Does Chicago Take Gun Cases Seriously? You Decide.
A twice-convicted felon was pulled over in Uptown on November 19 after police said he ran several stop signs and evaded their attempts to stop him. Martise Lewis, 29, crashed his car, jumped out and ran away, police said. Officers soon located him and took him into custody.

Judges are appointed. And after their term is up they appear on the election ballot as either keep or replace. If the citizenry chooses to keep them they repeat the term. If they are chosen to be replaced, a new appointment is made to fill the vacated post. So referring back to my original post, the simplest, and really the only way to enact change in this matter is to vote them out. It's not up to us to vet the replacement or to ensure that they are qualified to preside over that court. Bu the point is, if enough people are fed up with the criminal element in our community being released in a never ending cycle, only to commit crime after crime, then what we need to do is vote out these judges until they understand that their jobs are on the line unless some change is made. Simple.

  • Mute Truth is not determined by majority vote

"the only way to enact change in this matter is to vote them out. "

I have to disagree. They need to be warned now that if their behavior continues they will not be reelected. Letters phone calls emails. Now. No need to wait til elections to show disapproval.

Snowblower repair

Hello all,

We're looking for a reliable person or business that could repair our relatively new (2015) Briggs & Stratton that just won't start. We are continuing to work on it but I figured I would ask around just in case. I know that if we let this go, we'll get hit with a blizzard (followed by ruined backs from shoveling...) If nothing else, we can then do what we should have done all year, which is start it and run it every month to keep clean fuel going through the lines....

Any thoughts welcome,

Jeff

Billy Ocasio kept a Starbucks from opening up in the 3600 block of W. North Ave. This was about 12 years ago. Now we have a Dunkin' Donuts* in a strip mall complete with traffic clusterf**k. Combined with Baskin Robbins, Little Ceasar's $5 pizza, etc. it is an excellent place to buy cheap junkfood. If your aim is to attract only people who want unhealthy cheap foods it is extremely convenient!

Whether you like it or not (haven't been to one in years FYI) $tarbuck$ is a highly recognized and respected brand and people who only pass through driving from Oak Park or the Western suburbs or reverse may have been inclined to stop and sip. That would have encouraged them to explore places new to them to get tacos, burritos, etc. and check out the few other stores that are in the area. Some places in our community have gone out of business.

An intelligent economic development plan for a community should encourage such development. It can strengthen the existing local businesses and attract new ones. Walk-by traffic and a steady stream of new customers brings possibility of greater success to local businesses. If local businesses aren't able to offer jobs and aren't successful then they aren't building wealth in the community and the community suffers from less investment and less jobs.

I'll take a Caramel Macchiato anytime over a desolate bleak strip of empty lots, derelict cars stored several lots wide with graffiti all over them and piles of tires and dead vehicle parts & refuse, and dilapidated or vacant or mystery storefronts.

On Tuesday, January 15, Duffy, woke up unable to walk and in horrible pain. We rushed him to the vet who sent him to a specialist immediately. The specialist ordered an MRI which revealed one ruptured disc and two compromised discs. Because Duffy is still young and has so much heart and love in him, putting him down is not an option. He’s a dearly beloved member of the family. He was rushed into surgery that night.

Now we are drowning in medical bills of over $8,000. He will be re-learning to walk for the next few weeks and will require therapeutic rehab, which will add to the bills. So we are hoping there are some dog lovers out there who will contribute to our fund-raising efforts and help Duffy heal. I know so many people are trying to raise money these days and people have to make choices. But every little bit helps, so If you are able to contribute, thank you.

Here's the link to our fundraising page:

The picture is of Duffy yesterday, the day after surgery. He's pretty sedated. We're bringing him home tonight, and I'm sure he'll be happy to be home. Now the long process of healing and rehab begins.

future alderman: last Tuesday he woke up and was having trouble walking. Within a couple of hours, his back legs didn't work at all. The tests showed that he has a degenerative disc condition, and that one disc was totally ruptured and two others were compromised. The surgeon repaired the compromised discs. Not completely sure what they do about the ruptured one, but the prognosis is that he's got more good years left. But there was no clue before last Tuesday.

Thanks so much for your help, folks.

