Venting - Stolen From Alley

I have a small table in the alley that I use as a canopy for the abandoned cats' food and water. I have seen people try and walk off with it before. I called to them that it was mine and to bring it back. Yesterday someone removed the legs (which were like PVC pipes) and threw the top and the rock I use for weight on the ground. People are such (fill in the blank). There is no reason to steal four pieces of plastic tube that was obviously of use to someone else. Whoever took them I would like to tell you where to stick them.

  • No offense but anything left in the alley is considered garbage and pickers come by all the time not to mention neighborhood punks/drunks. Any chance you can do it in your yard vs the alley?

  • I have a small table on wheels that you can have. Let me know if you would like me to send you a photo.

Riis Park Safety?

Hey Guys,

Just finally moved into the neighborhood and noticed the park. It looks beautiful, but overall is it a safe place to go walking/are there better times of the day to go?

I moved from the Portage Park neighborhood and frequented Portage Park itself so was just wondering how it compared to that.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

  • To tell you the truth
nothing is safe today maybe someday thangs
will change for now no and
    congratulations on your new place

Last month a very determined Limousin cow in southern Poland did something pretty remarkable to avoid the slaughterhouse. As the cow was being led from her farm to the truck, her owner - identified by news sources only as Mr. Lukasz - warned the handlers to tranquilize her.

Dear Neighbor(s) of the 16th District of Chicago,

Leaders of the Eddy/Addison Block Club, West Portage Park Neighbors Association and the Portage Park Neighborhood Watch FB Group have organized this Public Safety survey.

The purpose of this survey is to gather data from the Northwest Side Community. Data to show both our local and "downtown" elected officials that WE are watching what is happening to our community. For too long, it seemed that our that our concerns were being brushed aside. That is a response that can no longer be tolerated. To tackle these challenges we need to come TOGETHER as a community, as ONE group, ONE movement, to demand that our concerns be addressed. To help accomplish this, we invite ALL the elected stakeholders in the 16th District to take part in this discussion. We hope they will actively participate and take heed of the concerns of our various communities.

We are also asking you, members of this community, to commit to becoming involved in this movement. A plan moving forward will be based on the information collected here. Please be honest in your selections.

We know that together we can successfully regain our police that have been reassigned to other areas and aid our district in reducing crime in Chicago's largest, geographical, police district, district 16.

You might be wondering how this is different than the petition that began to circulate last night. The petition DEMANDS for our officers back. This survey however shows why we NEED them to be back.

Please feel free to forward this survey link to anyone who resides, owns a business or works anywhere in the 16th district. Results from this survey will be posted for the community to see after the survey link has closed.

This survey link will be up until 6pm, Sunday, February 18, 2018.

To clarify Dennis' comment, you have several options.

You can purchase up to a four month extension sticker for $8 per month. This can be done only once for the time you own the car with the same plates on said vehicle. If you expire at end of January, your four month extension sticker is good 'til end of May. In this example, by the end of May you will then need to buy your annual sticker and May becomes your new expiration month going forward.

If you have used your four month extension, you can purchase a 7 day permit for $10. This permit is attached to the rear window (driver side) and allows you to drive legally with an expired sticker.

There is also a repair waiver that requires a written estimate and a SOS form submitted to Illinois EPA.

    Hope that helps.

Anywhere near Jeff Terminal is REALLY bad. Just be alert, and if you see one, make noise, yell at them. They will run the other way. Just an FYI. I watched them for over an hour or two around 6 pm Tonite in my alley. Working on my car. They don't want to be around people. So, respect them and rodent problem will be a thing of the past. They can hang in my alley all they want. I welcome them, we need them people, so don't get crazy. Just watch your small animals, as you should in the first place.

I am looking for an adoptive forever home for my back gate cat. Why not keep her, you ask. Because I have my cats and if they do not accept her than I have no place for her. I also have dogs and a bird (all on different levels of the house). This cat will NOT be free. The money needed will be used for her vet bills. What I am proposing is that she goes from my alley, to the vet, to your home. She, I say she but that is my impression, has recently become friendly with the extreme cold. I am now able to pet her but she has never been at a vet or in a home that I know of. She will need to be spayed/neutered, tested for feline leukemia/fiv, and worm tested. Portage Park animal hospital accepts the Friends of Animals certificates for reduced spay/neuter, unless you have a relationship with another vet of your choice, or my vet. I am not working and will do a Go Fund Me page to save her if needed.

