Hi all, hope it's kosher to post here about searching for apartments. Read about it on some other forums and was suggested to ask for insight here.

I'm new to Chicago but have visited for work 20-30 times over the past 2 years. Mainly stayed in the Loop so I'm choosing Bucktown / Wicker Park based on word of mouth and advice from others. I'm 24, young professional, consultant, female.

Basically I'm looking for any tips / insight for the search - locations to avoid, best ways to search, etc. I've contacted a few locators in addition to searching on my own. My move-in date is any time after August 10. I'll be there August 10 - 13 with the intention of viewing an applying for places (and hopefully signing a lease).

Thanks in advance!

  • No worries Bger ... My comment was more so to show that there are other great areas adjacent to WP/Bucktown that are MUCH more affordable (I'm 7 blocks from Bucktown and own a house ... A WHOLE HOUSE ... that costs less than to rent a jr 1 br .5 miles away ;)

Logan Square is west of western and certainly is desirable in many ways. Worthy of checking out.

Recommendations for non-surgical skin doctor for face

Neighbors: Looking for recommendations for places and/or doctors to treat a few sunspots on my face. I would like non-surgical procedures and little to no down-time after the procedure. Having a hard time finding someone! Would prefer a personal recommendation vs reading reviews online. Thanks in advance for your help.

anywhere within city limits is good, will travel for a good doctor!

Speed Humps by the Map Room

I noticed speed humps being installed on Hoyne south of Armitage by the Map Room. Speed humps can cause reckless drivers to lose control of their vehicles and create more dangerous situations. Wouldn't it be better to drop the speed limit to 20mph, set up a speed camera, and ticket at 25mph? Speeding there would plummet immediately via economics.

  • Another solution, albeit perhaps wildly unpopular, would be to turn Hoyne into a one way street northbound. Locals would enter the neighborhood from Armitage by using the southbound one way Leavitt (which has a stop light.) Cars in transit south on Hoyne to avoid heavy traffic on Damen will be SOL.

  • they don't even fill potholes without a complaint from residents... you think CDOT added speed bumps to one random residential street one their own?

ISO one time deep-cleaning of very old, small 2 bdrm apt in east logan.

Hello friends! I have been renting this little old 2 bdrm apt at fullerton/rockwell alone for over 6 years and the upkeep has just plain gotten past me. Im simply too busy to deal with the bathroom tiles, baseboards, wall dust, nooks and crannies, etc. No clutter/garbage, just build-up in an old 2nd floor apt building. Looking for recommendations on a one time, affordable, thorough scrubbing during the day- preferably on a weekday afternoon. Note: it will likely take a couple of hours and I will not provide cleaning supplies- this person should bring the industrial stuff, i want the real deal!!! Thanks! :)

Anybody have an estate sale company to recommend?

I"m trying to help my in-laws and I've been researching estate sale companies. So much is all over the board including Yelp reviews and BBB rating (for what that may be worth) and I can't even confidently narrow it down to five. AND I'm really reluctant to recommend only one just in case they aren't happy ORRRRR if other family members aren't happy with the outcome.
I figured this was as good a place to ask as any. They've lived in Buffalo Grove for over 50 years. I've attended high end sales and picker's sales. They would be somewhere in the middle with some valuables.
Thanks for reading and for any insights offered.

  • llitman I'm a happy resident and have been here for years.

Sandy Lane is good, Manderley Estate Sales is good. Others to consider are Ampersand, ImagineThat, and TraderMerchants.

  • Thank you for the leads everyone. What a process this is!

    Good luck to you Anne.

The May Compilation

Here is another random selection of cars blowing a stop sign. This video illustrates what pedestrians must deal with daily at every intersection in Bucktown. Other neighborhoods are worse. The camera logged 657 no excuse violations which is about a 12% decrease from last month. The top end reckless category was down over 30%. Not sure why.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8fzbUBDfrs

These videos are auto generated and snippets randomly selected so not all cars can make the cut. I tried my best to manually eliminate duplicates but I'm not that good at Mahjong. Enjoy :)

Is that a three way stop intersection? We have one of those near us in LP and we see the same thing constantly. Usually the uber and lyft drivers (they are so focused on their GPS Since they have no idea where they are going - I miss the taxis where you have to have a number on your car and they knew every street with a phone) are the worst and we are on a street with a ton of kids. A rolling stop with a car vs a bicycle is completely different (but I agree there are plenty of cyclists going to fast blowing through cross walks/stop signs). With either type of transportation the pedestrian should have the right away but when I’m driving my car vs riding my bicycle you can hear and see pedestrians much better on a bike. All it takes is one accident hitting a kid with a car and it’s over for the kid and the car driver doesn’t have so much as a bruise. They had stop sign enforcement in Lakeview a while back but it’s not the neighborhood people doing it.

  • Kinetic Energy = 1/2*Mass*Velocity^2

Let's say the total mass of a bicyclist and bike is around 200-300lb. The mass of car is around 10x that or 2000-3000lb. Just with mass a car imparts an order of magnitude greater energy into its victim compared to a bike.

Many, if not most, vehicles in that video exceed 15mph through the stop sign. 15mph on a bike is very fast if you ever rode a bike. My camera picks up bikes but rarely do they ever make it into the measuring pool which is >7mph let alone any violation pools.

This means cars travel more than double or triple the speed of bikes into crosswalks. Since velocity is squared that increases KE by another 4x to 9x meaning the total energy imparted into a reckless driver's victim is 40-90 times more than a bike. Slower speeds also increase reaction time to any oopsies that may occur.

To compare reckless drivers with reckless bikers is a diversion tactic used to obfuscate the true threat pedestrians face every day from cars.

In need of a plumber referral

Hello, I just moved into the neighborhood and have a "sweating" wall. Looks like some condensation coming in from outside, however there are no pipes visible where this leak is. Landlady has no idea about a good plumber to call, so I'm trying to expedite myself. Any suggestions, good and bad are welcome. Thanks! Naranjito + K8
