outgoing Congressman Luis Gutierrez explores bid for 2020 Presidential Election

Hope this absurd bid gets stopped ASAP. Gutierrez would appoint OLR to a Cabinet post
https://oururbantimes.com/news/revelation-congressman-luis-gutierrezs-birthday-celebration…
"A private birthday celebration in honor of U.S. Congressman, Luis Gutiérrez, 4th District, in a Humboldt Park restaurant Friday night revealed more than a great birthday cake.

It was announced, to approximately 100 family and friends at the event, that an exploratory committee will visit 25 cities in six months, testing the waters for a Presidential bid by Gutiérrez for 2020.

Gutierrez recently announced that he will not run for his existing Congressional seat and threw his support behind Jesus "Chuy" Garcia to be his successor."

RAKARWOWSKI, You are so totally wrong about me!!! I am a Democrat, anti-Trump, Pro PR. I just want to find out the truth about whether Gutierrez did anything wrong. Part 5
A tenant in Dzis' unit said he paid rent to a real estate company called V.P. Interlink at the same address and had never heard of Dzis.

Attempts to reach Popovych, Kuchmiyov and Dzis were unsuccessful.

    Ocasio: program a success
Ocasio said he doesn't know exactly how many affordable homes were created under the 26th Ward program, in part because his staff destroyed many of its records when he shut down his aldermanic office.

When he was asked about the program, Ocasio tracked down some documents. But those records don't show who bought those homes or how many have been resold.

Ocasio said that when the housing market collapsed in 2008, he let developers sell some of the affordable units to anyone, regardless of income. "Developers said, 'Look, I can't sell these units. We can't find people to buy them,' " Ocasio said. "And so, at some point ... we said, 'Go ahead. You guys need to get rid of it? Get rid of it.' "

The struggling economy also kept developers from even breaking ground on some projects, Ocasio said. Still, he considers the program to have been a success.

"I think there's worse things that an alderman can do with the power of zoning than to build affordable housing," Ocasio said. "In hindsight, there's always improvements you can make. I think, if we had the money, if we had more support from the city, we would have done all the things that everybody else did. ... We didn't have those resources."

Corrupt punk Billy Ocasio is now CEO of Norwegian American Hospital.
Left out sleazy deal where Luis Gutierrez bought townhouse in TONY REZKO development at way below market value and flipped for big profit (yup, that same Tony Rezko sent to prison). Left out corrupt zoning fraud with developer Calvin Boender where Gutierrez sent letter to City "vouching for" developer. Boender and Alderman Isaac Carothers sent to prison by Feds.

Snowblower repair

Hello all,

We're looking for a reliable person or business that could repair our relatively new (2015) Briggs & Stratton that just won't start. We are continuing to work on it but I figured I would ask around just in case. I know that if we let this go, we'll get hit with a blizzard (followed by ruined backs from shoveling...) If nothing else, we can then do what we should have done all year, which is start it and run it every month to keep clean fuel going through the lines....

Any thoughts welcome,

Jeff

On Tuesday, January 15, Duffy, woke up unable to walk and in horrible pain. We rushed him to the vet who sent him to a specialist immediately. The specialist ordered an MRI which revealed one ruptured disc and two compromised discs. Because Duffy is still young and has so much heart and love in him, putting him down is not an option. He’s a dearly beloved member of the family. He was rushed into surgery that night.

Now we are drowning in medical bills of over $8,000. He will be re-learning to walk for the next few weeks and will require therapeutic rehab, which will add to the bills. So we are hoping there are some dog lovers out there who will contribute to our fund-raising efforts and help Duffy heal. I know so many people are trying to raise money these days and people have to make choices. But every little bit helps, so If you are able to contribute, thank you.

Here's the link to our fundraising page:

The picture is of Duffy yesterday, the day after surgery. He's pretty sedated. We're bringing him home tonight, and I'm sure he'll be happy to be home. Now the long process of healing and rehab begins.

future alderman: last Tuesday he woke up and was having trouble walking. Within a couple of hours, his back legs didn't work at all. The tests showed that he has a degenerative disc condition, and that one disc was totally ruptured and two others were compromised. The surgeon repaired the compromised discs. Not completely sure what they do about the ruptured one, but the prognosis is that he's got more good years left. But there was no clue before last Tuesday.

Thanks so much for your help, folks.

West Humboldt Park gentrification?

At some point recently it seemed that HP was going through a slow process of being gentrified, but now it seems to have come to a standstill. For instance, west of california and north ave appeared to be improving and changing for the better, now it seems to be on hold. Has anyone else noticed this?

  • RAKARWOWSKI RETIRED CITY WORKER, CLEANING UP HUMBOLDT PARK

Yes, I will start another thread on the shooting. I answered your question, will answer my question to you about OLR?

  • Jj,
Yes, I know that New Jersey is not near Chicago. Please go re-read my post.
New Jersey was mentioned along with New York, California, etc as "high tax states" as we heard during the passing of the new tax bill.

