Candidate for Illinois attorney general robbed at gunpoint
A candidate running for Illinois Attorney General was robbed at gunpoint while he was taking promotional photos for his campaign Thursday afternoon in the Northwest Side ward where he's also the Democratic committeeman, according to his campaign manager and authorities.

  • Multiple offenders, yes. A teenage punk on his first offense? No.

Hard to prosecute dealers in other states who facilitate straw sales. If it happens in Illinois, take away their licenses and destroy their inventory.

yes - that's it! you are on the right track! now you are getting the picture.

we can disagree on how the laws and enforcement should be changed, but we agree that they MUST be hardened and changed.

keep it up. more ideas are needed. and they need to be voiced in in protest, in public, in spectacle.

logan square is turning into a shooting gallery. you will join to raise your voices...the only question is how many have to fall before you do.

Bucktown - Church bells ringing all night long

Hi All - Does anyone have any insight into the church bells going off every hour the past few nights?

  • Michael McDonough Resident of BelCragin

The church bells wouldn't be St Hedwig on Hoyne and Webster by any chance would they?

  • They stopped last night, so it looks like it’s been resolved. I did email the church but did not get a response. Thanks!

Recent string of shootings 1900 Block Sawyer Ave.

Our block had two drive by shootings (thank goodness no one died) within 7 days of one another that the Alderman reported as gang related. No problems on the block that I'm aware in the previous 2 years we lived here. Anyone know what's changed lately in the area where we'd see this sudden increase in drive by shootings?

  • Neighborhood gang has been shooting at each other. An internal strife. Good thing is they know who each other are, so hopefully they eliminate each other. Bad thing is, bullets have no name and so if their aiming is off, anyone can get hit.

  • Michael McDonough Resident of BelCragin

Thats just it,they don't aim they just drive by while pulling the trigger. They don't care.

I would like to touch base with the owner of a vacant piece of land near our home. Google maps gave me the address for this piece of land, and I found a name associated with ownership for that address via a website that is not an official city of Chicago website.

In looking up the address on the city of Chicago website's tax portal, I can't find the owner's mailing address to reach out to him - or even a pin number for the address (the message I get is, "No records have been found for this property location. Please try again."). I can't even verify the name I have is the accurate name of the land owner.

Has anyone run into a situation like this? Do you have suggestions for how I might touch base with the land owner? The land is NOT city owned, as verified by the Alderman's office. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Hi all - thanks for your help here (specifically Brad and Maplewood John). Apparently the CTA runs under this land, so it’s “property class 0” (CTA owned, to my understanding). I’ve been in touch with the CTA to try to get a response for my inquiry.

I’d also like to flag that property ownership is incredibly public! This isn’t a strange concept!

    Thanks again!

  • You're welcome Krisi! Good luck.

Peoples Gas Pricing | Survey

Hey Loganites-

I get a monthly email comparing my gas usage with similar homes to ours. Apparently, we are super inefficient compared to homes of similar size. We live in a north facing, late 19th-century brick cottage home with radiate heat. Most of the home is original, as there is no real insulation between the brick and the original plaster. Windows are fairly new and our house is around 1900 square feet. Our December bill came in around $270.

What are you gas bills? Thanks!

  • nearthehighway Logan Square resident since 2002

you can rent a infrared thermometer with a screen that will show you all the 'cold spots' in your house. Its pretty cool! It becomes very clear where your problems are.

  • I pay to heat 3 residential units (don't ask why) and I am always surprised when I get those usage letters telling me how well (or not) I am doing compared to my neighbors. According to those, I must leave the front door open on one unit and hardly heat the others!!! Neither of which is true so I am also curious as to how they make their comparisons...by the way, I keep my house at 68 in the day and 60 at night.

My business was a 20 year tenant in the building immediately north of the parking lot that was once the Olson Park and Waterfall. At the time of the waterfall that building (2850 N Pulaski designed by Alfred S. Alschuler) was the ILG Electric Ventilating Company of Chicago. It closed in 1990 or 1992. At the same time as the construction of the waterfall and park Mr ILG bought land in NIles in 1934 to create a park for his employees and built the Leaning Tower at 6300 W. Touhy. The family later donated some of the land and the tower to the YMCA. The Y deeded it to the Village of Niles and the Village recently refurbished it. It would be interesting to know if there is any records of interviews with Mr. Olsen and Mr. ILG discussing their two highly unusual public spaces.

