Pick up after your dogs!

I live in a building on the 4400 block of Wolcott that doesn’t allow dogs. But someone has been letting their dog poop in front of our building all winter and not picking it up.

Remember the guy who walks his dog off leash and physically threatens anyone who calls him on it? It’s him. And now he has another dog. And he still walks the first one off leash. He lives two buildings south.

I don’t think I have much recourse in this, but it’s really starting to tick me off. If anyone knows that guy (vet, young, bushy beard, reddish hair) tell him we’re watching and recording.

  • Spam Alert Don't be selling your used junk up in here, okay?

Take photos. Start a Wall of Shame somewhere, online maybe.

One of the Mexican grocery stores in Albany Park used to snap a Polaroid of a culprit when they caught them shoplifting, then pin it up on the wall for all to see. Harsh. But interesting.

  • Phill Lucille, give me strength.

Jeska60640 if it bothers you so much, wait for the guy, catch him in the act and confront him.

Gather Owners' The Warbler Takes Flight Today in Lincoln Square
Lincoln Square may not be ready for spring, but The Warbler - the new restaurant from the ownership behind Gather - is ready to chirp. Gather's been roaring strong for the last five years, as owners David Breo and chef Ken Carter love the neighborhood and decided to take over the space next door.

We'll probably end up with around 30-40 people; just too big for our house in winter. It would be great to do it somewhere that had food, but I'd like to keep the cost around $15 or less per head, all in. If it's just a rental space, I don't mind cooking for a crowd. I'm waiting to hear back from The Grafton (that fireplace is money...). I called the Dank Haus, but their rooms were quite a bit higher than I'd like to pay for such an event. Any neat ideas in the neighborhood? Thanks in advance!

North Center: Robbers Crack Man Over The Head, Steal Phone Monday Evening
A man was hit over the head during a robbery in North Center yesterday evening. At around the same time, a woman fought off two would-be robbers in the Roscoe Village area. Here is what we've learned: Around 7:15 p.m., three teens attacked a man and robbed him of his phone in the 4300 block of North Oakley.

Granite needs to be "sealed" on a regular basis. As well Quartz is nearly indestructible! Whereas Granite can chip or crack. But cost is now very different in that Granite is now less expensive, Quartz can be pricey! Ultimately, I think it comes down to taste also, as many may say that Granite is still more beautiful as it is truly real stone from the earth, whereas Quartz is manufactured. I've seen gorgeous Quartz but some, to me, looks manufactured! And sealing is really no big deal, you just have to make time! Sealing is a clear liquid you wipe on, dries pretty quick and you're done. If you go to a place like A-American you can quickly see the difference ;) Hope I helped!

Black & White Cat in our yard

This black & white cat came around today, hanging around our feral cats and caterwauling. It's fairly large and appears well fed, and it really wasn't interested in our cats' food. No ear tipping, so definitely not a registered feral cat, but still skittish of humans. Other than the fact that it's significantly larger than our male-neutered feral cats, I'm inclined to suspect it's a female in heat due to the excessive caterwauling and following our male-neutered feral cats around,...

  • Catbus, we are a vegetarian family and we LOVE going to Gather! We have had brunch, the Sunday Suppers and "normal" dinner. They have always easily and happily adjusted as needed to create a great vegetarian meal.

One example - I love the breakfast skillet (brunch) and they substitute roasted veggies instead of the pork belly.

If you haven't been, you should try it. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Catbus, there were some pictures of the Warbler in an article on eater.com recently (the place looks amazing) and from what I could tell there was a Mediterranean focus and plenty of vegetarian dishes. Some good-looking cocktails as well. I'm not sure your allergies but hopefully there will be some items they can make work for you.

Fence Builders

Hi Friends! Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a fence builder? We are looking to build a horizontal fence in backyard as well as our front yard. Any recommendations are appreciated!

  • Our friend was an award winning builder. Several years ago he had 2 clients back out of projects because of bad Angies List reviews. When he looked into it he found several horrible reviews from people he had never heard of. He contacted Angies List and they said they had no way of verifying if reviews were real. He suspected the reviews were initiated by a competitor but could not prove it.

  • I've used Angies List for at least 10 years. I never base my decision on just one or two good or bad reviews. I read ALL the reviews. I look at any pictures posted. There are always some people who are never happy with anything and it is important story...

I look for someone who's been in business for a while thats licensed and insured if required. I also interview several potentials before I decide to hire. During the interview I ask questions and get a feel for how the company is to work with. Then I decide who to hire. I never take the first person I see on Angies List and I never take the cheapest or the most expensive. I also post reviews and have no problem if a potential customer wants to call me regarding a job someone did on my place.

