5 must-see concerts in Chicago this week: Girlpool, Zola Jesus, Sylvan Esso
Sure, Pitchfork Music Festival might be taking over Chicago's alternative rock scene this week, but there are still great concerts happening outside of Union Park. If you're in an indie mood, check out musical duos Girlpool and Sylvan Esso. Still craving a festival-worthy lineup?

Does Michelle Smith ever respond to anything?

I’ve emailed her twice about issues in my ward and received zero response. Even after I’ve followed up. Does anybody else have this experience? I thought this was the whole point of an alderman.

  • Nick, that's the same email address I've always used. There is always an immediate response but never follow up. I have also called several times and been told I would be called back and that never happened. I get that there's lots of big stuff going on in our ward and Michele may be busy with those, but her staff needs to be able to handle these ordinary day-to-day issues and has not.

  • She almost lost the last election by not being true to her ward of property owners. Won by only 35 votes and they were in senior centers. So don’t forget to canvas the many senior housing facilities we have in the ward. Also you can talk to her in person, She’ll smile and nod her head and that’s the most action you’ll get from your conversation. She’s as phony as they come.

The Young Lords: How a street gang turned to community activism
At midnight on May 15, 1969, a group of about 20 people marched into the administration building of McCormick Theological Seminary, announced themselves as the Young Lords, and demanded $601,000 from the venerable Lincoln Park institution. Most of the intruders were Puerto Rican and sported the berets that then marked radical activists.

10 cereal dishes that take childhood favorites out of the breakfast bowl
There aren't many meals more nostalgic than a bowl of cereal. Whether you prefer the first still crunchy bite or slurping down the leftover sugary milk, a meal of Fruity Pebbles, Cap'n Crunch or (in the healthier families) Cheerios brings back memories of Saturday morning cartoons and lazy Sundays without a care in the world.

Why does a sea mammal evoke more sympathy than a black man?, asks Tilikum
The orca Tilikum was taken from the remote waters of Iceland at the age of two and penned in a cramped pool away from the ocean and even the sun most of his waking hours. Tilikum became a killer by the age of ten, drowning trainer Keltie Byrne in an incident spun as an accident.