Anyone who wants to help me save a life can respond to this post. I will supply an email address once I see any responses. I don't currently have a picture but if I can get one I will add it.

Once again, not looking for a lot of feedback which is why I am only posting here on the original post. Anyone wondering what happened? Well, last week I got her into a shelter (won't name it) which had good intentions but since she has never been inside a home or to a vet (which I had said) she was handled as if I was surrendering a house pet. She freaked out and was then turned away as a "feral". I had no choice other than to bring her back to my alley and hope she would still trust me enough to come back to me. For all of you who are going to say why not take her to Animal Control - have you seen the news? And this was last week before they made the news for overcrowding, plus she was frantic and I didn't want her put down immediately for that. Good news is that she is still coming back to me, friendly but more skittish again. Back to square one. I'm still trying to get her in a shelter (one that I also won't name) where I have taken this kind of cat before and the outcome was "adopted", that is what I was told, and I have to make myself believe is true because you never really know. A cat or dog isn't going to search you out in ten years, like a child who was adopted, and say that you saved, or ruined, their life.

OK, anyone who got this far thanks for caring enough to read this through. I just need to share the heartache that this causes me so that I can remember that there are others out there who care, maybe not on my block or street, but somewhere in the city.

  • Hi Helpful..it sounds like Kitty is a canidate for trap neuter return. There is a group called Cats in my Yard. Along with the Chicago Community Cats Facebook page hopefully you can get some advice/assistance. Tree House (on Touhy and Ridge) sell low cost outdoor shelters and there are also do it yourself instructions online. I agree do NOT call Animal Care and Control.

“Today's actions send a strong message to U.S. businesses that hire and employ an illegal workforce: ICE will enforce the law, and if you are found to be breaking the law, you will be held accountable,” said Thomas D. Homan, ICE Deputy Director and Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Director. “Businesses that hire illegal workers are a pull factor for illegal immigration and we are working hard to remove this magnet. ICE will continue its efforts to protect jobs for American workers by eliminating unfair competitive advantages for companies that exploit illegal immigration.”

Compassion

OK, so during this extreme cold most of the people around here are worried about cars, and some might be worried about their children or the elderly. I am asking for anyone who reads this to look out for the stray and unwanted animals that are out there. I am still walking out in the cold to feed the "left behind" cats from my other post. OK, so during this extreme cold most of the people around here are worried about cars, and some might be worried about their children or the elderly. I am asking for anyone who reads this to look out for the stray and unwanted animals that are out there. I am still walking out in the cold to feed the "left behind" cats from my other post. I am sure a lot of you are not reading this from Belmont/Cragin but if you have friends or family in Belmont/Cragin ask them if they see abandoned/neglected animals out there in the cold. I ask all of you to try and help an animal in need if you can, with food, water, an outside shelter/house, a donation, adoption, something. I can't be the only person that is bothered by this.

  • Jamie Ann~ i sent you an email last week. If you're still interested lemme know & it's yours

  • I don’t see anything in my email or spam folder.. I just messaged you, and included my phone number. :)

One look at why and how zoning has become a focus of property owners.

If this is not behind a pay wall, here's a think piece about how property owner opinions on their rights to have a say in community development evolved. While it doesn't set out to change anybody's opinion, having it in mind helps me understand why I hold certain value judgments. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/03/upshot/zoning-housing-property-rights-nimby-us.html?comments#permid=25419406

How 'Not in My Backyard' Became 'Not in My Neighborhood'
In Seattle, the neighbors don't want apartments for formerly homeless seniors nearby. In Los Angeles, they don't want more high-rises. In San Jose, Calif., they don't want tiny homes. In Phoenix, they don't want design that's not midcentury modern.

Fox 32 Chicago was live.

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured Wednesday morning in the Belmont Central neighborhood on the Northwest Side. Due to police activity in the area, No. 77 Belmont buses are being temporarily rerouted in both directions from Belmont, Austin, Narragansett and Belmont, according to police and the CTA. http://bit.ly/2CiPGLq