Water line install pipe replacement Referrals needed

Hello, i'm getting a waterline install quote for a 3 flat in the Northside of Chicago. Looking for economical referrals if anyone has any. I've already gotten pricey quotes from Apex, and Parks Plumbing but am wondering if a smaller company can do better. Thanks everyone.

  • May I ask why the street to house line needs to be replaced? Is it leaking before reaching the house or having low pressure issue? When I replaced the lines in my building we did it from the point where it entering the house to all the fixtures and the boiler room.

When you say waterline, are you referring to the water service? This is the line that brings water from the municipal main to your building. If that’s the case, then your choices among plumbing contractors is going to be more limited than for work that does not involve going into the public way, which is required to replace a water service. Depending on the current size and fixture count, you may we’ll need to go into the street, requiring a street opening permit among other things. I’m not certain of the age of your 3 flat, but many older buildings in Chicago have a 1 inch lead (or iron) water service which no longer meets current code. You will need to bring things up to current code once you expose it. We do not do water services yet-it is one of the very few services we do not offer (but are looking to in the not too distant future) but would be happy to refer you to someone. If you are looking for inside plumbing, I’d be happy to give you any advice or take a look at things if you’d like.

Since at least mid-December the SE corner of Paulina at Ainslie has been taped off as a Tow Zone, supposedly by the Dept of Streets and Sanitation. However, no work nor workers have been spotted a single time. But I do have reason to believe that this is being abused...

The sign posted currently reads, “No Parking-Tow Zone 7a - 11pm through 1/30/18” yet more often than not a lone Dept of Streets & Sani truck is parked inside the Tow Zone at all hours. There has also been a dark red minivan spotted parked there, also in the Tow Zone, also during the listed times. I’ve done a little Google sleuthing and have reason to believe that this is occurring directly in front of a house in which an employee of the Dept of Streets & Sani lives.

In my 15 years in this city I’ve never once seen street work being done in a residential neighborhood at 11pm...

This may all be coincidence, but with how difficult it is to park on this street and the city that we live in, I thought I’d stir the pot and see what was cooking.

Smells awfully fishy to me.

  • So I contacted the alderman's office and here was the responce:

Thanks for your email. There is an active permit in the city's system for the Dept. of Water Management to repair a defective buffalo box in the parkway there at 4895 N. Paulina. They had an initial dig date on the permit of 12/1 and then it was moved to 12/26. I know that DWM has been grappling with the number of leaks and frozen water services that popped up during the cold snap, and I suspect that this delayed them coming to perform this repair which isn't as critical as someone without water.

Your neighbor's name is Erick Norton and he is the 47th Ward Superintendent. He coordinates garbage pickup, snow removal, and sanitation code enforcement here in the ward. He is one of 50 such superintendent's in the City of Chicago. I asked him about this and he reported that he was having low water pressure in his home and put a request in to have the city inspect. When they did, DWM found the defective buffalo box and put the item in the queue for repairs.

I will reach out to DWM today to see if I can get a more concrete timetable. I will also see about having the signs taken down unless they plan to be there shortly.

    --------

PrinceRobot again. This still doesn't really seem right to me. I've followed up in terms of the time table and sent a few snaps just to prove my point. To be fair, since I started this thread dude has not been parking there. So maybe he's already paying attention?

***FOUND*** Small tan male dog- possibly a chihuahua mix- found 1/15 early morning around 12am in Lincoln Square on the corner of Lincoln and Montrose in Chicago. Was wandering and looked cold with no owner in sight. Such a sweet boy- ran straight to me when approached. Was shaking and cold, so my husband and I warmed him up and took him to Medvet on Belmont/Clybourn. We live in Aurora so did not want to take him too far away from where we found him. No collar or microchip. He looks well fed and is so friendly, obedient, and sweet- he must have an owner/family out there who is missing him! Medvet will keep him 2-3 days and then he could be sent to Chicago Animal Control. Hello Neighbors - I've owned my home for 22 years on Paulina between Montrose and Wilson. It seems, particularly over the past few years, the use of salt on the public sidewalks - not just by multi-unit buildings and businesses - but also by homeowners has increased dramatically. As the owner of a dog that I walk twice a day for 40 minutes each time, I'm finding it impossible to get through a walk without my dog coming up lame from salt burns on his paw pads at least 6 times each walk - sometimes even more. Don't get me wrong, salt can be useful on those rare occasions when we have a glaze ice situation or when melting snow suddenly re-freezes. But to simply throw down piles of salt to avoid shoveling or - for whatever reason - throwing it down after shoveling, just doesn't make sense or is just a sign of laziness. As an example, after the last snow event, not a single grain of salt was used by the homeowners on the north half of the block, and yet the sidewalks have been and continue to be perfectly clear following conscientious shoveling or snowblowing by my neighbors. In fact, our sidewalks are actually clearer than many of the sidewalks where we have to dodge the piles of salt that remain day after day after application. In fact, with plunging temps so often coming immediately after snow events, as most people know, salt dramatically loses its effectiveness - yet it lingers on sidewalks for weeks.

