Blue Bins

Does any one else have a problem with the blue bin pickups. They haven't picked them up 2 times in a row. They are too fussy. First they had the blue bag fiasco and now they are so particular that if there's one small item that doesn't pass muster they don't pick the trash up. i will just have my tenants toss everything into the black trash bins. What a screwed up city!!

  • krw

Yes, I think blue bins would still work. But I'm sure labeling every product with that symbol (which many already have) rather than those ridiculous instructions would make a world of difference.

  • Thanks, good to know that I'm not the only one trying to do the right thing but having to deal with all the rules. It's not just me, it's having to try to educate my tenants and then of course no control over the blue bins when they are outside.

Michael Allen Harris's Kingdom reveals a young playwright on the brink of greatness
N ow that I've seen my first Michael Allen Harris play, I'm adding him to the short list of Chicago playwrights who understand the difference between drama and diorama. While so many of his contemporaries seem content to schematize Big Ideas by populating narrow, transparent stage worlds with one-dimensional characters, Harris trades in compelling, aggravating ambiguity.

Large long canopy erected without permit

Has anyone in the area noticed a long canopy erected by 1014 Paulina without any permits in the walkway between 1012 and 1014. It's attached to 1012 and happened within the last few weeks. I was going to mention it earlier but left town on business. Any feelings about it from the community, it has to be 60-80 feet long. I noticed no one has posted anything about this especially when such bold work is done without posted permits.

  • Scott Rappe Architect, Father, Fourth Generation East Villager

It sounds like what the zoning ordinance would consider a 'structure' and as such would be a violation of the side yard setback requirement. It is potentially a fire hazard as well, depending on what it is constructed of and whether it would hinder fire department access to the upper floors down the length of the building. You can file a report using the City's 311 system and they will have an inspector look into it.

  • 63samchow 5 years in the 1000 paulina area,walking dogs

Thank you very much for the input. I will do it right now. Thanks again

  • Call the proper building department right away. The contractor will be issued a stop work order and the plans will have to be reviewed and approved before work is allowed to begin again. My guess is if you don't see a permit outside, they do not have a permit. Otherwise, why wouldn't it be there?
