Why does a sea mammal evoke more sympathy than a black man?, asks Tilikum

Through 7/29: Thu-Sat 8 PM, Sun 2:30 PM, Victory Gardens Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln, 773-871-3000, sideshowtheatre.org, $20-$30.

Why does a sea mammal evoke more sympathy than a black man?, asks Tilikum
The orca Tilikum was taken from the remote waters of Iceland at the age of two and penned in a cramped pool away from the ocean and even the sun most of his waking hours. Tilikum became a killer by the age of ten, drowning trainer Keltie Byrne in an incident spun as an accident.

Sideshow Theatre’s Tilikum: A Bleak Fantasy, Ripped From the Headlines

Tilikum by Sideshow Theatre Company runs 90 minutes with no intermission. See it at Victory Gardens’ Richard Christiansen Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave, through July 29. Tickets are $20-30 for performances Thursday-Sunday.

Sideshow Theatre's Tilikum: A Bleak Fantasy, Ripped From the Headlines - Third Coast Review
"Tilikum, the infamous SeaWorld killer whale, has died." That was the headline in the Orlando Sentinel on January 6, 2017. Sideshow Theatre's world premiere production of Tilikum takes the story of that sea creature and creates a poetic, percussive fantasy that demands that we pay attention to a range of social justice issues.

'Tilikum' tells dark story of a captive orca at SeaWorld

Where: Victory Gardens Richard Christiansen Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave.

'Tilikum' tells dark story of a captive orca at SeaWorld
In 2010, a captive whale named Tilikum killed his trainer, Dawn Brancheau, by grabbing the 40-year-old woman's ponytail and pulling her into the water. This was the third death of a human that involved this orca, first captured in Iceland and subsequently obliged to perform at marine parks in North America.

The children explored STEAM learning (science, technology, art, and math) as they participated in science experiments and created projects. Some of the projects included demonstrating how clouds produce rain, soaking pennies in different liquids to see which one cleans the coins the quickest and observing how apples aged and reacted to various solutions.

The Science Fair encourages children’s natural curiosity in STEAM learning by allowing them to explore topics that they are interested in.

“The Science Fair is an excellent way for children and parents alike to experience first-hand a bit of our play-based learning at The Goddard School,” said David Raye, owner of The Goddard School located in Third Lake, IL. “STEAM learning teaches children to collaborate, communicate, be creative and think critically, which are 21st century skills that are necessary skills no matter what career path the children choose later on in life.”
