You may have seen a number of trees that have been planted in the parkways of many of the bikerdike homes and surrounding areas. While it is great to beautify the neighborhood and invest in the long-term benefits of trees, the city missed the mark on this effort. While, gator bags have been placed around the trees, these only provide water for 5-11 hours, not days or weeks. The past month has been quite hot and with little rain, many of the trees are already loosing their leaves, signifying they will not make it.

The residents at the bickerdike homes thought the city was watering the trees. They should have been informed about the new planting and to take part in the care of the trees, but they do not have access to exterior water to help care for them. Our neighbor showed us that her water spigot had been covered over with a lock that does not make water accessible. We tried to water the trees, but being two homes down, our hose does not reach.
If you have newly planted trees and a hoes long enough to reach, please help water them.

  • Tomorrow is another day Happy resident of North Park Village

Susy D - one horse can pull 33,000 lbs. = 1 hp. Believe me, they can pull a lot more than 3 milk cans.

One time I saw a picture of 1 horse pulling a HUGE load of lumber, piled high. THAT was hard for a horse.

People can buy those "pocket" hoses, the ones that shrink when empty and fill when water flows through them. I bought those and they are fabulous! No more heavy hoses to pull to water and put back.

  • my friends have found that those pocket hoses fall apart - have you used yours more than one year? I use 100 ft. + of hose.....umph ! But I do not use the old rubber ones....too heavy for me to schlep to the garage for the winter - too bulky...

my friends have found that those pocket hoses fall apart - have you used yours more than one year? I use 100 ft. + of hose.....umph ! But I do not use the old rubber ones....too heavy for me to schlep to the garage for the winter - too bulky too....I purchased the metal encased hoses AND the skinny hoses....but with the rain we have had these two years - I have not had to water much - I have very big trees in the yard and the parkway - that helps....all my plants are happy....
Now about the horses - I was thinking about them trying to pull heavy loads thru a field....so much resistance ( yes I took Physics in school ) - . But thanks for the suggestion about the hoses.....

Petition to stop a cell tower from going up on the corner of Wrightwood and Ridgeway in Logan

Someone started a petition to push Alderman Santiago (31st ward) in Logan Square to stop a cell array from being constructed by T-Mobile on top of a residential building at the corner of Wrightwood and Ridgeway Ave. I live down the street and would rather not see it from my window.
Here it is if anyone wants to read it over and sign it if you agree that it would be an eyesore/annoyance on a residential street:

https://www.gopetition.com/petitions/residents-for-a-tower-free-logan-square.html#.W0vqdUDt8MY.facebook

Alderwoman Santiago, stop the T-Mobile tower at 3714-16 W Wrightwood Ave.
Target: 31st Ward Alderman Milly Santiago Region: United States of America Please note: While we appreciate support from people who live anywhere, signatures from residents in Logan Square are the most helpful. Please share with anyone you know in Logan Square, specifically those near the corner of Wrightwood and Ridgeway!
    https://www.gopetition.com
  • That’s a tough call, no pun intended. We all want better cell coverage and with that comes cell towers. They have to put them somewhere.

I love EveryBlock and Next Door, but they are very different.

I'm so sorry to be losing EveryBlock. I'm already a member of Next Door, but that is only for communicating to neighbors very close to me. I like getting information on other neighborhoods as well. As an animal welfare business owner, volunteer and advocate, my desire to help pets and their people is not just limited to my own neighborhood. I currently follow 22 different EveryBlock neighborhoods. Next Door won't allow me to do that.

So bummed. Thanks EveryBlock for all you've done to connect people.

Thoughts on Everyblock closing down...It is 'time' for me to leave anyway....

I have depended on Everyblock for recommendations of workers, neighborhood news, crime in the area, good news postings, pictures of package stealing...and lost dogs....

I followed GoFundMe pages that they recommended.
I donated to school because it was posted here...

I read the posts of people that do not have 'kindness' (something we really need these days..) towards their neighbors posts...and I NOW go after 'a troll' when before I would 'just let it go' ...recently to the point of reporting HIM to Everyblock to monitor his comments. (I have never gone to Everyblock before...)
(His 'nasty' comments 'hurt my feelings'....how did I GET to this point???)
Bart doesn't post his amazing pictures any more; and people go after him when he is just posting 'the first to know'...(I'm certainly not the first to know...)
I WILL MISS the kind posts that I have received...and the people who I have truly enjoyed their threads...
but I now won't miss the 'Everyblock' - the one I used to know..as it is no more...
Thanks to the neighbors who helped me; thanks to the neighbors who cared; and thanks to the neighbors that bought me a 'neighborhood' to share with them..

  • Really sorry to see Everyblock close. Does anyone know of a way to save all the comments in threads you've subscribed to over the years? I have a lot of saved information regarding tradesmen referrals, etc. I hate to have to spend a couple of hours copying and pasting. I already took advantage of their setup of saving one's comments and posts to PDF but don't see a way to save subscribed thread comments.
    Thanks for any help!

