lost dog - rolo

our foster-to-adopt dog took off on us last night.

last seen heading down side street by palmer square

please call 773-969-6283 with information

  • Tim

It is a huge responsibility to become a foster dog parent. These foster pups deserve a trusted caretaker, one who can keep them safe. I hope the dog is found safe.

  • tim - your comment is completely unhelpful in finding rolo. i have fostered dozens of dogs and helped them find forever homes. i'm devastated i was not able to help rolo do the same and i do not appreciate the implication i'm an untrustworthy caretaker.

if you happen to see him or have a helpful tip, please let me know

  • Tim

    It's devastating

What would you do?

I am on my bicycle crossing California by the Popeye's heading east, there is a car coming Westbound on Diversey, making a right hand turn to get onto the Kennedy, the woman driving the car, doesn't want to stop for me, despite me having the crosswalk signal to go, she honks, flips me off, does stop only cause I was in the crosswalk.
I have her car pictured and plate number.

  • @Fiat124 You are flat out wrong. I have data. Last month my stop sign camera logged around 650 flagrant no excuse violations (>10mph) like you saw in that small sample on youtube. There were 0 bike violations. April there were 750 car violations, 0 bikes exceeding my threshold. No cars...

Getting hit by a car is around 100 times worse than a bike. It's false to equate the two like so many here have. Car drivers must burden 100% of responsibility. If you can't drive a car and avoid idiot bikers and pedestrians we would all be safer if you stuck to Uber.

It sounds like the car in question, did, in fact follow the rules by stopping and giving way to the bicyclist...albeit with unnecessary honking and using the middle finger. On the contrary, the bicyclist in this example, Bart, did not appear to follow the rules and could have been seriously hurt as a result of his actions. Bart appears to be grossly misguided and misinformed about how to properly ride his bicycle.

Cats Outside?

What is the policy on housecats being allowed loose outdoors? I frequently see one leaving an apartment near my house and it has been “aggressive-defensive” to my dog. Tonight was the most concerning because it sliced at my dogs face unexpectedly from underneath a car.

I dont know exactly know which apartment it comes from and dont plan to go knocking on doors asking who's cat it is. Im just curious if there is a cat “leash law” and who enforces it.

  • While I appreciate the sentiment, in this specific case, I've seen the exterior door left open for the cat. While many dogs would ALSO love to be outside and roaming free, they simply are not allowed and I personally believe the same should be overtly true of housecats as well,...

While I appreciate the sentiment, in this specific case, I've seen the exterior door left open for the cat. While many dogs would ALSO love to be outside and roaming free, they simply are not allowed and I personally believe the same should be overtly true of housecats as well, ESPECIALLY if they aren't fixed.

Accidental or not, pet owners are 100% responsible for their pets. So if this person's cat swiped my dog in the nose and he had to get stitches, that should be on the owner.

I essentially wanted to see if this was something we could avoid by getting ahead of it and having a grasp on the legality of the situation. I googled it but found ambiguous results and was hoping someone had more expertise here.

  • I totally understand! I was more responding to the other commenter who said cats who are allowed out are not loved. Obviously I would have to make more decisions if I felt our cat would be mean or distructive in anyway. She is super sweet and I am more concerned...

I have never run into issues with cats like you are but hate when people choose to leave their dogs off leash. My dog is very scared and becomes aggressive when a dog, even a friendly one, approaches her. So I get that!

The Ragged Stranger: Strangers Galore

...army man who went by the name “Snuffy” and who used to frequent joints down Western and Oakley avenues. Alas, the police investigation into “Snuffy” found he was not the man killed in...

While many tried to force a name to the body, others tried in vain to pull a name from the body. Father J.C. Quille of the Working Boys home at Jackson and Racine swore he knew the body could but could not recall the name.

A husband and wife, proprietors of a carnival attraction, the ‘Twenty-In-One Side Show’, visited the morgue. Mr. Frederick Munster, 36 years old of 1009 west Adams street viewed the body and said it looked like a former employee of his.

Here is the short version: Minor, drunk, stolen car. It was around 4:30pm and I was watching TV when I heard this loud BOOOOM. I seriously thought the house next door blew up. So I ran outside and saw the car in the yard. Two girls jumped out of the car and ran. Then one of them came back to get the keys. I tried to call the cops, get a picture of them and not loose my calm. Cops showed up, interviewed everyone (at this point the entire neighborhood is on my corner). Then another neighbor showed up and was like " I saw them walking in the alley". So the cops looked at me and were like "you are coming with us to identify them....". So I experienced my first chase. In a police car. Nope, this was never on my bucket list. We finally caught the driver in an alley 3 streets over. By that time 6 cop cars showed up for back up. She was a minor and drunk. All this time I tried to get ahold of my landlords but neither of them answered their phone. Anyhow, the landlord came home right when the tow truck showed up (6pm).