I too remember the Olson Rug waterfall. When Marshall Fields took the building over ,they removed it to make a parking lot.

  • From the address posted, it looks like Penumbra; it's a shame if that's the case--the hub and I had dinner there a couple times before we moved to IP, and the food & service were lovely. Hope they get their act together and have some consideration for the neighborhood.

  • That does indeed look like Penumbra, although the temporarily closed Cafe Bella is right next door. Both places have good food. Service at Penumbra is friendly, and Bella is good for takeout. Perhaps this is just a one-time thing. Bella is being remodeled and re-concepted. They may have cancelled their waste pickup and then realized they still had a fryer full of gunk.

Gunshot at Cortland and Armitage

Does anyone have any info on this? I thought I heard a single gunshot around 5:30pm on 1/9 but second guessed myself and didn’t call the police and now the police have the street cordoned off at Cortland and Albany with detectives looking around. Quite a bit of police activity.

  • Anyone who actually shops at this bodega can also check food products expiration dates,,,,cleanliness of store,,the selling of untaxed cigarettes (No tax stamps on packs),,,any visible violations and report it to 311. Take pics if you can.

There was a family store at the SW corner Dickens and Albany run by the Pold family. The group I ran with hung out there and Palmer Park in the 1960's. Pretty quiet back then. Haven;t been there in a long time. I wonder if it is still a store front.

Wilmot Properties currently demolishing 2942 W North Avenue

Residents of the 32nd and 1st ward should be interested in the fact that Wilmot Construction have made multiple large donations to both Alderman Waguespack and Alderman Moreno. This building was a contributing element to Humboldt Park, which is on the National Register of Historic Places the building faces it on North Avenue just east of Humboldt. Hopefully they can preserve the facade at least. https://www.illinoissunshine.org/search/?term=Wilmot%20Construction,%20Inc.&table_name=candidates&table_name=committees&table_name=officers&table_name=receipts&table_name=expenditures

Strack and Van Til closing Elston location

Strack and Van Til is closing its Chicago Logan Square location by the end of April. Usually my third or fourth choice, but a shame nonetheless. What will replace it I wonder? Ha Trader Joe's?

  • The original plan for Chick Fillet was the old brewery lot next to Home Depot where Value City "furniture" is now. Supposedly Proco Joe didn't like some of the views of their CEO and created a scene for publicity and used his famous third world thug tactics to halt them. The site across from Popeyes is a better location for a drive through so Moreno may have benefited them.

  • Chick-Fil-A and Popeyes are different. Chick Fil A doesn't do proper fried chicken, just cutlets and nuggets. I find them vastly overrated, but to each their own. There are several others in town now as well, so if you really, really want to pwn the libs you can just go downtown and have at it.

Missing Cat

Our backyard cat got into a fight with another feral cat last weekend. She seems like she got injured and has disappeared. We hoped she would come back (she sometimes disappears for a couple of days), but we haven't seen since Sunday. Any news on a sighting is appreciated. She is super friendly (often mistaken as an escaped indoor cat).

Scylla is a female tabby, just about a year and a half old, smallish (but has her winter belly for sure!). She has some orange markings on her back. Please see attached photos. She was last seen around Rockwell/Lyndale on Sunday 1/7.

Thank you for any leads!

Recommendations for replacing building entry doors

Greetings, neighbors-

Asking for recommendations again. Our building's two entry doors are in dire need of replacement. Years of "wear/tear", weather and handling has caught up with these doors and now they are falling apart. I am looking for an expert matter that can replace these and hope it can be replace with auto door closer that will close these doors quietly and prevent these from being slammed. I have a neighbor that releases her frustration on these doors.

Please advise and again thank you all. Your recommendations have been life savers.

  • We went to American Thermal Window Products for our two entry way doors and are very happy with the results. americanthermalwindow.com

  • KPG Logan Square resident since 1987

We also used American thermal for a back door on a crooked porch. Others said they wouldn't or couldn't do it, but American Thermal had no problem and it's been two years now with no problems so far. They are very easy to work with. A little bit pricey, but it was important to get this door secured.

  • Andrew Carpenter Realtor Edgewater home owner and Chicago Reator

If your doors face south it's best to go with steel doors, if not wood always makes a home or condo building look beautiful.

