If you or someone you know is looking for a *permanent* part time position (it's not the kind of position that can handle a revolving door), I'd love to talk. Here are the particulars.

Hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 10am to 4pm, Fridays 9:30 to 3:30. These hours are not flexible. The pay is $15 an hour, but enabling my business to grow and thrive will enable an increase in pay and room for growth in the job.

I'm looking for someone energetic who knows Mac really well, especially Word for Mac, has a steady hand, patience for occasionally tedious work while able to pay steady attention to it, and also up for the challenge of detailed work with a lot of responsibility. A background and interest in marketing is helpful but a marketing degree is not necessary. I need someone experienced with social media, including blogging and Pinterest. The person must be reliable (I can't afford to have someone who regularly has to call unable to come in), responsible, competent, attentive, efficient and detail oriented. Email only please, skin911@daniela.com.

Optometrist Referral

Hi, I am looking for an economical (exam/contacts/glasses) optometrist referral in the Lakeview/Roscoe Village/North Center/Southport Corridor areas or even downtown Loop. Thank you for your suggestions.

  • If you have a Costco membership, they have an optometrist on staff.

  • My husband and I see Dr. Weiler at Lakeview Eye Care and and really like him and his staff.

  • The team at North Center Eye Care on Irving Park are great. 200$ cheaper on my daily contact orders than anyone else who takes my insurance!

NPES "Kinder-gardeners" Grow Vegetables, Donate to Common Pantry

If you've been admiring the bright planter boxes on the North Park Elementary School play lot, you can thank the school’s kindergarteners. The NPES kindergarten class — led by teacher Zoe Ardito — have maintained every aspect of the planters, from deciding what to grow to sowing the seeds to plucking the weeds to harvesting the plants. It's part of their classroom's year-long service learning project, where students take the lead (with help from their teachers) in responding to the needs of the school and community.

They started with a Fall visit to Montrose Metra Community Gardens. The hands-on experience saw the students harvesting tomatoes, peas, peppers and eggplants, which were bagged up and donated to Common Pantry, a local food pantry. “Not only did they get to feel like they were a part of this gardening project, but to give back to the community was really awesome for them,” Ardito says.

During the winter months, the class read books on gardening, talked about what happens around the globe in the winter and learned about eating seasonally. In late February, the class started to plan their gardens and in May they planted low-maintenance vegetables like zucchini, tomatoes and peppers which they'll water, weed and harvest before the end of the school year. Then they'll do another round of planting, so they can see the results when they come back in the fall. “I think it promotes global awareness, being part of a bigger picture, to plant and see things come to life,” Ardito says.

According to Ardito, kindergarten is the perfect time for kids to start learning about gardening. “What's beautiful about this age is their excitement and understanding,” she says. “They're starting to comprehend things, to develop a self-awareness and empathy, and to have an awareness of the world around them.” And then there's the dirt. “Playing in the dirt is one of their favorite things to do!"

Susy D -- not sure where you are, but several North Side CPS schools already do some variation on what NPES does. As mentioned above, Waters has a strong ecological focus and not only has gardening but also a strong no-waste program with recycling (and I believe composting). Coonley has its "kinder garden" outside the school, which (as you might expect) the kindergarteners tend to. Bell has a civics unit in which the teacher takes kids to the grocery store and then has the kids deliver food to a food pantry. Sometimes these activities are integrated into a science curriculum. So because the teachers have mandated amounts of time they have to spend on specific subjects (not just math and writing and science and social studies, but also PE and computers), they manage to fit this in without taking away from other instruction. Surely you can't be against that. And in certain parts of the city, where there are food deserts, school/community gardens offer a way for children (and adults) to have access to fresh produce.

As for CPS being a priority for the city, anyone who follows the news might think otherwise. Just in the past 6 months there have been revelations about special-ed services denied to students to save money, rats and other filthy conditions due to the privatized cleaning contract, and sex abuse that was covered up by CPS for years. So unfortunately no, the city (mayor) has not prioritized public education. Instead he/they have diverted resources to charter schools while starving neighborhood schools, in addition to hiring grifters and putting money toward building new schools instead of fixing/supporting the existing ones. In fact, it would be great if more Chicago citizens would pressure the mayor/city to make better decisions with their tax money.

  • I am well aware of what you say - - - but it makes one wonder where all the $$$$$ that comes out of our Real Estate Taxes - goes - - I would like to re-state what someone once said to me when I went to a meeting at Police headquarters - "Susy D, you live in Mayberry" - - -

Assaults in Lakeview at 8:30 pm on a busy Saturday evening, getting robbed in Lakeview at gunpoint between 2 days cares at 2:30 pm in the afternoon. Its by far way worse than normal city life. Welles Park Dog Park?

Thinking Welles Park needs a dog park or signs can't let your dog off leash and someone to ticket. Every morning on baseball diamonds and today we have a party of 5 dogs off leash with owners chatting. Was hoping to cut through park but will go around.

  • I couldn't agree more Cubs. My dog is always on a leash and I deal with this at Winnemac park regularly. Dogs off leash approach my dog as I'm walking him and if they run up to us, he feels threatened. (His eyesight is not great anymore). I would much prefer there were a fence around the unofficial dog park that's formed there so we all can enjoy the park.

  • The police don't always coordinate with the Park District management. This problem has to be addressed with the park supervisor. If you don't know who that is, go to the Chicago Park District website and look it up or click on CONTACT US on the home page and leave your complaint there.
