North Park Elementary School Celebrates as Chicago High School Acceptance Letters Roll In

North Park Elementary School (NPES), a small, independent school in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood, is pleased to congratulate its 2018 graduating class of eighth graders on their acceptance to the high schools of their choice. Of the school’s 17 eight graders, 13 were accepted to one of Chicago Public School’s selective enrollment high schools, highly-competitive schools that accept only 1 in 5 applicants. Additionally, two NPES eighth graders were accepted to prestigious magnet programs, Double Honors and Instrumental Music, at Lincoln Park High School. And two NPES eighth graders were accepted to Beacon Academy, an independent school in Evanston that matches a challenging IB curriculum with methods of Montessori.

NPES has gained a reputation over the years for its challenging curriculum and supportive, close-knit school community, both of which school administrators and parents credit for NPES’ long-running track record of placing 100% of its students into the high schools of their choice.

“We are so proud of the ways that we prepare our kids for their lives after NPES. The richness and rigor of our instructional curriculum sets a critical foundation, leading our kids to impressive results with the Chicago testing,” said Dr. Randy Needlman, Head of School at North Park Elementary. “Simultaneously, NPES provides a safe, caring environment in which students can learn to communicate effectively, understand their place as members of a global community, and ultimately become leaders in their high schools and beyond. “

NPES has approximately 240 students, preschool through eighth grade, and a dedicated faculty who develop strong relationships with their students throughout their tenures at the school.

"The entire school community is celebrating our 8th graders as if they were their own children – that’s the kind of closeness we have at NPES,” Needlman added.

  • Neighborhood Dad 27-year resident of North Center/St Bens/Lincol...

I believe NPES is now closer to $13K. In any event, the numbers likely are skewed. The CPS figures is an average - includes special needs, options, maybe factors in transportation costs for both? Plus a unionized workforce.

Fewer dollars does not necessarily equate to lesser-resourced. Smaller classroom sizes and other factors also come into play.

Tree trimming on public land...

We have a tree out front that is growing into our home's front. We would like to prune/trim it but are unsure if we are allowed.

Does anybody know if trimming or pruning a tree on the public side of the sidewalk is "legal"?

  • One cannot even hire a professional Arborist to prune a city public tree. And worst thing someone can do presently, is request city forestry to prune. Now that untrained "Day Workers" are replacing certified arborist once employed by city. Look up words "Lion tail" pruning, and you will understand how bad Chicago's tree collection is being managed presently. Hopefully things will change, so stay tuned.

  • Scott Concertman - Is THAT the reason the city trees look so bad? I've seen that whole 'lion tale' effect for several years now - didn't know it had an official name, I just called it a high and tight - all the lower branches stripped off and just a...

Scott Concertman - Is THAT the reason the city trees look so bad? I've seen that whole 'lion tale' effect for several years now - didn't know it had an official name, I just called it a high and tight - all the lower branches stripped off and just a few sprouts left at the very top. Trees aren't hair - if you take away all the greenery, not only does it weaken the tree's architecture, it starves them. I wondered at the logic of it, now I know...there isn't any. I guess we just have to resolve watching the trees we have left die off slowly because of poor husbandry. Which way to the tree museum?

(BTW, don't mound up soil/mulch around the base of your trees - that's another way to strangle them to a slow death!)

Litter

Is anyone else as annoyed by the amount of litter they see outside? When I walk around our neighborhood, I see countless bottles, cans, cups, wrappers, straws, etc on the sidewalk and the street. This is also true for our parks and schools. I've even found several beer bottles at Coonley over the past few weeks. I try to do my part and pick up 3-4 pieces of trash anytime I am out for a walk with my kids or to/from the L. I just can't understand how rude you have to be to throw garbage on the ground.

  • Neighborhood Dad 27-year resident of North Center/St Bens/Lincol...

K - London did that in the 80's to combat the IRA. I doubt Chicago does it for bombs. Although I'm sure they use it as a reason. It's simply cost cutting. Fewer cans, theroretically fewer staff to empty and maintain them. Seems shortsighted but it won't change.