Good thing no one was in the yard or on the sidewalk. This could have ended VERY bad

  • Looked and sounds like a episode of 'Chicago PD"...wow....

(The key thing is the surprise...esp since it was stolen...too much drama for a hot day..but thanks for sharing...)

ATM Skimmer scams run rampant - even at bank ATMs

Word to the wise: No matter where the card reader is located - banks, stores, gas station pumps - ALWAYS yank on it before inserting your cards.

This story is about Lakeview, but it could just as easily be about Logan Square or anywhere.

HVAC contractor

Hello all,

Am looking for a reliable contractor to work on the a/c units in a two-flat. We have two a/c units and two high-efficiency furnaces; one contractor is telling us everything needs to be replaced but we are seeking other bids. If you've had a good experience with an HVAC contractor, any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks--

Any recommendations for tree service?

The city recently cut down the ash tree in front of our house because of ash borer infestation. The tree still looked healthy but I’m no arborist.

Can anyone recommend a tree service to treat our two remaining ash trees?

I spoke with the Bureau of Forestry and was assured that they would not remove these trees if they were recently treated.

  • If the trees are on the parkway - the city does treat them - but it seems it does not help - the city tries to keep them up as long as they are not dangerous....sooner or later they take them down - and replace them later in the year......

Best place to sell appliances,etc?

We've recently (almost!) completed a reno and have a few things to sell that are in good shape/not used (coin op W/D, pedestal sink, light fixture, etc) that seem like things a landlord or builder would be interested in. Is Craigslist still the best place for this type of thing? I have tried the 'marketplace' on Facebook somewhat recently too and didn't have any luck. Are there better apps or sites? I've heard a lot of them people just try to get you down to giving it to them for free on the apps... Thanks!

Is it legal for a scooter with an out of state plate to park on a permit only street?

I have a friend visiting who will be bringing a scooter here. i know you can park scooters on permit only streets without a zone sticker with an IL plate, but does the same apply to out of state plates?

Thanks!

  • You can only park a scoot in permit parking if you have a city of Chicago patking tag. It's a little circle that you put on license plate. City clerk sells them $40 I think

  • The "little circle" is the equivalent of the city sticker on the windshield of a car. It has nothing to do with parking. Motorcycles are exempt from zoned parking restrictions.

Did City Racial Discrimination Cause the Shutdown of a Chicagoland Restaurant?

— Craft beer bar pioneer and live music destination Quenchers’ last night in business will be tomorrow, June 16. It’s closing after nearly four decades in business to become a doctor’s office after ownership sold the space at 2401 N. Western Avenue.

Did City Racial Discrimination Cause the Shutdown of a Chicagoland Restaurant?
The city of Blue Island shut downIsland Bar & Grill in March after a shooting outside the restaurant in March. But its owner - and "a dozen" protestors - believe that the real reason the city shut it down is because of its majority African American clientele in the mostly white and hispanic suburb, CBS2 reports.

Too bad...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/soccer/ct-world-cup-2026-20180613-story.html

Too bad the city will overspend on tax incentives to attract companies but won't pay to bring some worldwide focus...

U.S., Mexico and Canada win joint bid for 2026 World Cup; Chicago won't be a host site
The World Cup is returning to the United States, and this time, Mexico and Canada are along for the wild ride. Chicago, however, will not be among the host cities. A North American joint bid won the rights Wednesday to host the 2026 edition of the celebrated soccer tournament, defeating Morocco and bouncing back from an unfathomable U.S.
    http://www.chicagotribune.com
  • That is true in hosting an entire event...hosting a game or two wouldn't have nearly the same scale of issues.

  • That is also more true when you have to create infrastructure. Chicago would not be creating any transportation or venue infrastructure. If anything it might speed along some backlogged transportation projects.

Sure it'd be overcrowded for a week or so...but I think it'd be worth the visibility and potential investment.

Thanks!

I'm new to Chicago but have visited for work 20-30 times over the past 2 years. Mainly stayed in the Loop so I'm choosing Bucktown / Wicker Park based on word of mouth and advice from others. I'm 24, young professional, consultant, female.

Basically I'm looking for any tips / insight for the search - locations to avoid, best ways to search, etc. I've contacted a few locators in addition to searching on my own. My move-in date is any time after August 10. I'll be there August 10 - 13 with the intention of viewing an applying for places (and hopefully signing a lease).

Thanks in advance!