Why were the flags so expensive? Research who fabricated them; who erected them; and if those companies paid any money to politicians as "campaign contributions" Although it's probably too long ago to do that research. I'm sure the money trail has been laundered by now.

Recent string of shootings 1900 Block Sawyer Ave.

Our block had two drive by shootings (thank goodness no one died) within 7 days of one another that the Alderman reported as gang related. No problems on the block that I'm aware in the previous 2 years we lived here. Anyone know what's changed lately in the area where we'd see this sudden increase in drive by shootings?

New aerial surveillance gives police an eye in the sky
There are already surveillance cameras outside homes, businesses and along streets, but a new type of aerial surveillance that's already being used in some U.S. cities could one day be looking at you. The technology comes from cameras mounted on an airplane that flies around cities and records hundreds of hours of video to better fight crime.

The city is afraid of bad publicity and epecially litigation, then they are of a high crime rate. It i commin knowledge among the rank and file that there are law firms tha pecialize in suing the city, because it' easy. A client, any client can sue the police at no cost to them, and they, the law firms, are guaranteed to have their outrageous fees paid by the city regardless of the outcome of the case.

Wondering about the extent of your work w the dig out, drain tile, etc. Also is the basement finished now? Did they build a wall in front? If they put furring strips on top wouldn't that break the seal/channel? Sorry for all the questions - I've seen this before but not in a finished basement. Thanks for reading!

No worries on the questions! I'm sure not many people have "in progress" shots like this to share!

The foundation is a bit of an architectural forensics case down there; original part of the house was a cottage built ~1887, with a second story added maybe late 1940s. Then at some point more recently someone dug out the basement. The top part of the foundation (which is covered) is concrete block, then hand-formed concrete below that (probably added with the 2nd floor addition), then finally the original 1887 brick. We replaced the first and second floor structures with engineered trusses (yes, it was a major project). The first floor rests on a bonded beam made of concrete block (you can see that running at the top in the picture); the second floor rests right on top of the original masonry (with a new sill).

There was already a wall in front, and yes the basement is finished. We actually had very little dig out; the "3 part" foundation was actually in remarkable shape, so we just had to take up the old slab and dig a small channel around the basement for the drain tiles. From there it was just gravel and a new slab!

The project was a major reno, but what was done w/ waterproofing could have been done without much disruption regardless, assuming the basement was unfinished!

"Both men got out of their vehicles and continued to argue as Puleo went into the store and came back out into the street, prosecutors said", this is from the story on your link. Clearly this bodega IS directly linked to this shooting.

Generally, it is the landlord's responsibility to fix it but can fix it and charge you if it can be proven that you broke it (and the landlord even wants to bother with reimbursement). (I would venture to guess your lease doesn't obligate you to fix such things, especially in an owner occupied.)

Your obligation is to advise your landlord. Email if you have it or call and follow up with a letter. However you do it, let your landlord know ASAP that there's damage so s/he can address it.

Unless it's an emergency situation, I would advocate against doing any handyman fixes yourself. You may cause additional damage or even injury. Let the landlord know so s/he has the chance to fix it or hire someone who can.

"thank god." story about dying dad in hospital, tank on e, needs gas, let me take your number and i'll pay you back. blah blah blah. i swiped my card for her on the pump and left. i knew it was probably a scam. thought, if she just charges the 30 bucks she really needs to get somewhere, it's legit. if she fills it up to 60, it's a scam. well, charge card showed 59 bucks. tonight, day after new years day, another woman (different, yet could have been the first one's mom- both were equally frantic and articulate...i admire their rehearsal skills if nothing else)in a suv waves me over (i'm on foot this time, but same gas station at calf and armitage.) "do you speak english -- thank god." same EXACT script. her mother's in northwestern, card is over-extended, blah blah blah. i guess word got around that it worked, so the scammers are working it. so adjust your need to respond (if any) accordingly. (by the way, i gave the second scammer the loose bills in my purse. it's a REALLY cold day, and she took the time to give me an education. that's always appreciated.)

  • If you were to tell the collection agencies/lawyers that this is your number now & to remove you from their call list that usually works. I had a similar situation with a phone number.

  • I keep a VoIP “land line” for unwanted calls. I never answer it unless it’s a known number in the caller ID. Well worth the $10 a month for the Ooma line. This is also the number I use for my primary number with grocery store rewards cards, etc. since I’m sure they sell the info. The scammers can call all they want.

In looking up the address on the city of Chicago website's tax portal, I can't find the owner's mailing address to reach out to him - or even a pin number for the address (the message I get is, "No records have been found for this property location. Please try again."). I can't even verify the name I have is the accurate name of the land owner.

Has anyone run into a situation like this? Do you have suggestions for how I might touch base with the land owner? The land is NOT city owned, as verified by the Alderman's office. Thanks in advance for any help.
