Logan Square's New Boutique Hotel Will Incorporate Vintage Grace's Furniture Sign
LOGAN SQUARE - Plans to convert the Grace's Furniture building into a boutique hotel are moving forward. Not only did scaffolding recently go up, but also the developers and local leaders, including Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa (35th), intend to host a community meeting on the project in early June, according to a flier that has not been made public yet that includes a final rendering.

  • Would be very excited about this if done right.

It's not too big, it would support the bars and restaurants already here and hopefully draw in more retail.

Such a great location right between O'hare and the Loop

  • Looks like they were knocking holes in the wall already today.

  • happy to see this empty building is getting a new, productive life!

Tree maps

Here are two maps I have generated from satellite and city data showing the extent and location of the tree canopy in Logan Square as well as the approximate locations and density of treated ash trees. A young sapling can take a decade or more to get big. Easy to plant saplings should be planted next to trees not long for this world. The park district should plant tree thickets so if one tree dies we don't have to wait another decade for another. Young saplings are cheap and easy to plant. When they do Earth Day in the Spring the BCO should be allowed to plant trees instead of merely mulch and pick up litter. That might violate contracts with outfits like Christie Webber however.

I don't think you need to put fertilizer stakes on mature catalpas, as humboldtwriter says they are just late bloomers along with the kentucky coffee trees. The main thing to do is to trim off any dead and storm damaged wood. They are old trees though and sometimes old trees die. If you tell me which ones you're talking about I can go look at them. There are totally dead trees all over the place around here, I would think that would be a hazard...I called 311 about a huge branch hanging above the sidewalk on kedzie a few months ago, but it's still there. Keep an eye up when you're walking around when it's windy, that's all I have to say on that...

And for BrandonBear, almost every tree in Ravenswood was removed during the longhorn beetle epidemic. And I don't personally care about potentially violating some clouted up contract.

New Taco Bell in Logan Square (Coming Soon)

How do you feel about this?

Mailbox Regulations?

Does anyone know if there are regulations for mailboxs? Today my husband was approached by our mail lady. She told him that our block has too many stairs and that we are required to have our mailbox mounted to our wrought iron fence instead of our house. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this or anything similar to this. I found some regulations on the usps website but nothing to answer my question. My mailbox is easily accessible, it just located on my front porch up 8 steps.

  • Yes - I have a friend that rec. notice to have her mailbox moved to ground level. This was at least two years ago.

  • Am I the only one who is a bit shocked that USPS carriers, known proudly to tout their perserverence through any weather, are crippled by a set of stairs?

I guess we found their kryptonite.

Que Lastima. 37 years. Wonder what's gonna replace it. Another "upscale" restaurant, or pricey cocktail bar?

  • Or will this in fact make her the greedy landlord now? Of course, she won’t be seeking to maximize rent. I’m sure she’ll rent to a non profit for below market rates.

  • I honestly can’t believe it was open for this long. The neighborhood has changed so much, in terms of demographics. I’ve been here for 24 years. I’m ready to move on as well.

Looking for shared warehouse space

We are a small import company who would like to expand into distribution. All we need is space in a certified warehouse. We don't need much space as we are a small company and this is mostly just for licensing purposes.

  • G

I know not exactly what you are asking for but I have a completely empty 2 car garage available.

  • You might look at The Plant - it's a shared warehouse space. It may not be for you because they do have a lot of expectations about sustainability, etc., but it might be worth looking into: http://plantchicago.org/

Drywall repair and painting - recommendations?

Hi, neighbors! We sustained water damage from the heavy snow and a bad roof over the winter. We're just about done with our roof repairs. (Thanks to all the great recommendations on here, we went with Nyberg Exteriors and have been pleased with their service and professionalism.) Now that the roof is fixed, we need to get the interior drywall on a few ceilings and walls repaired/replaced and painted. Any recommendations from good, honest contractors (who are licensed and bonded)? We haven't been impressed with the ones recommended by our insurance company. Many thanks in advance!

  • HumBo, I am looking for a guy to do some drywall work. In fact I emailed Slobo this morning, sounds like that wont work for me.However, Leo sounds like he could potentially be an option. Just wondering if he has a business website or anything. I like to do some digging around before cold calling. Did he have a business name?

    Thanks

  • MT

Vicente Fernandez did work for us a few times and the drywall quality was great.

"do you speak english -- thank god." same EXACT script. her mother's in northwestern, card is over-extended, blah blah blah. i guess word got around that it worked, so the scammers are working it. so adjust your need to respond (if any) accordingly. (by the way, i gave the second scammer the loose bills in my purse. it's a REALLY cold day, and she took the time to give me an education. that's always appreciated.)

Horse Radish? Plants or roots?

I just read where you can freeze the root.

Please e-mail (klh@mindspring.com) if interested. Once you plant it, it is yours for a long time..and the leaves are tall and nice ....and you can dig it and leave part of the root in the ground and it will come back.

  • Hi NW...I don't have rabbits by me (feral cats and lots of backyard dogs..) and the leaves actually smell a little like strong horseradish (well, to me..) -they sure are attractive....so wish I could answer. But you are welcome to try it...(unless these plants would deter the rabbits from he other tasty ones.....just a thought...)