  • I have been printing the whole thread off the computer..I don't know any other way...Good Luck!

Hi all ...Apologies if you’re seeing this twice, but forgot to select Logan Square in my original post. Wanted to let you know I got carjacked today in broad daylight in Logan Square. I was on Fullerton by the Social Security office at Sawyer. I had just parked and locked my car when two young black men approached me and demanded my keys. I yelled at them hoping I’d scare them off and when that failed, I yelled for help. Several people simply stood by and watched. I do know at least 2 people called 911 — so if you’re out there and you did that, thank you. To the lone guy who sought me out to make sure I was ok, thank you. To the two guys across the street who watched two men throw me to the ground, steal my purse and then steal my car, I hope this never happens to you. But if it does, I pray someone helps you though you did not help me. At any rate, just wanted to give everyone the heads up to be alert. Police report has been filed. Credit cards have been canceled. Locks have been changed. And if anyone on Everyblock did see something they could share with police to catch these guys, that would be appreciated. Stay safe out there!

Instead of baiting my backyard, the city baited the alley for the 3rd time in two months. I am going crazy. The rats are hanging out in my backyard and are setting my sensor light off during the night. Is there anything I can do? Does anyone know of an effective rat poison? Talking to my neighbors is useless since they don't want to be told what they "shouldn't do on their property".

Consider contacting Nextdoor and telling them how you feel they could improve their site? They would want to hear. I actually like Nextdoor because posters are not as anonymous and therefore there is not as much nastiness going on. It is usually more about information rather than editorializing/complaining:)

  • My favorite follow on Twitter is @bestofnextdoor . My one parting thought about EB that I found very ironic is the code that runs this site thinks the word neighbor is misspelled.

  • The Logan Square sites on Nextdoor have almost no content. Hopefully that will change when people migrate.

  • JJ,
I am not trying to insult you, but did you read the original post or the posted report?

It is about cities spending taxpayer money on large verdict payouts, and the way investors that are cozy with pols make a ton of money off of us taxpayers.

  • gpblight 22 Yr East Garfield Resident

This is a MUST READ. Chicago is 1/12 or .080 of the cities listed. YET we issue 81% of the BONDS to pay for 709/877mil of police brutality case losses.

Chicago Taxpayers are floating bonds and paying INTEREST on these brutality cases.

Who can stop this nonsense?????? What in the world is the BUDGET DIRECTOR thinking?

Please READ and say an opinion. I had NO IDEA that Bonds would be floated to cover this loss! Taxpayers not only pay but we pay interest on top of it!!!!

Catalytic converter?

Anyone know where I can get a catalytic converter replaced for less than $350? I have a 2002 honda odyssey. Some scum bag cut it out the night before last on LeMoyne and Kedzie.

There are theft-proof cages you can have installed over your CC when you get it replaced. A quick online search should get one for the M&M of your car.

Thank you JC I didn't know that. I also learned that there is an oxygen sensor in vehicles attached to the converter which is also stolen at the time because of course thieves just cut the whole thing out. This sensor is another $150 and you need it if you wan't your vehicle to pass the emissions test!

We all need to VOTE for people who don't close shelters and mental health facilities. We also need to realize that a good portion of these people just wants to do drugs and be on the street. You can't make them get help. The one in front of the Church at Wrightwood tried to attack me and my 4-month-old. He chased us and grabbed the stroller. Broad daylight, no one came to my aid. Lot's of people out it was a Saturday. I called the police not sure if they even showed up.
I am a foster mom, that's how I help out, I try to save the kids. This case involves a mom who was 8 months pregnant and didn't even know. She and her husband have lived happily in tent camps for 12 years. They were interviewed a few years ago bragging that they love it. Mom is a prostitute and even saw clients while in the hospital, PREGNANT! and got drugs into the hospital. Every day of the pregnancy she did, Coke, Heroin, Weed, Alcohol, and cigs. Baby went through withdrawal. They've been arrested 5 times each for prostitution, drugs, theft, trespassing etc. Dad has 8 kids from 3 moms, one is on the way 6 mos after the one I have. This is the reality of the situation folks. Don't go up and talk to any of them while alone. Tim, you can make bags of food, clothing, blankets and the like and drop them off if you really want to help them. Just saying hi does nothing unless you come with supplies, housing, drug treatment, physch services and a job. Good luck. Vote for Judges that don't let these people back out on the street a million times. Vote for a Mayor and Governor that don't close shelters and clinics.

  • Ms. Logan, very scary for you - glad you are OK.

I simply asked him what he was doing and he came up with some dumb story about his friend asked him to do something... he was drunk. Oh your friend? Can you call her, because she's actually my friend and you're trying to steal her bike.

