2 hispanic males with gun

Today at around 630am at Belmont and Kimball I witnessed 2 shirtless hispanic males walking south on Kimball and one of them was trying to hide a gun in front of his pants. I called 911 to report them. Hopefully police responded right away and took these 2 punks off the street.

quick answer on vehicle carry....In Illinois at least, and what I prefer.

I know a lot of gun owners who never realized that before the FCCA, lawful possession in a vehicle for FOID card holders extended to the center console after a favorable ruling People (of Illinois) vs Diggins. I personally do not like to drive holstered. I prefer "Diggins" if you will, and have a provision to orient my firearm in my truck in a "safe and efficient manner" and do not use my center console for anything else. Transitioning between center console to holster can be made "mostly concealed". I am usually one who doesn't mind "duty to inform" but that's me. I don't usually offer law enforcement occasions to stop me anyway, but I have informed (where I was not required to) in Missouri, which was met with appreciation and "professional courtesy"

for whatever its worth, I like range355, but leave most of my brass on my own rural property.

Cats Outside?

What is the policy on housecats being allowed loose outdoors? I frequently see one leaving an apartment near my house and it has been “aggressive-defensive” to my dog. Tonight was the most concerning because it sliced at my dogs face unexpectedly from underneath a car.

I dont know exactly know which apartment it comes from and dont plan to go knocking on doors asking who's cat it is. Im just curious if there is a cat “leash law” and who enforces it.

  • Local Yocal Logan Square resident since 2000

I read about the wild cats (mountain lions) that once roamed the area freely, however due to humans moving into the now USA including Chicago. The local governments paid a bounty for each kill until they were gone. I know it's not helpful but wanted to provide a different perspective that maybe humans are far more dangerous than a house cat quietly and happily roaming outside with their caretaker's consent.

  • Humans certainly have the potential to be much more dangerous. That's why there is a very complex set of laws governing them with associated punishments.

Housecats aren't nearly as dangerous but can be a nuisance or hurt other pets that are being kept on leashes as per the law. Hence...

If a housecat is out unattended and slices my large, extremely friendly dog in the face, and he retaliates, causing significant harm...who is responsible, and for what?

Diagonal white lines on side of road? Am I allowed to park here?

Please see the attached picture. I don't think i've ever seen these road markings in the city before. What do these diagonal white lines mean? There were a few separated ones near the curb (this is the closest space to the intersection) I did not see any tow zone signs or yellow marked curb or anything else to indicate it is not a valid area for parking. I could not really find any information about these markings except for that they are sometimes used near handicap parking, however I did not see any handicap parking signs on the street either. Anyone have any idea?

  • I think the painted line means something like "this is not the roadway."

If it's not the roadway (or public way or highway, etc.) then there's no right to put a vehicle on it.

I couldn't find a specific ordinance/statute/code to cite in case someone parked over such painted diagonal markings... but since the solid line nearest and along the street probably marks the "curb line," the violation would probably be for parking on a sidewalk or parkway or public property or something like that.

  • By the way, I don't see any statutes in the Chicago municipal code that could be violated because of curb paint... or any where you could use "lack of curb paint" as a defense.

Unlike other areas of the country, curb paint doesn't seem to mean anything here... with regards to city parking violations, anyway.

It gives me pause every time I hear the cavilier attitude of some gun owners, especially Conceal and Carry permit holders. We live in a society where, pretty much, police departments do a good job in keeping us safe. I think a psychological exam along with a more rigorous training program should be required. Any rational person could see that not tracking shootings involving Conceal and Carry permit owners is not good public policy. It is just leaving the door open for some future tragedies waiting to happen.

Hello,

It deeply saddens to me to notify everyone that on Sunday June 17 a number of swastika, white nationalist, anti refugee, and generally hateful stickers with razor blades hidden underneath were found at and around Kilbourn Park.

Majority of these were removed by community members and myself in the presence of police officers. Over TEN razor blades were located under the stickers, so that should anyone attempt to remove these stickers, the potential for harm was present. These were within the playground perimeter as well.

Police have asked that if more stickers of this nature are found to please call Area North headquarters at (312) 744-8263 with the location of the stickers and state that you are calling to report more stickers of a hateful nature to add to the already existing report from Kilbourn park on 6/17/18.

At this time they requested that they not be removed so that an officer may come evidence the sticker and potentially collect prints.

Currently, there are still stickers within the park that have not been removed and I intend to call the authorities today to inquire why they have not been taken down. Additionally, municipal stop signs at Kenneth and Roscoe still have stickers as well as a pedestrian yield sign at 3342 Kostner.

Thank you for your attention and awareness of this event.

So now I turn to EveryBlock. My main focus here is to get rid of the sofas. Will the city garbage people take these sofas away? If not, do i need to rent a truck to go dump these 2 sofas somewhere? If so, where can I go dump them?

One sofa is a 3 seater and another is a 2 seater.

