service.

My 49th Ward Service Office will be CLOSED for the holidays from Friday, December 22nd, at 2:00 p.m. to Tuesday, January 2nd, at 9:00 a.m.

This will provide my staff members, who routinely work far more than 40 hours a week, an opportunity to spend time with their families during the holiday week when calls and emails to my office are almost non-existent.

Though the Ward Service Office will be closed, the City of Chicago will continue to provide 49th Ward residents with garbage and recycling pick-up and other routine city services, with the exceptions of Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Because Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Monday this year, if you receive City garbage and recycling pick-up on Monday, your garbage and recycling will be collected on Tuesday. If you receive City garbage and recycling pick-up on Tuesday, you may not get your garbage and recyclables picked up until Wednesday. Please have your carts accessible starting Tuesday.

Snow removal and other emergency services always will be provided regardless of the holidays.

For non-emergency city service requests during the holiday week, email or call my office and leave a message (email:ward49@cityofchicago.org; phone: 773-338-5796). We will return your email or telephone message promptly on Tuesday, January 2nd, and address your issue then.

If you have a city service request that requires immediate attention, please call 311. Of course, if you have a police, fire, or medical emergency, you should always call 911.

I hope that the year ahead is filled with hope, health and happiness for you and your family.

On behalf of myself, my family and my tireless and dedicated staff–Kevin O’Neil, Michael Land, Wayne Frazier, Ann Hinterman, Cecilia Salinas and Bob Fuller–I wish you a blessed holiday season and a wonderful and prosperous New Year!

Residents at Caroline Hedger Senior Apartments lose heat during Chicago’s frigid temps

"This is the second year in a row some residents there have complained of heating problems.

“I've been sleeping in three sweaters, two pajama pants because it's cold and I've been very sick and it seems to be getting worse,” Stephanie Hayes, a resident in the building, said."

Residents at North Side senior center lose heat during Chicago's frigid temps
CHICAGO -- Wednesday's dangerously cold temperatures had some residents at a senior center on the North Side complaining after they said their heat wasn't working. The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) denied there were any issues at the Caroline Hedger building on the 6400 block of North Sheridan Avenue in Rogers Park, but some senior residents said their heat has not been working properly.

What a wonderful parent! My parents keep reminding me how they are getting old and would like me to move in with them to take care of them. I remind them they better depend on my sister who they took the best care of in life. You choose to have a child your allegiance is to them. If you do a good job or are lucky they will do back.for you. Dont count on it simply because you wanted to bring a life into the world. Noone owes anyone anything simply because they were born into your family.