If they put furring strips on top wouldn't that break the seal/channel? Sorry for all the questions - I've seen this before but not in a finished basement. Thanks for reading!

The foundation is a bit of an architectural forensics case down there; original part of the house was a cottage built ~1887, with a second story added maybe late 1940s. Then at some point more recently someone dug out the basement. The top part of the foundation (which is covered) is concrete block, then hand-formed concrete below that (probably added with the 2nd floor addition), then finally the original 1887 brick. We replaced the first and second floor structures with engineered trusses (yes, it was a major project). The first floor rests on a bonded beam made of concrete block (you can see that running at the top in the picture); the second floor rests right on top of the original masonry (with a new sill).

There was already a wall in front, and yes the basement is finished. We actually had very little dig out; the "3 part" foundation was actually in remarkable shape, so we just had to take up the old slab and dig a small channel around the basement for the drain tiles. From there it was just gravel and a new slab!

The project was a major reno, but what was done w/ waterproofing could have been done without much disruption regardless, assuming the basement was unfinished!

Generally, it is the landlord's responsibility to fix it but can fix it and charge you if it can be proven that you broke it (and the landlord even wants to bother with reimbursement). (I would venture to guess your lease doesn't obligate you to fix such things, especially in an owner occupied.)

Your obligation is to advise your landlord. Email if you have it or call and follow up with a letter. However you do it, let your landlord know ASAP that there's damage so s/he can address it.

Unless it's an emergency situation, I would advocate against doing any handyman fixes yourself. You may cause additional damage or even injury. Let the landlord know so s/he has the chance to fix it or hire someone who can.

"thank god." story about dying dad in hospital, tank on e, needs gas, let me take your number and i'll pay you back. blah blah blah. i swiped my card for her on the pump and left. i knew it was probably a scam. thought, if she just charges the 30 bucks she really needs to get somewhere, it's legit. if she fills it up to 60, it's a scam. well, charge card showed 59 bucks. tonight, day after new years day, another woman (different, yet could have been the first one's mom- both were equally frantic and articulate...i admire their rehearsal skills if nothing else)in a suv waves me over (i'm on foot this time, but same gas station at calf and armitage.) "do you speak english -- thank god." same EXACT script. her mother's in northwestern, card is over-extended, blah blah blah. i guess word got around that it worked, so the scammers are working it. so adjust your need to respond (if any) accordingly. (by the way, i gave the second scammer the loose bills in my purse. it's a REALLY cold day, and she took the time to give me an education. that's always appreciated.)

  • If you were to tell the collection agencies/lawyers that this is your number now & to remove you from their call list that usually works. I had a similar situation with a phone number.

  • I keep a VoIP “land line” for unwanted calls. I never answer it unless it’s a known number in the caller ID. Well worth the $10 a month for the Ooma line. This is also the number I use for my primary number with grocery store rewards cards, etc. since I’m sure they sell the info. The scammers can call all they want.

In looking up the address on the city of Chicago website's tax portal, I can't find the owner's mailing address to reach out to him - or even a pin number for the address (the message I get is, "No records have been found for this property location. Please try again."). I can't even verify the name I have is the accurate name of the land owner.

Has anyone run into a situation like this? Do you have suggestions for how I might touch base with the land owner? The land is NOT city owned, as verified by the Alderman's office. Thanks in advance for any help.

well, big, i have lived here, in the same location, for 40+ years.

when i came here logan blvd itself was peaceful (tho Kedzie blvd and Wrihgtwood w of the square were the badlands) - but people who walked even 1 block n or s of logan put their lives on the line because it was a shooting gallery with scumbanger corner boys peddling their poison on street corners and gang signs tagged on the fronts of buildings, and of course up and down the alleys.

with investment, the scum were driven further away (score one for gentrification!) ... but never out. they were always there. they are always there.

so sure, if there's no gunfire outside your front door don't worry about it, big. if armed robberies and armed assaults are not occurring on or around your block then h3ll - don't give it a second thought. and even if they are, big, you are free to ignore them, secure in the solitude of your own home.

the people who post here (and who should also be dialling 911) do not do so to boast. what an insult to them to suggest that is their motivation.

