Water Main Progress

Does anyone have any inside info on NPL Construction's progress of the water main projects on the Northside? I can't find much in the media. I found some hits on DNA (RIP) and Sun Times about disgruntled aldermen in June/July, but there seems to be radio silence since then. The various ward (e.g., 47th/40th) sites list statuses of specific projects, but not much else.

Specifically, is this as big a debacle as it seems? Are the aldermen continuing to apply pressure to NPL? The long night is coming. What lies in store after the first major snowfall and subsequent first street plowing?

  • Good question. They tore up Wilson again this week. This time for fiber optic lines. While I appreciate all the upgrades, this needs to get done already. Our street has been a mess since April.

  • MKW in Lincoln Square 25 years in the Square

Between what's going on here along Leland, and now on Lawrence and along Lincoln AND around Amundsen where my kid goes to school, it's really unbelievable. I don't think all of these projects are the same (gas meter/sewer replacement/whatever) but you'd still think there would be some coordination to not inconvenience so many areas at once. And, now that winter is effectively here, I don't expect much more progress until spring :(

  • Citizen Pain Citizen Pain

I thought I was the only one who smelled a debacle. What a mess. It's as if our local leadership has been preoccupied with other things and hasn't noticed the post apocalyptic street-scape that never seems to improve; like a slow descent back into pre-civility.

The lines are literally halfway down the store aisles. And that is once you are in the store. You have to go out into the Rob Me Dim barely light parking lot. The lighting reminds me of a Kmart parking lot, from like the 1980s. Lighting technology has changed so this lot should be light up like daylight at all times. It is seriously dark and a carjacking/mugging waiting to happen.

To those grousing about the 'diversity' comment, I think the point was that it's a store that accommodates those who favor lower prices - either thru necessity or choice. I for one prefer lower prices to a piano bar any day when I'm shopping for groceries. I've shopped all the majors - Jewel, Mariano's, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's - and Jewel definitely has lower prices overall. If you want to pay more for a glitzy shopping experience, that's fine, but leave somewhere to go for the folks who don't want to pay $10/lb for green beans in the deli.

  • Hey if you want diversity so bad go to Fresh Farms on touhy west of central. I'm vegan so I go for the best & widest selection of produce only. Produce sections at Jewel, Mariannos & Costco suck - very limited & usually not fresh.

Neighborly Litigation (Chadha v. NPES)

Many on this forum talk about litigating, be it for some unneighborly thing or other. Well, here is your chance to read the behind the scenes workings of the Chicago Way in its entirety (link below - get some popcorn and settle in) and VOTE.

This is the culmination of 7 years of attorney fees and a waste of our taxpayer-funded court's time/resources, in my opinion, of course.

Absolutely worth the read. Citizens in this neighborhood need to be aware of how their neighbors are being treated and how their tax dollars are being squandered accordingly.

They also took the WHOLE change compartment as well. Always remember to lock your car doors. Happen by oakley between winnemac and argyle. If anyone has camera and captured it please message me.

Sorry to sound like a jerk, but if you left your car doors unlocked in the city at any hours for any length of time, you sort of deserve that. Think of it as a relatively inexpensive lesson. I love the city BUT there are some basic rules you NEED to follow:

-LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS. Your car will have items taken from it.

    - Do not leave valuables in your car where they are visible. Locked or not, it will be stolen. And to a scumbag lowlife thief, that pair of free headphones that came with your iPhone are valuables. They will cause $500 in damage to your car to break the window to get them.

-Do not sit idling in a car looking at your phone or napping. You will be carjacked or robbed.

-Do not walk alone at night. You will be robbed or mugged.

-Do not work in the garage at night with any door open or unlocked. Likelyhood of being robbed is high.

-Do not leave your house locked or windows open ever. Yes even on the second floor I close and lock my windows. This is not paranoia it is reality in the city..

    -Conceal and carry.

  • I'll add two more: when you're gassing up, lock the car so that while you're using the pump and hose, some thief can't jump into your car and drive it away. I've been doing this for a long time and just last week, this type of car theft happened to...

I'll add two more: when you're gassing up, lock the car so that while you're using the pump and hose, some thief can't jump into your car and drive it away. I've been doing this for a long time and just last week, this type of car theft happened to a fellow at a gas station. It was on the broadcast news. And, stop living in your phones as you walk. A fast phone snatch is sooo easy.

I do differ from conceal and carry; I don't want to own firearms. I grew up with parents who owned guns and taught my sister and me how to use them (22, 38, Luger, air rifle). However, about two years ago, three teenaged punks approached me quickly. My hands were in my pockets and I pressed one hand against the outer pocket (to make a bulge) and said, "do you really want to find out that I have a concealed carry license?" They turned and ran...phew! So...everyone, be safe and not so trusting.

Seeking parking space

Hello neighbors, does anyone know how I can find out about parking spaces available for rent in the Margare Terrace section of Uptown? I live on Carmen and it's particularly hard to find street parking. I would be willing to pay someone to rent their spot.

  • Typo....meant Margate Terrace

  • Jeffrey Littleton 3rd Generation Uptown

I believe the surface lot just west of Sheridan on Southside of Foster leases parking. It's close, but not technically Margate Park.