Speed Humps by the Map Room

I noticed speed humps being installed on Hoyne south of Armitage by the Map Room. Speed humps can cause reckless drivers to lose control of their vehicles and create more dangerous situations. Wouldn't it be better to drop the speed limit to 20mph, set up a speed camera, and ticket at 25mph? Speeding there would plummet immediately via economics.

  • Another solution, albeit perhaps wildly unpopular, would be to turn Hoyne into a one way street northbound. Locals would enter the neighborhood from Armitage by using the southbound one way Leavitt (which has a stop light.) Cars in transit south on Hoyne to avoid heavy traffic on Damen will be SOL.

  • they don't even fill potholes without a complaint from residents... you think CDOT added speed bumps to one random residential street one their own?

Honda Wheels Stolen

Got my wheels stolen Saturday night (06/09) right behand my house on logan blvd. My 2018 Accord was parked in the alley right behind my house on Logan Boulevard.

Worst thing is that these jerks had to do it on a Saturday, when all dealerships are closed on Sunday, so it just has had to sit there all day yesterday!

It's one thing to be a thief, it's another to be just that inconsiderate!

Here are two maps I have generated from satellite and city data showing the extent and location of the tree canopy in Logan Square as well as the approximate locations and density of treated ash trees. The ashes are not likely to be around too much longer, I know many were recently removed from Palmer Square. The canopy map is based on data from 2011 so some things have changed already but I hope this helps someone with planning. We are planting a few more trees on our property this year after seeing this. Catawba is the "Totem Pole tree" named by first nation indians living within species native range. And original name mistranslated by early arriving europeans. My six year old Catalpas donated to Elmwood Park after celebrating Villages Centennial, were germinated from 125 old historic specimen standing in Mills and Sons Circle park. And have produced flowers for first time in 2018. Over past few years I have had experience managing against aphid populations which after excreting sticky sap, causing sooty mold problem on leaves. I had success using a foliar applied Miticide control product, after IPM management introduction of Lady bugs failed to keep overwhelming aphid populations in check. One main cause of aphid problems on more mature trees regardless of species, is needless applications of nitrogen rich fertilizers which actually attract browsers. Fertilizers should never be applied to healthy trees, or especially trees already in decline, unless suffering from lack of soil minerals or mineral uptake issues. Which forces unhealthy tree to use up much of its precious built up resources. Trees going into dormancy earlier than true fall do so, to make sure enough stored resources remaining to wake up next spring.

It is yet unknown what possible lifespan of a Chicago region planted catalpa is, since oldest examples continue to live on presently past age 155. After 1910's, Catalpa was no longer a popular selection to plant. So most we see today are from age 110-145. And commonly 6-14 years older than house standing next to, if original owners purchased from Nursery back then. I theorize that as a "Heritage class" tree species, representing future generations precious living connections back to early residents and neighborhood founders who planted them.

  • Catalpa is in same lifespan group as Red Oak, Honey Locust, Hackberry, and Cottonwood which have proven to live 185 years at best. Compared to Heritage class Green Ash & American Elm that reach maturity from 180-220, having 300 year lifespan. And human planted White Ash, White, Burr & English...

Catalpa is in same lifespan group as Red Oak, Honey Locust, Hackberry, and Cottonwood which have proven to live 185 years at best. Compared to Heritage class Green Ash & American Elm that reach maturity from 180-220, having 300 year lifespan. And human planted White Ash, White, Burr & English Oak maturing from 350-450, having 600 year lifespans. Even after a catalpas inner core of no longer functional sapwood and heartwood begins rotting out, species can continue to safely stand by regrowing new tubes of buttress root tissue from base of tree to keep upper crown alive.

Humboltwriter was correct with technical info he supplied regarding several Catalpa topics. Such as late leaf production and early June flowering catalpa. I found that slow release fertilizer stakes are not a worthy product, and tree care industry is moving away from regular fertilization of specimen trees. And Catalpa is such a superior harsh urban environment survivor, it would be difficult to improve living conditions. Except for preventing unnecessary construction damage, grade change etc.

Anybody have an estate sale company to recommend?

I"m trying to help my in-laws and I've been researching estate sale companies. So much is all over the board including Yelp reviews and BBB rating (for what that may be worth) and I can't even confidently narrow it down to five. AND I'm really reluctant to recommend only one just in case they aren't happy ORRRRR if other family members aren't happy with the outcome.
I figured this was as good a place to ask as any. They've lived in Buffalo Grove for over 50 years. I've attended high end sales and picker's sales. They would be somewhere in the middle with some valuables.
Thanks for reading and for any insights offered.

  • llitman I'm a happy resident and have been here for years.

Sandy Lane is good, Manderley Estate Sales is good. Others to consider are Ampersand, ImagineThat, and TraderMerchants.

  • Thank you for the leads everyone. What a process this is!

    Good luck to you Anne.