The bike is locked on a fence in a fenced in yard, so this guy was fairly ballsy because it was 6:30 in the evening in broad daylight with A LOT of foot traffic. I let everyone in ear shot know that he was a thief.

Tiran illegally added basement condos without necessary zoning change and no building permit for illegal construction. Eventual City lawsuits (no kosher inspection / certificate of occupancy for illegal units), contributions by developer to local Alderman (Rey Colon) and Zoning Committee chairman Alderman William Banks "to help make problems go away", and some clout: Patti (Mell) Blagojevitch wife of Governor Rod was real estate agent selling condos for Tiran in another new construction project on Belmont near Chicago River. City inspectors and Tiran associates were indicted in Operation CROOKED CODE. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2005-03-12/news/0503120109_1_condo-couples-checks-and-balances

Should I report this?

This a.m. I found both garage cans kicked towards the alley (and no others on my block)-they were outside my gate...then right inside, a container that was sitting there was obviously moved..so though my gate is 10' with prongs at the top, it appears someone jumped it...and nothing appears to be gone (nothing to steal unless they like garden 'stuff'.
Is it worth calling it in???
Thanks!

Pedestrian and bike safety survey

If you live on or near Logan Blvd/Diversey and you haven't taken the survey about possible bike lane and sidewalk reconfiguration, you can find it at www.ward32.org
It was in his weekly newsletter.

Chicago's 32nd Ward Service Website - Alderman Scott Waguespack
Alderman Waguespack's office serves the residents of Chicago's Ward 32.

  • If there was no parking allowed on Logan it would make things a lot safer

  • I've never seen 'congestion' on Logan boulevard and I live at Kedzie and Logan. I have seen people driving like sociopaths on a near daily basis though.

Seamstress/Tailor

Does anyone know a great seamstress or tailor in the Humboldt Park, Logan Square, Wicker Park, or Bucktown area?
I have a nice dress for a wedding that I need to get tailored!

Thanks!

  • Jennifer, I got things in pretty early so I didn't need them to rush. I dropped off my wedding dress mid- Feb and picked it up early April. I dropped off a jumpsuit early April and picked it up late April. I chose my dates based on my weekend availability though

  • Ditto on Fit N Stiches ... great work. Way better than a dry cleaner ;)

City claims I used 63,000 gallons of water in 2 months

Anyone know what I should do? I already appealed and they said its not an estimate but an actual usage count. My bill has always been within 10% of 200$ per billing, this time it was 300%. Further, I had 4 people move out of my building in the first 1/2 of the billing and am currently the only resident.

I don't have a mysterious faucet running, and even if the tenants who left tried to run up my water bill I doubt I'd hit 63,000 gallons with every faucet on full blast.

I'm concerned that 1) The city will continue to bill me 3x what they should 2) That there is some leak further up stream. Who knows, maybe my foundation is currently flooding and I'll have a sinkhole soon.

  • Barbs hey you kids, get off my lawn!

After reading the FAQ for the metersave program, looks like SFHs and 2-flats are eligible.

  • Some tenants will do this to spite the landlord/owner. Another risk of renting to people and there is no insurance that covers that loss. Pay the bill or the city will lien your property, but dispute it and hope for a refund or credit to future bills.

    17-20 gallons for a 10 minute shower.

1.5 gallons per flush for efficient toilets, buttt old ones are 3.5 to 7 gallons.

15-30 gallons per clothing was cycle for efficient machines, but 30-45 for older models.

Sink faucet on uses 1.5-2.5 gallons per minute. This could equal 2000 gallons of use in one 24-hour period FYI.

Tub faucet on uses 4 gallons per minute. This could equal 5000-6000 gallons of use in one 24-hour period FYI.

Irrigating the lawn and car washing can use hundreds of gallons per use.

Takes a lot of the above to add up to 63,000 but one bitter tenant could easily do it; probably the one who beat up the unit, complained a lot, and left owing you money. Unfortunately the only solution is to raise your rent price to mitigate future risk.

Where to eat?

need a new place, in Logan Square, perhaps a hidden gem for lunch

  • @Megan Tress - I truly hope you rethink updating or removing your comment. I hope to keep this civil and do not want to get into argument, but as an unbiased person in this matter, I find your comment to be extremely unfair and out of bounds for Yelp.

i'm near calf. and armitage. my cat, who usually is content to sit on the porch roof for hours for some reason jumped up onto the lowest part of the upper roof overhang and climbed up to the peak. the roof is too steep for him to get a foothold to get back down and he has been meowing piteously for two hours now. i need to borrow a 30' ladder to get from the ground to the top of my dormer or a 15' one to get from my porch roof to the peak to call him over. he may be up there all night. so looking for asap or first thing in the morning. i am afraid he will try to slip/slide down the sheer edges that are on either side and fall the nearly two stories.. i have left a message for emergency tree service and have a couple friends trying to help but cat keeps getting scared to try and come and retreating to the flat dormer roof.