ATM Skimmer scams run rampant - even at bank ATMs

Word to the wise: No matter where the card reader is located - banks, stores, gas station pumps - ALWAYS yank on it before inserting your cards.

This story is about Lakeview, but it could just as easily be about Logan Square or anywhere.

Another ATM Skimmer Found In Lakeview; At Least A Dozen Devices Recovered On North Side Since May 1
Chicago cops recovered another ATM skimming device in Lakeview on Sunday afternoon. It's the second data-sucking contraption found on cash machines in the area since May 29. At least a dozen ATM skimmers have been found on the North Side since May 1st, according to police data.

Some time back, I grabbed a bite at a cafe near Loyola's downtown campus and paid by cc. They still had the old carbons and when I asked for mine, the server said they were already in the trash. Two weeks later, I get the statement and there's just of $400 worth in two large purchases I didn't make (@Walgreen's and Sportmart). Fortunately, the cc was with my primary bank which I visited directly and they removed the charges without any fuss; didn't hurt that they could see by my account history that I'd NEVER made a cc purchase at either retailer.

  • nimblewitted busy grandma

I'm not really sure if candy is the best go to for children as a motivator. We have a Girl Scout troop and occasionally we need donations for various events; because most of our girls are low income, so we assign the task of recruiting and seeking out donations. Various retailers would be glad to donate items, gift cards, trinkets, and of course treats. You or someone affiliated with the school would have to physically go out and hunt donations up. Just an idea; but it is do-able.

  • nimblewitted busy grandma

We shouldn't judge so quickly. We are all just trying to do our best, and most of us in this community know how difficult it can be to motivate children when they see so many negative images daily. I believe that children feel hopeless and fatalistic in this community, especially when they hear shootings down the street, see people being assulted on the street, not to mention the constant warnings children receive about strangers; because there are an abundance of perverts and deviants in every community.

Odd event at School and Avers

Odd event near the park on School Street. Walking by CVS I see first a battalion chief, then a deputy district chief go the wrong way up the street and stop by the park. See an engine standing there, but no bystanders, no sign of EMS. A little further up the block there is one CPD SUV. It's surrounded by firefighters but only two or three cops. No one in it. FF completing paperwork on the hood of the SUV. All personnel present, both police and fire, are very quiet. No one in the neighborhood paying any attention to them, no distraught bystanders, etc. Never saw or heard any follow up response, such as ambulance.

On the contrary, the bicyclist in this example, Bart, did not appear to follow the rules and could have been seriously hurt as a result of his actions. Bart appears to be grossly misguided and misinformed about how to properly ride his bicycle.

Here is the short version: Minor, drunk, stolen car. It was around 4:30pm and I was watching TV when I heard this loud BOOOOM. I seriously thought the house next door blew up. So I ran outside and saw the car in the yard. Two girls jumped out of the car and ran. Then one of them came back to get the keys. I tried to call the cops, get a picture of them and not loose my calm. Cops showed up, interviewed everyone (at this point the entire neighborhood is on my corner). Then another neighbor showed up and was like " I saw them walking in the alley". So the cops looked at me and were like "you are coming with us to identify them....". So I experienced my first chase. In a police car. Nope, this was never on my bucket list. We finally caught the driver in an alley 3 streets over. By that time 6 cop cars showed up for back up. She was a minor and drunk. All this time I tried to get ahold of my landlords but neither of them answered their phone. Anyhow, the landlord came home right when the tow truck showed up (6pm).

Good thing no one was in the yard or on the sidewalk. This could have ended VERY bad

  • Looked and sounds like a episode of 'Chicago PD"...wow....

(The key thing is the surprise...esp since it was stolen...too much drama for a hot day..but thanks for sharing...)

Any recommendations for tree service?

The city recently cut down the ash tree in front of our house because of ash borer infestation. The tree still looked healthy but I’m no arborist.

Can anyone recommend a tree service to treat our two remaining ash trees?

I spoke with the Bureau of Forestry and was assured that they would not remove these trees if they were recently treated.

  • If the trees are on the parkway - the city does treat them - but it seems it does not help - the city tries to keep them up as long as they are not dangerous....sooner or later they take them down - and replace them later in the year......

Best place to sell appliances,etc?

We've recently (almost!) completed a reno and have a few things to sell that are in good shape/not used (coin op W/D, pedestal sink, light fixture, etc) that seem like things a landlord or builder would be interested in. Is Craigslist still the best place for this type of thing? I have tried the 'marketplace' on Facebook somewhat recently too and didn't have any luck. Are there better apps or sites? I've heard a lot of them people just try to get you down to giving it to them for free on the apps... Thanks!

Is it legal for a scooter with an out of state plate to park on a permit only street?

I have a friend visiting who will be bringing a scooter here. i know you can park scooters on permit only streets without a zone sticker with an IL plate, but does the same apply to out of state plates?

Thanks!