  • on the south side the trash can is just open you car window and throw it out.

They scare the bejeezus out of us when they're missing, but it's too hard to scold them when they're found, because you're just so darned relieved to have them back.
    Glad he's home.

Metal & Iron Stairs Repair - any recommendations?

Hello, I've been having difficulty finding any contractors in Chicago who perform repair and maintenance on metal/iron stairs. We have a landing that's rusted through and need to replace it. Does anyone have any recommendations? Deck contractors I've spoken with only recommend to demolish the metal/iron stairs and build it all new wooden.

Furniture donation?

In an effort to make our spare bedroom less of a hoarder's cave, we are looking to get rid of some furniture we've outgrown (mostly baby's room furniture). We have a glider chair, changing table, and a few other pieces that are clean and in usable condition. Anybody know a good place to donate where these could go to new moms or families who would appreciate them?

  • Just a heads up, I contacted Humble Design Chicago and they are no longer accepting furniture donations.

  • Thanks for the update, Katie! I reached out to my contact at Humble Design Chicago who confirmed the warehouse is pretty full of big furniture items but they remain in need of the following household goods, if anyone is looking to unload:

-Kitchen- any small appliances (microwaves, toasters, crock pots), dishes, pots/pans, baking sheets, cutting boards, utensils, placemats, etc.
    -Bathroom- towels, trinkets, shower curtains
-Knick Knacks- vases, candles, baskets, book ends, etc.
    -Linen- sheets, comforters, bed skirts

  • Yes these pictures Barbara C sent to me directly. She did say that she wasn't sure if the vehicle was an actual business or if a license plate was stolen, but they are two pieces of supporting evidence and she confirmed that these two people are the same people that did the same thing to her.

  • Thinkin' Square Active Neighbor Certified

Has anyone contacted the #? I googled it and it appears more than a dozen or so folks report it as a spam phone number, so it’s likely a fake pamphlet to disguise their crime. That should actually add some additional charges (conspiracy to commit fraud) to their rap if they get busted.

But hey this is the 17th where the police are in fights with there leaders and are less then 1/2 staffed and everyone in 17th believe the cure is to go run to the alderman who ignores illegal activity EVEN when given actual proof, lies about it when caught and tries to back peddle among other complaints. Hello Neighbors. On Monday, April 2nd at the NorthCenter Chamber of Commerce - 4054 N. Lincoln, Alderman Pawar has arranged for a meeting with the owner of the property at 4101-4105 N. Lincoln (Currency exchange, convenience mart and vacant laundromat) to discuss the proposed redevelopment plans. My understanding is that the current owner's son would like to build out some of the property, re-do the façade and add more residential units above the commercial properties. I am not certain as to whether the currency exchange or mini-mart would remain as tenants. The proposed changes sound promising, but I have concerns about the scope of the project and whether it can be accomplished, as well as the finished product, based on what I've seen as a neighboring resident for the last 10 years. I think this is valuable opportunity to learn more about the project and raise any questions/issues with the developer and alderman, so please feel free to attend the meeting.

Lets not forget the public is crying for help from these said officers YET they are the same citizens who want to record and post half the story of something portraying the police as bad guys, then officers start getting fired or calls for termination and jail time, while the family is threatened by people who ride the bandwagon train, and you want them to do something PLEASE.... hate to say it but the public created this mess handcuffing the police. I don't blame them for not doing anything except staying alive, not getting in a gun battle and maintaining a check to take care of their families.

When i was younger when i heard the police were on their way we got the heck out of there cause we knew what the a pillar of the car felt like when you had your head bounced off it. Now a days they stick around and laugh at them knowing they cant be touched

Night life? Depends what you're used to & enjoy, I guess. I like Fuller's basically right on that corner as a solid dive bar with local bands on the weekends. Lizard's a couple blocks down Irving will also have bands sometimes, and Serbian Village has a jazz jam on Monday nights that I've been intending to check out. Then you've also got Christina's at Kedzie & Grace with $3 pints of Guinness and very-late-night karaoke on the weekends.
