anything they use to fill the separation will fall out eventually. short of replacing sidewalk fill with a good flexible material.

City sticker question

I have a question regarding fees for people who go to buy a city sticker years after they should have. I can’t seem to find a response in faq sections regarding this topic! Can you help?

My friend went to buy a city sticker for his car recently but was told he’d need to pay 3 yrs retroactive of city sticker prices because he’d lived in the city w/this car for 3 yrs w/o buying a sticker meaning there wasn’t just a fee for not buying the sticker 3 yrs ago but a few PLUS 3 yrs of whatever the sticker cost is.
Is that right? This policy deters anyone from trying to do the right thing. He would of paid the fee but to ask him to pay yrs worth of stickers just made him walls out the door and buy nothing.

Concrete stair repair and iron railing repainting contractors

I saw a post on this same topic from 2014, but was looking for more up to date information. I am looking for a contractor to do concrete repair on the front steps of my house. Specifically, I have a crack and separation along the base of the first riser at the walkway (see photo). Other than this there is no major problems with the concrete. Ultimately, what I would like to have done is crack repair, new parge coat, and iron railings prep and paint. Looking for suggestions on contractors used for similar projects in my area. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Ken. That’s why I’m looking for a contractor to give me some guidance as to whether it should be patched or if the walkway should be mud-jacked or some other magic that would give me a lasting repair. I appreciate your response. Thanks again.

Dead Body Found Down the Block

A week ago today I was walking to the local grocery store near Belmont and Knox. As I approached the corner I noticed a news man taking video behind the senior center. My initial thought was that perhaps he was doing a story about the senior home. But when I returned from the store I noticed many more news reporters had joined the scene. At this point I questioned the first reporter I encountered. He mentioned that a dead man was found in the alley shot to death. Which that alone turned out be false to some extent. As I continued down the block I encountered another reporter at the other end of the alley off of Barry Ave. At this point I was a little more surprised because we was getting a lot closer to my residence. I said to him, "I hear it was fatal, any specifics as to what happened?" And he said that they found a man dead in the alley but no one knows what was the cause of death. He said he even walked the alley to see if he noticed a sign of the crime scene but could not pinpoint the spot where the body was found. There was no blood on the ground or anything, not even yellow tape. I mentioned that the prior reporter said it was a gun wound. And he said that no one really knows, that his report indicated that the man was beat to death and found a couple hours earlier lying in the alley.
The Tribune report:
That was it! I never heard an update. And this startles me to the core because my grandchildren and I live right down the street from this crime scene. For all I know we have a murderer on the lose in the neighborhood!
Does anyone know who to reach out to to find out more? I'm curious to know if they determined who the individual was? Cause of death? Was it a local resident? Was it gang related? Was it someone that may perhaps been murdered elsewhere and just dumped in the alley? So many questions are unanswered.
-
Yes, just as Bellhome says... go to your local police station or call them and tell them of your concern and questions. Each station has its own number.
You never mentioned there were any cops around just reporters. (?!) were the police there when you approached each reporter you confronted? -
Clef in Jeff Park, no now that you mention it I didn't see any officers around. Then again, the police were alerted to the body sometime around 7:30am and when I walked by it was already around 10:15am. I don't know if that was enough time for them to conduct their investigation though.

Shootings on Belmont Ave

I am posting this because of my grave concern for the area on the S. end of Portage Park and the N. Side of Belmont Cragin. Between March 5 and April 5, 3 shootings occurred between Long and Central on Belmont Ave where several pedestrians and vehicles were present and most businesses were still open. Gun shell casings were recovered at one of the shootings and the last shooting on April 5, a shot fired through the Laundry Mat window at 2pm in the afternoon. It has been pure luck that no one has not been shot and killed. Business owners attended a Business CAPS meeting for the area and the police were notified that at least 2 businesses had captured the incidents on video surveillance. Not one officer responded to check the recordings. We were told that if there was no victim then there is no crime. I don't know about any of you but I think this is absurd. All 3 shootings happened in Alderman Reyboras's ward who is in charge of public safety for the entire city. These incidents bordered Alderman Santiago and Alderman Villegas' wards. The ward boundaries run through the middle of Belmont Ave. Gerrymandering at its finest. The two police districts also run down the middle of Belmont Ave, the 16th district being on the N. side of Belmont and the 25th police district being on the S. side of Belmont. I am reaching out to the bordering wards to insist on more beat/bike patrols for the area and insist that the police review tapes to try to identify the criminals even when there has been no direct victim. I am also asking for residents to please call Ald. Reyboras's office as well as Ald., Santiago and Villegas. If any adjacent neighborhoods/wards think that this isn't going to crawl through the ward boundaries they are sorely mistaken. Our area, the Belmont Central corridor has been hit hard with robberies, vandalism and shootings. We need our neighbors to step in and help. Ward 30 Reyboras, 773-794-3095, Ward 31 Santiago 773-278-0031, Ward 36 Villegas 773-745-4636.