they post here and elsewhere as a Neighborhood Alert to let others know what is happening, where, when, and how often.

my point is that social media postings are not enough. this increasing level of gun violence on OUR streets requires us to take an activist approach to the problem. march. protest. make our voices heard. city hall and CPD HQ respond to that when it's on the 10 o'clock news.

and yes, it is increasing and it is spreading to parts of the community that have been peaceful for 30 years.

there are 2 ways to boil a lobster:

    1) drop a live one into a pot of boiling water. it will thrash around and make a fuss because it knows it is in jeopardy. this is the equivalent of moving to the area around 69th and Paxton or Roosevelt and Sacramento - two particularly lethal locations. from the moment you park there, you know you are in the wrong place if safety is of concern to you. i know this because i have worked those areas - in the middle of the night.

    2) but drop the lobster into a pot of cold water and turn up the heat - it gets cooked without ever knowing what happened. this is the equivalent of living in LS. this is the equivalent of thinking the situation isn't an imminent danger, whatever is going on will go away, and it's not on your doorstep so why should i worry.
so, big, if you want to stick your head in the sand, that's your choice to make.

but i love LS. i care dearly about my neighbors. i know, understand, and have studied crime patterns city-wide for decades. the street shootings in LS have increased over the past 12-18 months. moreso over the past 8 months - just as they have become more brazen. the most recent ones have nothing to do with us - they are warring scumbanger factions and we are just caught in the middle.

    it is a trend.

and since even a handgun bullet can travel through open space for up to a mile - perhaps 1/4 mile in a dense city environment - no one who ever HEARS gunfire should EVER feel safe. if you can HEAR a shot then it CAN reach you.

i want my neighbors to realize that and to start raising holy h3ll NOW before the water in this pot gets any warmer.

and if you don't like what i have to say, just mute me, because i will not stop saying it until people wake up.

1900 blk Mozart

9:30 pm, about 5-6 shots fired, then police activity. Anyone know what’s up?

  • I live on Mozart and heard a woman at the end of the block speaking with the cops. She said they looked outside after hearing the shots and saw 4 people running down Mozart towards Armitage. I think she was also describing a dark sedan driving by but didn't say it was speeding away or anything. Best bet, at this point, seems to be a gang-related shooting.

Peoples Gas Pricing | Survey

Hey Loganites-

I get a monthly email comparing my gas usage with similar homes to ours. Apparently, we are super inefficient compared to homes of similar size. We live in a north facing, late 19th-century brick cottage home with radiate heat. Most of the home is original, as there is no real insulation between the brick and the original plaster. Windows are fairly new and our house is around 1900 square feet. Our December bill came in around $270.

What are you gas bills? Thanks!

you can rent a infrared thermometer with a screen that will show you all the 'cold spots' in your house. Its pretty cool! It becomes very clear where your problems are.

  • I pay to heat 3 residential units (don't ask why) and I am always surprised when I get those usage letters telling me how well (or not) I am doing compared to my neighbors. According to those, I must leave the front door open on one unit and hardly heat the others!!! Neither of which is true so I am also curious as to how they make their comparisons...by the way, I keep my house at 68 in the day and 60 at night.

Chi tech I agree with you. The city has money to throw at medians down the middle of the streets that cause tens of thousands to install and then millions to maintain. These are tax dollars that could go to helping these folks. Mute you too have a great point. Why should anyone walking in the evening, commuters walking to the train have to endure the garbage, the stench, accidentally walking past one while he is urinating? This isn't right either. Many are addicts and that's not okay. They got kicked out of their parents house, friends house, relatives house and now this is the "rock bottom" so does that mean we all need to embrace it?! What about those that are getting help like my son who could have been in this situation. He did 30 days twice at Rosecrans and has been clean for 4 years. The mentally ill I could see having the most compassion for. As for all of the rest no because there are places to get help. I've even given the info on this site and I bet it was never even tapped into. In the meantime I'll keep giving to the ones that I know won't ever be able to get a job because they're so old and so battered that no one would even consider them. As for the young ones with the tats and the ones that are drunk or high throwing their beer cans and bottles on the ground all while begging for more money, they get nothin' including my sympathy.
