Someone painted my garage doors!!!!

I don't know who you are!! or if you are even on Everyblock - but it is beautifully done and very much appreciated and very much needed!
I was just walking the new dogs in the alley and almost walked by with a 'where am I'? moment.
Best thing that has happened to me in...so long!!!
THANKS!!! (I'll 'pay it forward....)

Is one of your neighbors is trying to sell their house?

  • No..and no one drives thru the alley unless they have to do so...only one way in and out.....and they left my next door neighbors garage door the same (and that was might dismal as well...)

What would you do?

I am on my bicycle crossing California by the Popeye's heading east, there is a car coming Westbound on Diversey, making a right hand turn to get onto the Kennedy, the woman driving the car, doesn't want to stop for me, despite me having the crosswalk signal to go, she honks, flips me off, does stop only cause I was in the crosswalk.
I have her car pictured and plate number.

HVAC contractor

Hello all,

Am looking for a reliable contractor to work on the a/c units in a two-flat. We have two a/c units and two high-efficiency furnaces; one contractor is telling us everything needs to be replaced but we are seeking other bids. If you've had a good experience with an HVAC contractor, any suggestions are welcome.

Any recommendations for tree service?

The city recently cut down the ash tree in front of our house because of ash borer infestation. The tree still looked healthy but I’m no arborist.

Can anyone recommend a tree service to treat our two remaining ash trees?

I spoke with the Bureau of Forestry and was assured that they would not remove these trees if they were recently treated.

  • If the trees are on the parkway - the city does treat them - but it seems it does not help - the city tries to keep them up as long as they are not dangerous....sooner or later they take them down - and replace them later in the year......

Cats Outside?

What is the policy on housecats being allowed loose outdoors? I frequently see one leaving an apartment near my house and it has been “aggressive-defensive” to my dog. Tonight was the most concerning because it sliced at my dogs face unexpectedly from underneath a car.

I dont know exactly know which apartment it comes from and dont plan to go knocking on doors asking who's cat it is. Im just curious if there is a cat “leash law” and who enforces it.

  • My understanding is cats aren't considered "domestic animals" Therefore they don't fall under a leash law or require licenses ( sadly)

  • Actually there is a law against letting your cat wander off of your property - YES - it is true....but there are very few officers that will ticket you - but it has been done....

At one time there was a police officer that would actually follow cats to find out who they belonged to - and ticket the owner.... The owner that had been ticketed TWICE actually moved out of the city so her cat could explore the outdoors in their new location. I personally - do not approve of letting our cats go outside in this city....too dangerous for them. Being in RESCUE most of my life - I have seem horrible things happen to outdoor cats....we need to take good care of our pets..... IT IS ILLEGAL to let them wander in Chicago.....

Best place to sell appliances,etc?

We've recently (almost!) completed a reno and have a few things to sell that are in good shape/not used (coin op W/D, pedestal sink, light fixture, etc) that seem like things a landlord or builder would be interested in. Is Craigslist still the best place for this type of thing? I have tried the 'marketplace' on Facebook somewhat recently too and didn't have any luck. Are there better apps or sites? I've heard a lot of them people just try to get you down to giving it to them for free on the apps... Thanks!

Is it legal for a scooter with an out of state plate to park on a permit only street?

I have a friend visiting who will be bringing a scooter here. i know you can park scooters on permit only streets without a zone sticker with an IL plate, but does the same apply to out of state plates?

Thanks!

  • You can only park a scoot in permit parking if you have a city of Chicago patking tag. It's a little circle that you put on license plate. City clerk sells them $40 I think

  • The "little circle" is the equivalent of the city sticker on the windshield of a car. It has nothing to do with parking. Motorcycles are exempt from zoned parking restrictions.

Too bad...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/soccer/ct-world-cup-2026-20180613-story.html

Too bad the city will overspend on tax incentives to attract companies but won't pay to bring some worldwide focus...