Kelly~ a few years back there were shots fired at Lockwood/Drummond by the park at 5pm. Witnesses too, but no "victim" When I went to the CAPS meeting this incident wasn't even in the report! When I asked why,I was told the same thing......no victim, no report taken. WTF! I will contact Millys this week & altho I'm not in the other wards, will call them as well. Keep up the good work

I have a friend who lives near Belmont and Laramie. I feel considerably less safe going to visit him and his family today than I did several years ago, His garage has been burglarized 2X in the last 2 years for starters. When I do visit them I don't drive there for fear of my car being vandalized...or worse.
To the law abiding citizens of nearby Portage Park and Belmont Cragin: Be vigilant but be careful. Be ware of your surroundings. And most importantly, if you see something, say something. Don't allow the criminals/gangbangers to rule your neighborhood.

I am looking for an adoptive forever home for my back gate cat. Why not keep her, you ask. Because I have my cats and if they do not accept her than I have no place for her. I also have dogs and a bird (all on different levels of the house). This cat will NOT be free. The money needed will be used for her vet bills. What I am proposing is that she goes from my alley, to the vet, to your home. She, I say she but that is my impression, has recently become friendly with the extreme cold. I am now able to pet her but she has never been at a vet or in a home that I know of. She will need to be spayed/neutered, tested for feline leukemia/fiv, and worm tested. Portage Park animal hospital accepts the Friends of Animals certificates for reduced spay/neuter, unless you have a relationship with another vet of your choice, or my vet. I am not working and will do a Go Fund Me page to save her if needed.
Anyone who wants to help me save a life can respond to this post. I will supply an email address once I see any responses. I don't currently have a picture but if I can get one I will add it.

This is so wonderful. Thank you for getting him off the streets. Hopefully he does well and is able to adjust. Will you be able to visit him/her?

I said I would call and check in. He is the second cat I have taken to this shelter. I don't know if my heart can take visiting him. I don't believe that cats are truly "feral". The "feral" cats that I feed come out when they see/hear me and they are starting to meow too. They don't run when I put food out in front of them. That isn't feral. I said in one of my other posts that we don't call homeless people feral. Homeless animals, even animals born homeless, can come around to the right person. They can sense who is kind and are afraid because of how they are treated by some cruel people.
I appreciate all the nice comments but I don't put these comments up for that. I just want people to know that it can be done.

Sidewalks Need to be Repaved

Does anyone know who is responsible for repaving the side walks here in the city? Some of the sidewalks in my neighborhood are in terrible shape and I wasn't sure if this is something that the city or the owner of the residence is in charge of getting fixed.
Thanks in advance.

Concrete used to be about $100 a yard, but that was about 10 years ago, there's a formula U use, by length x depth x thickness, so it depends on how much the City pays for it, vs. how much needs to be laid!!!
-
Also, U can't just hire someone to come out lay concrete and expect the City to pay half of the Bill, the City will tell U to go Scratch!!! U have to through their shared programming to be eligible for the Discounted Price! But if U really want it for...
Also, U can't just hire someone to come out lay concrete and expect the City to pay half of the Bill, the City will tell U to go Scratch!!! U have to through their shared programming to be eligible for the Discounted Price! But if U really want it for free, Try NBC 5 investigates to put a flame under the City's A-s in an effort to have Ur problem rectified!!! Also, Denise, that rate seems very low to me, don't forget when U do Concrete, U have to pay Laborers, Concrete finishers, time the concrete truck stands idle, etc., So it's going to be a little more than just by the sq. Footage, plus they only sell it by the Yard that I know of!!! You can try googling a concrete place and ask them, like Zinga to give U a better quote if this helps, U may actually need a permit as well if U plan on ripping up the Concrete Yourself, & don't forget disposal fees!!!!

2 Pitbulls Running Loose Fullerton/Parkside/Major/Belden

2 Brindle Pitbulls are loose. Last seen on Belden going towards Austin. Had gray collars. They were Brindle, brown/gray, from what I saw. Obviously you would know if they are yours. Please people. These dogs will be killed if they are taken in and not claimed. TAKE CARE OF YOUR PETS.
-
Please let us know when they were sighted. Date, time.
That helps the owners know when and possibly how they got out.
Hope the owners step up! -
April 9th, approximately 2:45 - 3:00. I don't know what happened to them after they ran off. I called the area police station to alert them that the dogs were running loose and posted here. That was all I could think of. Around here this stuff is seen all the time.

What is most surprising is that there isn't as many incidents as one would think given just how bad it is. It's just a matter of time until a small child gets nailed at one of these useless intersections. I'm not a round a bout person, but to see 9 out of 10 cars blow right thru these signs is shocking and something really needs to be done. Especially, given the proximity of Gray School = 2 blocks.