  • A site that lists "safe" things to feed captive rabbits included horseradish. Thinking horseradish may require less watering than turnips. Glad you posted and made me hunt-down more info.
No pesticides in decades here; never will. Neighborhood feral cat is too old and slow to actually nab a rabbit ... saw two hawks fail vs bunny last Spring (yay).

Turtle in need of home!

Hello!
My friend recently moved and asked if I could find a home for her turtle. It has a tank and some food. I cannot keep it sadly! It's name is Baxter and really needs a loving home!

  • Duke Animal at 3900+ N. Ashland also treats turtles, etc. They even have adopted the 'office turtle' named Heidi.

    Please contact Michael..he seems perfect!

  • k_alt Northcenter

One of my friends was able to bring her turtle to the Garfield Park Conservatory to live the rest of it's life with other turtles among the plants. Might be worth contacting them or other conservatories in the area to see if they would take another one. If you do choose to adopt it out to someone please make sure it's someone who knows what they are doing and will care for it well. Sometimes it's hard to tell through the internet if that's going to be the case.

Sewer drains in gangway

Does anyone know of a sewer company or a plumber familiar with the sewer system in 100+ yr old buildings and where the gangway drain empties. The building shares a common wall with building next door and each gangway has a drain for rain/snow water runoff. Have had a camera line through main drains in both buildings showing no leaks, however there is some heaving in the basement floor of one of the buildings. Any ideas on how to proceed short of digging up the basement floor? Looking for someone who has had experience with old buildings.
Thanks for any help with this.

Most floors don't heave, the outer foundation and nearby floor goes downwards and the center of the floor stays where it is. Most drains, don't necessarily have anything standard, except they usually headed towards the main sewer either at a 90° or some type of 45°. Angled towards the Outlet or the street. If there's an underground downspout drain nearby, it probably heads there, but that's rare in my opinion. A plumber that does a lot of rotting may have a better idea than me on this. Looking down the gangway drain and you can sometimes see the curve of the pipe and the direction that is heading and it's probably a straight line from there to the Sewer or Street.

Thinking about my previous post from this morning detailing "bedrock" being 7-8 feet below Sawyer Avenue, I got curious about the area's geology and found an Illinois State Geological Map: Surficial Geology of the Chicago Region: Chicago Loop Quadrangle published in 1939 covering the North Side from the lake west to Cicero: http://isgs.illinois.edu/node/4856.

There are 3 locations on the north side that have "thinly covered" Silurian Niagaran Dolomite Formations. These would be mounds of limestone (dolomite) just below the surface. One is in Logan Square bounded roughly by Kimball - Belden - St. Louis - McLean (2 streets west of the dig on Sawyer mentioned in my last post), a small spot runs a few hundred feet northeast from Hirsch & Spaulding in West Humboldt Park and a larger dome encompasses Smith Park (surprisingly a former quarry) along with an equally sized area south of Grand Avenue where there is a City of Chicago limestone quarry today. Contrast that to the Loop where it takes approximately 80 feet of digging to reach bedrock (the same dolomite limestone) to support the caissons under Loop high rises.

    Also of interest:
On the same map the shoreline of ancient "Lake Chicago" (an expanded Lake Michigan) was drawn. In Logan Square around 4000 years ago the shore of "Lake Chicago" was a few blocks east and parallel to what is now Milwaukee Avenue. Amazing to think that the Native American trail, now known to us as Milwaukee Avenue, has been in use for over 4000 years!

By the way, this has nothing to do with sewers, but might have relevance for drainage.

I haven't gotten any e-mails since established..how do I get back on???

  • You have to e-mail then and re-register..I think that is what I did...no trouble since I posted..

  • LG, try contacting EB to inform them using the "Feedback and support" feature on the bottom of this page. Seems that did the trick in the past.

Is this a decent price for a hot water heater replacement?

Hi all, my hot water heater has been kind enough to warn me it's about to go. Got a quote for an EB-recommended plumber of $1500 for a 40g gas tank (another $460 to add on a booster valve, which I'm considering). Replacing valves but no need to move gas lines and we can use the existing venting - it is in a tight-fit area. Never done this before, sound about right? Not sure I have time to shop around....this is for a condo I will probably stay in another 2-5 years.

For appliances, I look at the consumer reports recommended, find the best price online, and find someone to match the price. If they carry the item, Best Buy will always match an online delivered price

Looking for Hardscape/Landscape Design/Implementation Recommendations

Hi neighbors - I'm looking for recommendations for a hardscape/landscape company. Looking to do a complete makeover of the backyard. Thanks for your help!

  • Mike New to the Neighborhood

Thank you everyone for your input and recommendations!

  • Krisi N. If you stream Netflix, "Love Your Garden" and "Big Dreams Small Spaces" are a couple shows that might inspire & inform on the subject. We had a crew redo a small garden (14x30), reused existing plants and installed a handful of new. It was a full day of manual labor and it ran $1300.