U.S., Mexico and Canada win joint bid for 2026 World Cup; Chicago won't be a host site
The World Cup is returning to the United States, and this time, Mexico and Canada are along for the wild ride. Chicago, however, will not be among the host cities. A North American joint bid won the rights Wednesday to host the 2026 edition of the celebrated soccer tournament, defeating Morocco and bouncing back from an unfathomable U.S.
    http://www.chicagotribune.com
  • That is true in hosting an entire event...hosting a game or two wouldn't have nearly the same scale of issues.

  • That is also more true when you have to create infrastructure. Chicago would not be creating any transportation or venue infrastructure. If anything it might speed along some backlogged transportation projects.

Sure it'd be overcrowded for a week or so...but I think it'd be worth the visibility and potential investment.

Honda Wheels Stolen

Got my wheels stolen Saturday night (06/09) right behand my house on logan blvd. My 2018 Accord was parked in the alley right behind my house on Logan Boulevard.

Worst thing is that these jerks had to do it on a Saturday, when all dealerships are closed on Sunday, so it just has had to sit there all day yesterday!

Catawba is the "Totem Pole tree" named by first nation indians living within species native range. And original name mistranslated by early arriving europeans. My six year old Catalpas donated to Elmwood Park after celebrating Villages Centennial, were germinated from 125 old historic specimen standing in Mills and Sons Circle park. And have produced flowers for first time in 2018. Over past few years I have had experience managing against aphid populations which after excreting sticky sap, causing sooty mold problem on leaves. I had success using a foliar applied Miticide control product, after IPM management introduction of Lady bugs failed to keep overwhelming aphid populations in check. One main cause of aphid problems on more mature trees regardless of species, is needless applications of nitrogen rich fertilizers which actually attract browsers. Fertilizers should never be applied to healthy trees, or especially trees already in decline, unless suffering from lack of soil minerals or mineral uptake issues. Which forces unhealthy tree to use up much of its precious built up resources. Trees going into dormancy earlier than true fall do so, to make sure enough stored resources remaining to wake up next spring.

It is yet unknown what possible lifespan of a Chicago region planted catalpa is, since oldest examples continue to live on presently past age 155. After 1910's, Catalpa was no longer a popular selection to plant. So most we see today are from age 110-145. And commonly 6-14 years older than house standing next to, if original owners purchased from Nursery back then. I theorize that as a "Heritage class" tree species, representing future generations precious living connections back to early residents and neighborhood founders who planted them.

  • Catalpa is in same lifespan group as Red Oak, Honey Locust, Hackberry, and Cottonwood which have proven to live 185 years at best. And human planted White Ash, White, Burr & English Oak maturing from 350-450, having 600 year lifespans. Even after a catalpas inner core of no longer functional sapwood and heartwood begins rotting out, species can continue to safely stand by regrowing new tubes of buttress root tissue from base of tree to keep upper crown alive.

Humboltwriter was correct with technical info he supplied regarding several Catalpa topics. Such as late leaf production and early June flowering catalpa. I found that slow release fertilizer stakes are not a worthy product, and tree care industry is moving away from regular fertilization of specimen trees. And Catalpa is such a superior harsh urban environment survivor, it would be difficult to improve living conditions. Except for preventing unnecessary construction damage, grade change etc.

Retail leasing comes with many stipulations, this is why you must have a qualified agent to represent you. It's not like leasing an apartment, you need representation and someone qualified to review your lease IN DETAIL with you before you sign anything. There are clauses which limit what you can sell in some cases, what kinds of uses may be allowed in your spaces or what other spaces the LL may lease to in the future. Lots of little things to consider so it's not as simple as just finding a nice space. Do your homework, then do your due diligence, and hopefully find a great space to open a thriving business.

Hi Neighbors, a developer demoed the bungalow next to me, and also ripped out the entire shared walkway between the houses, a portion of which was on my property (they should have cut at property line). As they ripped the concrete from the side of my house, they also took brick from the corner of my house with it and damaged the gutter, maybe even the gutter drain underground. I just saw the damage after maybe a month, due to the area being inaccessible from the fencing they put up. No one even told me they damaged it (nice right?), and the developer isn't calling me back. The developer is an LLC setup just for this house, and will probably disappear soon. Do I have any option besides spending money I will probably never see again to sue them?

