The South Loop retail scene is about to get a bit more crowded

In addition to its South Loop retail project, GW is working on a 127-unit apartment building in Logan Square near the 606 trail and a 37-unit apartment development at Belmont and Sheffield avenues in Lakeview. The firm also plans a multifamily project at Western and North avenues in Wicker Park.

This article has 3 other Chicago locations (Show)

A venture of GW Properties paid $10.4 million for the 77,000-square-foot property at 1113 S. Jefferson St., the site of a Marathon gas station and garage, confirmed GW principal Mitch Goltz.

So while the broader trend may be working against retail developers, the South Loop's growing population of high-income residents is working in their favor. Roosevelt Road has become the South Side's version of the North and Clybourn shopping district near Lincoln Park.

Wood statues stolen from Roscoe Village

Hello neighbors,

I had 3 painted wood carvings stolen from in front of my house near Cornelia and Damen in Roscoe Village last night. They were chained securely, but someone cut the chain or unscrewed the eye locking them. If anyone happened to see anything, or sees some wood carvings lying around somewhere, please contact me. They are about 3 feet, 4 feel, and 6.5 feet tall.

I have reported this to the police, but am posting just in case someone might have seen something suspicious. Like a pick up truck riding down the street with a totem pole. I have photos if anyone has questions.

Thank you,
bill carroll

Censorship on EveryBlock

I would like to make a formal complaint against censorship here on Everyblock. I made a post referencing a recent crime on Red Line Belmont El Platform - a man was apparently publicly urinating and woman told him to stop, he threatened to kill her, she took his photo then tried to walk away when he apparently attacked her from behind and tried to murder her by throwing her down on the electrical train tracks. At the time of my post the dangerous criminal was still at large and I attempted to alert others and circulate his photo so that he could be apprehended. The good news is that this dangerous criminal was caught and is now being prosecuted for attempted murder.

Why was my post deleted/censored?

My post did not contain any racial epithets, incitement to violence or suggestions of illegal acts - instead it was just to note a bad crime and encourage regular citizens to help catch a dangerous criminal.

I am increasingly concerned by the amount of censorship on Everyblock and elsewhere in the social media world which is increasingly being dominated by a small group of social media monopolists who only allow one point of view and censor Conservatives, anyone that supports President Trump, anyone that wants our immigration laws or laws against attempted murder enforced.

C'mon!

  • how is that woman who was attacked doing?

    her courage should be commended.

its ridiculous that we allow behavior to go unchecked. Criminals are emboldened.

remember those kids from arizona who caused a stink last(?) year about their horrible chicago experience because the guy engaged with someone who was obviously a nut? same thing. we all know you shouldn't pee on an el platform. more than a few guys have died from it.

New restaurant?

Anyone know what’s going in to the former Dive Bar space on Halsted just south of Cornelia? Looks like they’re painting the outside in preparation for something.

  • Do we need another restaurant in the neighborhood.

  • I'm curious too, that was supposed to be the reopening of mEAT, but those signs have been down for over a year now. And, yes, we certainly need as much restaurant choice in this neighborhood as possilbe, anything is better than another closed building.

  • Li, if you think you know what the neighborhood needs, by all means....

go ahead and take the risk and open up your own business.

or, sit on the sidelines and take e-potshots at those who have the courage, conviction, stamina and work ethic to try.