Some might say "can't the dogs just wear those booties"? No. While some dogs will tolerate them the majority of dogs refuse to wear them and just push them off their paws.

I ask that homeowners - as well as tenants/condo owners, please ask your snow removal service or superintendent - to seriously limit the use of salt to those situations where it is genuinely needed and is actually effective. And please, do not throw it down just to avoid actually removing snow.

Thank for listening.

I've lived here for15 years and I always shovel in a timely manner after even the smallest amount of snow. Other posters are correct: There isn't anything I can do about snow that drifts and melts overnight and creates an ice skating rink on the front concrete. I do have a dog and do spent the extra on the expensive pet safe salt because leaving the ice on my front parkway so my elderly neighbors, my mail person, and any other passersby fall and break something isn't an option. Do you know what is an option? Twice daily trips to the Foster Beach Dog Park.

I agree that calling 311 to report those who don't shovel is import. What you're asking is just entitled whining.

My brother went to Gordon Tech in the 1990s and loved the auto and wood shops among other things. It is now called DePaul College Prep. My son is in the 6th grade and we are starting to look at high schools. A couple of items on their website alarmed me. One is that it seems that with the change to DePaul CP, they also did away with all shop classes. While my son wants to go to college, I felt it important that he learn to work with his hands as well. It seems so many people go to college only to come out and struggle to find work. Yet I have a friend who is an electrician and he makes fantastic money, and has always been busy.

The other concern was, is DePaul CP a racist school? I see they have a Black Student Union, but none for whites! I do not want to send my son to a racist school since we are a family that is proud of what God made us (I am white, my wife is Hispanic) so we would not mind him joining a group of others that would share like minded ideas about their culture, as I am sure the Black Student Union does, but to have one and not the other worries me in that, this may be a school that teaches that some races deserve special treatment based solely on the color of their skin. Does anyone have experience with DePaul CP? Many thanks for advise. We have a couple of years, but time passes quickly!

  • I'm so sorry all your cop relatives, friends and friends of friends are snitches. We must run in totally different circles because I know plenty who never give out info on anything at all. But after all you've revealed about your prostitute sister and the people you graciously let stay in your place I can see why you don't like police.

Never ending car alarm

Hi folks,

I wanted to know if anyone has experienced a never ending car alarm somewhere on Lawrence between Oakley and Leavitt. Today, I was woken up at 7am by this alarm, it is now 9:30am and it’s still going on. Tuesday afternoon and night it seems the same car had the same issue. The alarm went on till 8pm from the mid afternoon. I called 311 which connected me to the police they said they would bring a car out this was a little before 8am but obviously nothing has happened. Does anyone have any suggestions what to do about this?

  • I called 311 once for a car going off all night. They said the only thing they could do was put a noise violation ticket on it. Which wouldn't help get it turned off obviously. Another time was a neighbor's car that beeped outside my window everytime a car drove...

I called 311 once for a car going off all night. They said the only thing they could do was put a noise violation ticket on it. Which wouldn't help get it turned off obviously. Another time was a neighbor's car that beeped outside my window everytime a car drove down the street. It was going off several times a minute round the clock. I was starting to go crazy after a week of this. I finally put a note on the car explaining the frequency. After the note disappeared so did the sound. I think non nasty notes are the most effective. Unfortunately I don't think you can do anything in the moment because I don't think cops will tow the car. Unless you know how to get into the car and turn it off like that other guy!

Google the battery location of the make and model of the offending car, and use a hammer to put a chisel or long screwdriver through it.

Bedbug Help

Can anyone recommend a company that does heat treatment for bedbugs? I used Smithereens and they did not do an good job and I still have a problem.

  • We used Aegis Pest Management for a difficult problem in our building. They first brought in their bed bug detection dog and then treated affected units. They explained what they were doing, were very detailed/thorough, and got rid of a bed bug problem that had spread throughout 75% of our building.
Their contact information is info@aegispest.com or 773-433-3800

  • karen g.p. Registered Nurse at Ill. Masonic

Thanks for all the tips. Smithereen does offer that but denied that I had bedbugs even tho I had bites a week after they did there treatment.