Napkin math is $1500 in repairs and inspection, assuming the gutter drain was not damaged underground, which would be a nightmare.

The neighbor on the other side has also had damage, and the developer he got in contact with was 'not helpful' to say the least, and the alderman chief of staff told him it was a dispute between neighbors (how is it a neighbor, it's a developer!?) and told him to contact his home insurance company (what!?). Obviously he was just trying to get rid of him. Maybe forgot to leave the envelope on the table.

In addition to what Paul and Kevin advised, as soon as you've filed a lawsuit, your attorney can look up that property's legal description, and may be able to record a "lis pendens" (pending lawsuit) notice against that property. The title company should then see that recorded legal notice when they search title for the next sale closing, and will often require that some sales proceeds be held aside at next closing, to purchase a title indemnity (ti) bond, usually for 150%- 200% of your suit's "damages sought" amount, thereby helping to assure the title co. that no judgement eventually awarded to you against the property, sellers, or subsequent buyers will go unsatisfied (due to a lack of funds later), esp. whenever prop. is refinanced or resold, after your suit is finally resolved.

In the meantime, threat of a lis pendens law suit notice & recording "may" be a further inducement to sellers to repair/clear the damage, settle the suit, or negotiate to settle damages in good faith, ASAP.

A real estate attorney will need to advise on feasibility & costs involved. Letting your attorney know best costs to repair your damages, whether the prop. has been resold, and when it should be completed and/or sold & closed will help him advise you on best, & most cost-effective strategy right now. (The realtor may be able to help fill in some of those timing blanks.) Good luck.

Missing Cat from 2700 block of Sawyer

My cat Bentley has gone missing. He is a small tan/grey tabby with white paws and black stripes. His front paws are declawed. He disappeared on Sunday June 3 from my condo on Sawyer between Milwaukee and Diversey. He is not used to being outside and is scared by loud noises. He is a friendly cat and tends to like people. However, if you try to pick him up he will struggle and scratch you with his back legs. He is quite vocal. He has a chip. If you have seen him please call or text 773-520-3055.

  • yes - do ask neighbors to look in their basements and garages - and go down the alley and make meowing sounds..call his name..listen for reply from garages......then ask owner to open... sometimes a cat will go on a porch in the area thinking it is theirs... Also find out who feed cats in the area - he might be going there to eat. DO NOT GIVE UP - sometimes it takes a while.....

  • In addition to my other comments - - is your microchip actually registered to you? Are the phone numbers and address up to date? Find your chip certificate and call them to make sure of that.... also put up a sign at your vet's office - and other vet's in the area.... and keep looking out the window - walk around the neighborhood - look under bushes.....they are sometimes hidden by greenery... I hope your friends are helping you.

There’s a small brown / gray tabby cat that’s been hanging on my block the last couple of days, she/he is timid but sweet. I’ve put out cans of tuna and a bowl of water the last two days which it seems to be enjoying. Just wanted to see if this is anyone’s missing kitty.

Where are you located exactly? There are missing posters all down Kimball of a gray tabby that looks just like this one. Noticed them over the weekend. It went missing about a week ago from a house near Wrightwood and Drake if I remember right.

Also, you can take him to any vet and they will scan him for free to see if he is microchipped and has an owner.

With trails taking shape as quickly as they are, it's urgent we push for improvements that create safe walking and biking options for accessing the river.

One area where we're working on better access to the Chicago River Trail is on Logan Blvd. from Rockwell Ave. to Lathrop Homes.

If you've ever biked or walked along this stretch, you know how perilous it can be for people walking and biking.

This is where we'd love your input. Are you familiar with this part of Logan? Do you live, commute through or shop in this area? What changes would you like to see?

Please take our nine-question survey and share widely with your friends, family and colleagues.

Thanks!