A “savvy billionaire” would be unlikely to shut down a business just because the workers unionized. But it could have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. Or just one more hassle he didn’t want to deal with to eventually, hopefully, make DNAInfo and Gothamist work.

Crosswalk Signage Needed

There is a crosswalk at the intersection of Foster and Claremont, however there are no signs in either direction notifying drivers of this. I've seen children on their way to school almost get hit by speeding cars attempting to make the light at Western and Foster. This needs fixing immediately. I've requested 311 to do this at least 6 times over the summer. So far....

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

It's not 'walk one block' - it's TWO blocks: one was to, and one way back from.

Cars should stop for pedestrians. What has a one-way street got to do with this question?

I saw a driver stop for pedestrians, that's the polite and sensitive thing to do, instead of drivers complaining on Every Block about things that get in their way and slow them down.

  • Citizen Pain Citizen Pain

Cars should respect pedestrians if the pedestrians are using a crosswalk. If the pedestrians are jaywalking the cars should also stop (of course) sans the respect part. That's the civilized way.

Question about sewer gas smell

Hello, Wanted to see if the community had any insight about a building issue.

This past summer our building had the catch basin outside the basement cleared out of sludge. The following day we noticed a sewer gas odor inside the basement area closest to the catch basin. Seemed like it was coming from the inside drain.

We've poured water down the drain, thinking maybe the trap was dry, but it didn't do much for the odor.

I'm not sure whether or how the drains are connected, or if there's a ready fix for the odor.

Any insights would be appreciated! Thank you.

  • Not like paint thinner to me.

  • @MikeGoode appreciate the offer. We're still discussing as a building a good way forward. @DJH no, definitely not like paint thinner. Much more like the smell you get walking near Chicago manholes on a hot day, or by the river.

Last night walking home from the L around 10:45pm. I saw a black kid - 15-18? - trying the handles of all the cars on Claremont north of Lawrence. He then crossed Lawrence and tried the handles of all the cars in the lot where the CorePower and PureBarre are (I did call 911). Apartments?

Just curious if anyone in Ravenswood/Lincoln square have any other resources for looking at apartments in the area? As opposed to craigslist - for all intensive purposes is fine. But I feel there are people in the area who own townhomes that have rentals and just don't feel the need to put them online? Perhaps it relates to just walking around the area and looking for signs.

anyone have any thoughts?

  • If you want a quality place, go to a realtor. It will cost you nothing because the property owner pays. I'm a landlady and I assure you I would never use Craig's list..

  • Andrew Carpenter Realtor Edgewater home owner and Chicago Reator

I'd be happy to help and it might surprise you that you would be able to buy instead of rent. A condo in Ravenswood can be had for under $1200 per month including everything but utilities. There are down payment assistance programs to help you with the initial cost of home ownership.

Carnegie Deli, the famous New York spot (which itself closed in 2016), tried a location in Chicago at 900 N. Michigan Ave. Opened in 1989, it closed in 1991. The space was replaced by the Oak Street Restaurant and Bakery, still open and serving corned beef sandwiches, but no longer matzo ball soup.

"I tried in Streeterville and failed," said Max and Benny's founder and President Lester Schlan. In 2006 Schlan had opened a second location at 322 E. Illinois St. but closed after only six months.

Steingold's of Chicago opened in late August in North Center, at 1840 W. Irving Park Road, as Chicago's newest contemporary Jewish deli, or a "newish deli," as it and others of a new generation here and elsewhere are hashtagged on Instagram.

If that sounds ambitious, Steingold recently revealed they're already opening a second location to meet demand. The smaller, walk-up-only Steingold's Station plans to open later this month in Ravenswood Manor, adjacent to the Francisco Brown Line stop at 4642 N. Francisco Ave.

Other notable new Jewish-style delis include Milt's Extra Innings, part of the Milt's Barbecue for the Perplexed family, which just opened in Wrigleyville at 3409 N. Broadway; and Half Sour in the South Loop, also expected by late November.

What happened to the big Jewish delis in Chicago?
"Why isn't there a good deli in the Gold Coast area where you can get a good corned beef or chicken soup. A big deli like New York has or LA," Susan Wolf wrote into our reader-driven series, "What's the Story?" First, the easy part.

What's happening to our neighborhood?

Been in Ravenswood 30+ years in the same house and over the last few years I've seen more and more younger families move into the neighborhood which is not a bad thing it's a breath of fresh air to see the community grow and flourish but the amount of racism that has come with it is sad especially when your told "This is my neighborhood you don't belong here" from a couple young enough to be your children that is fairly new to the neighborhood so the question is do you believe we are losing our charm as a family friendly neighborhood to these young transplants?

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

There are many neighborhood schools that parents are clamoring to get their kids into! Off the top of my head, Rogers, Blaine, Wildwood

  • smartypants Be Nice

Robin, true, but Blaine, Coonley, Bell, Hawthorne, Nettlehorst, etc. are not in affordable neighborhoods....even for renters. I don't know of anyone clamoring to get into Rogers but would be thrilled if that happens.