Neighborly Litigation (Chadha v. NPES)

Many on this forum talk about litigating, be it for some unneighborly thing or other. Well, here is your chance to read the behind the scenes workings of the Chicago Way in its entirety (link below - get some popcorn and settle in) and VOTE.

This is the culmination of 7 years of attorney fees and a waste of our taxpayer-funded court's time/resources, in my opinion, of course.

Breakroom / Finches / Ravinia Brewing

Does anyone know when Ravinia Brewing will open? That carcass of a store front is just sitting there.

  • I sent Ravinia a message and this is the response I got:
I wish I had a better answer for you, but unfortunately there are a variety of issues to work through at the Montrose spot that continue to put timing and planning up in the air. It is a wonderful spot and a wonderful neighborhood which we are really hoping to make work - but some thing are simply out of our control. Keep checking back with us and hopefully we'll know more soon!

  • Eric Pepeson NW-side deplorable, based-stickman, commie-crusher

That's too bad, ya' know I always wanted to open up a nice restaurant & bar. That building would a make a good dirty neighborhood strip club with a nasty lunch buffet. Maybe put some of those slot machines in the back and patrons can also bet on the ponies with an OTB. Forget about all those fancy microbrews, only Schlitz or Old Style for a buck and a quarter each. It will be the classiest establishment on the NW side. Call it "Deplorables"

We are seeking a simple but elegant and low cost venue for our wedding ceremony/ reception around Chicago for May of next year. There will be about 60 - 75 guests. We are open to any ideas including unique and edgy locations. All of our family members are travelling from out of town and we want to give them a fun and nice time without breaking the bank.

  • McBean animals, art, outdoors

To anyone subscribed to this, I wanted to post an update. After changing ideas on the venue and guests and date, we finally decided to have our wedding at Goose Island brewery on Clybourn next July with about 80 guests. We reserved two event rooms and will have a buffet...

To anyone subscribed to this, I wanted to post an update. After changing ideas on the venue and guests and date, we finally decided to have our wedding at Goose Island brewery on Clybourn next July with about 80 guests. We reserved two event rooms and will have a buffet and bar in one, and the marriage ceremony and dancing in the other. The food and beverage choices are very good and affordable. The sound system is great and we will do our own music using spotify. Lisa the event coordinator is super nice. We are happy with our choice and can't wait!

  • McBean, hope your marriage is going strong! How did your reception turn out, were you happy with the results and the final cost? And would you mind letting us know how much per head it came out to (or a $ range)?

Old issues of National Geographics

Howdy neighbors- I have about 5 years worth of magazines that I want to get rid of. Wondering if this is something a school wants or any crafty folks. 2006-2010 are the approximate years. They also have the fake leather book box that they are stored in.
Anyone... Anyone... Bueller? If not then I will just take them to the Village Disco...

  • Hi there! I would be happy to take some of the National Geographics off your hands. I send care packages to troops and those magazines are requested and very well received. Let me know if I could grab some. Thanks!

  • ElizabethB..how cool!!! (You , too!) Thanks for this!!!

Cleaning lady/service?

We are looking for a cleaning lady for our home. It's officially 4 beds and 2.5 baths, but we are a couple with no children, so it's much less work than it might seem based on straight up numbers. We had a lady who cleaned it for $75, but she kept breaking things... Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably-priced cleaning person?

Maybe this couple works a lot of hours and simply cannot find the time. Before I was married, I lived with my girlfriend. I worked very long days, as did she, in addition to going to school. Sorry after a 12 hour day, the last thing either of us felt like was cleaning house. We had a cleaning lady once a week and our place was always guest ready. You assume because they don't have kids, Mark, that they don't use the other rooms. Maybe they have an office, gym, hobby room etc.

  • Who wouldn't enjoy having a cleaning person if they could afford it?

  • Mary, let me know if you find anyone as we too are looking for about the same needs.

Need a student or retiree Sundays Noon-4pm for dusting of merchandise and shelves plus sweeping.

Pay is $50. Job involves dusting of all shelves, merchandise and products used in treatments, dusting of celling fans, and thorough sweeping. Since this is all that is needed, no need for professional cleaning, so this is perfect for a student or retiree looking for a little extra cash. Location is a semi-basement, which means cobwebs and daddy long legs do show up, so the person has to be ok with removal of small cobwebs and the appearance of the occasional spider. Really pleasant environment, location is off of Montrose near Damen. If interested, please email danielasfacialstudio@gmail.com.