School Project: Logan Square gentrification

Hello, I'm working on a high school project about affordable housing and gentrification in the Logan Square neighborhood.
If you're a renter/home owner or a member of an organization that is concerned about this issue, would you please answer a few questions?(Please identify which when responding)

Would please define gentrification briefly in your own words?
What kind of inequity is in play with regard to this issue (racial/economic/other)?
Are the existing conditions sustainable?
What would be a solution and how would success be measured?

The word gentrification was invented in the 60's by a person that lived in a Kingdom. It is an observation of human behavior coined in a place that does not recognize Individual rights and property rights as one in the same. Humans fought massive wars throughout history over this principle. Lands with castles see property as title and power that should be controlled and doled out by those in power.

Do a project on personal liberty and how the right to own property or not erodes liberty. Does allowing a 3rd party to control an individual or an individuals property lead to corruption and looting? If government used it's power to protect each individual equally vs if a government used it's power to take from one individual and give to another.

The inequity at play is the loss of an individuals freedom. An individual is the smallest minority.

granting gov power over the individual will be used negatively and unfairly to benefit only those in power. Even if the benefit is to earn votes and get media coverage so they can win a seat in Congress, leaving the voters they duped behind with nothing but pandering to cling to. There is no definition of success in the context of using gov against an individual, not to protect but to take from.

  • will h, could you please post a link to a survey or Google form, so responses are more private?

    Hi Will,

I suggest reaching out to Sharon Hoyer at the Dill Pickle and Mark Fishman at Fishman Properties. Also Gina at Bird's Nest Salon, and Rick at Logan Square Automotive. The perspective of people who both own/run businesses and live in the neighborhood would be interesting to hear.

Best of luck with your project!

A common misconception is that when you earn more and enter a new tax bracket, your whole income is then taxed at that new rate. This blog post will hopefully help you understand tax brackets a little better.

    Understanding Tax Brackets
I have had a number of clients ask me if they should stop earning income to make sure they don't enter the next tax bracket as they fear it will affect their total tax liability. The fear comes from the belief that if they go from the 24% tax bracket to the 28% tax bracket, all of their income will now be taxed at 28%.

Bryan, it might be fine if you posted helpful info without attaching a link to your business, but it is obvious that this is not simply an "act of kindness" for my neighborhood when you're posting to multiple neighborhoods and attaching your calling card. Anyone else without water, roughly near California / Armitage?

On hold with 311 right now, but at least 2 houses on Francisco (ours and a neighbor) are without water...

Anyone ever experience a city water outage and know how long that typically takes to get repaired?

water is on, but from four days before xmas through day before new year's eve, california ave. at armitage to cortland was torn up to fix and upgrade water lines on an emergency basis. my water was shut off on two different days, but 311 call confirmed the emergency, and the second day there was a sticky notice on my front door. my contractor told me if water is off on all faucets throughout the house it is a city shut off. if only one, or other sputter and run, you may have a broken / frozen water pipe in or just outside your house. hope it is the city, so stay on hold and let us know.

  • yeah, it is indeed a city issue.

no water on Francisco between Bloomingdale and Armitage, it seems.

  • they did turn water on in between the two days ours was off, so keep trying. better than a frozen pipe, i guess.

Know someone at risk of foreclosure in Puerto Rico? They may find resources here.

Apologies if this isn't the forum to post this. I thought local residents might have family affected.

Derecho a tu Casa or Right to Your House — a coalition of legal aid groups providing information and assistance to homeowners facing foreclosure offers resources at its website to educate homeowners and also provide legal representation for those who qualify for assistance.

  • Greatly appreciate your post. As a Puerto Rican, it was painful to read. I applaud The Intercept for its honesty and accuracy in portraying the plight of the Puerto Rican people. Will definitely follow on Twitter. Thank you!

Anaida, David Dahan wrote on the 2008 wave of foreclosures and sees the same possibility in PR. Graham Elwood who posted the video talked about how he believed what his bank and Obama administration told him to do to save his house in 2008. The guidance ended up making him ineligible for renegotiating his loan and resulted in foreclosure of his home. I hope this never happens to anyone in Puerto Rico. Please consider following Graham too. He may post follow up stories. If there is any update or new info I will add it here.
