Local doctor, nurse among medical mission group killed in Philippines van crash

Rubio was the medical director of endocrinology at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center at 2222 W. Division St., where he worked from 1972 until 2015.

Local doctor, nurse among medical mission group killed in Philippines van crash
The group of doctors and nurses traveled to the Philippines at their own expense to help the less fortunate in need of medical care. But before they could begin their work, as they enjoyed the sights on a tourist excursion, their trip took a tragic turn.

  • Outlaw leaving packages? We can't even enforce the illegality of bold face shooting someone dead in broad daylight. Good luck with that one. Merry Christmas to all and peace on earth (especially Chicago) and goodwill to all.

  • This is both sad and frustrating. Consider these solutions...I saw that Walgreens was accepting FedEx packages for customers. Amazon has locations where you can have them delivered. There may be other options like that available at no additional cost. I started having packages delivered to my office but I can see where that might not work well. Letting anything over the size of an envelope be delivered to your mailbox is really risky. Hope this helps.

Anyone else hear gunfire near Chicago and Richmond at about 3:40am on Sunday?

It sounded like 5 or 6 shots. Called 911 and did see a patrol vehicle, but the police must not have seen anything unusual.

I want my old ward back, before Gerrymandering!!!

I live in the 2nd Ward (Wicker Park). Before Gerrymandering, my ward area made sense, it was more or less a rectangle and I was near people in my ward. Now it looks like a monkey got ahold of an Etch A Sketch. I really liked my old Alderman, who was Scott Waguespack, now I have douche named Brian Hopkins as my Alderman, who doesn't represent my interests. I have nothing in common with people on the east side of my ward, in Streeterville, which has nothing to do with me or my neighbors in Wicker Park. I want my old ward back and redrawn the way it used to be!!! Here is a link to an article about it, and also a picture of the ridiculously redrawn gerrymandered 2nd Ward. http://1001chicago.com/607/

#607: Amoeba or Gerrymandered Chicago Ward? Take the Quiz
Is this a map of Wicker Park or an amoeba about to split in two? Or what about this? Is that little wiggly bit on the right a pseudopod engulfing an algae cell or is it Montrose Beach?

Regardless of your party affiliation, the ward map has to infuriate you. It is nothing more than a raised middle finger from incumbent politicians to the voter. The message is clear: they're in control, not you. Most Chicagoans could describe many neighborhood boundaries. None could describe a single ward's.

I completely agree that political gerrymandering should never be the reason for determining district boundaries, and as a former neighborhood association president in Streeterville, I actually opposed creation of the ward that I now have the privilege to represent in the City Council. I support redistricting reform, to prevent something like this from happening again. I am the only currently serving alderman to sign on as a supporter of the independent map amendment. And while I lived in in the eastern-most section of the 2nd Ward at the time of my election, I now live in the western-most section. Despite the challenges associated with the unusual geographic shape, I understand my ward and the diverse population within its various neighborhoods. My ward office staff does an excellent job serving ALL 2nd Ward residents, regardless of their address. http://www.mapamendment.org/SUPPORTERS.html

I am glad to her that you opposed it. I hope that you can implement redistricting reform. I am finding out more about you and I like some of the thing that you have done in the ward. Sorry, I called you a douche. I really didn't like losing my former alderman, because of redistricting. I really liked Scott Waguespack, and felt that he was always championing our causes, and helped me out with personal issues as well. I hope that I will also like the things that you do for us, in all of our neighborhoods within the ward, moving forward.