  • You can only park a scoot in permit parking if you have a city of Chicago patking tag. It's a little circle that you put on license plate. City clerk sells them $40 I think

  • The "little circle" is the equivalent of the city sticker on the windshield of a car. It has nothing to do with parking. Motorcycles are exempt from zoned parking restrictions.

  • I heard them and saw them overhead, roughly circling around Milwaukee/Pulaski and probably on the other side of the freeway along Pulaski. Seemed like another helicopter was further north - maybe as far as Wilson? Spotlights used along Pulaski near Cornelia. Happened roughly 8:30 to 9:30 Thursday night. Didn't go outdoors, so can't comment on police activity on the ground. The helicopter closest to Pulaski/Cornelia flew very low.

Too bad...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/soccer/ct-world-cup-2026-20180613-story.html

Too bad the city will overspend on tax incentives to attract companies but won't pay to bring some worldwide focus...

U.S., Mexico and Canada win joint bid for 2026 World Cup; Chicago won't be a host site
The World Cup is returning to the United States, and this time, Mexico and Canada are along for the wild ride. Chicago, however, will not be among the host cities. A North American joint bid won the rights Wednesday to host the 2026 edition of the celebrated soccer tournament, defeating Morocco and bouncing back from an unfathomable U.S.
    http://www.chicagotribune.com
  • That is true in hosting an entire event...hosting a game or two wouldn't have nearly the same scale of issues.

  • That is also more true when you have to create infrastructure. Chicago would not be creating any transportation or venue infrastructure. If anything it might speed along some backlogged transportation projects.

Sure it'd be overcrowded for a week or so...but I think it'd be worth the visibility and potential investment.

House cleaning help !

Anyone have a cleaning person...who isn't afraid of, and is careful with animals in the home. I really need some heavy work done. Scrubbing floors etc... I prefer a person, to a service....but would do a service if I have to...thank you

  • Not to direct you away from Normas but I use thumbtack.com for these types of projects. You describe the job and then you get a bunch of bids. Really convenient.

  • Are you looking for a regular person or just a one-time?

Looking semi regular handyman

I own a 3 flat in Logan Square and 2nd floor tenant wants deadbolt installed and french doors repaired (extent of damage is unknown).

I would like to find someone nearby who I could rely on for continuing, though infrequent, service.

I have a PARROT at my bird feeder...

Not a parakeet, but a green parrot that is 12" long. I tried to take a picture but everything is green and it let me know that it wasn't interested. I'll figure out better food for it..

  • DianeW just nosey

Oooh, I'm so glad it's still around, and thank you so much, Kitty hop, for trying to help.

Have you tried regular old pet bird seed? Like unsalted sunflower seeds and unsalted safflower seeds? The bird might recognize that as food more so than fruit, In case it hasn't been exposed to a varied diet of fruit and veggies in it's previous home.

  • On my way to get some....

Does anyone have a speed heater/silent paint remover they'd be willing to rent?

We're removing tons of paint from our new/old two-flat, and are interested in trying an infrared paint removal system. The reviews seem mixed, so we'd love to try it out before making the purchase. Would anyone in the area have one they'd be willing to rent out for a day or two?

Thanks!

  • How did the speedheater work? Any chance you'd be willing to rent it out? We just bought a bungalow and have quite a bit of paint removal ahead of us and are trying to find the best approach - I found this post while searching to find a local source to rent.

    Thanks!

Honda Wheels Stolen

Got my wheels stolen Saturday night (06/09) right behand my house on logan blvd. My 2018 Accord was parked in the alley right behind my house on Logan Boulevard.

Worst thing is that these jerks had to do it on a Saturday, when all dealerships are closed on Sunday, so it just has had to sit there all day yesterday!

It's one thing to be a thief, it's another to be just that inconsiderate!

Ooof, I saw the car propped up this weekend. Sorry this happened. It looks like the cameras point right at your spot. Any identifying footage?

What a terrible thing to happen! Which block of Logan? You could have had the car taken to a tire dealership, such as Firestone or NTB. They're open on Sundays. Make sure you get wheel locks!

Found Dog Chihuahua Mix Male, Blue Eyes

We found a dog who looks to be a Chihuahua Mix on June 6 near Diversey and Ridgeway. He is all white with a few tan spots and Blue Eyes, Weighs 11 lbs and not neutered. He had no collar and no chip. We have posted on Lost pets Illinois, Chicago Northside Lost & Found pets, Pawboost, posted posters around the neighborhood and reported him to the local police precincts. Posting on here just occurred to me today. We have not heard anything from anyone at all, were taking care of him but really hope to find his family, hes a really good boy, he deserves to be home with his family.

Thank you so much for taking him in and trying to find his owners. If no one comes forward and you are looking to find him a new home, you should contact Sheri Berliner of Petraits. She will photograph him and send him out to her elist of thousands, as well as post him on petfinder and Adopt a pet. Professional photos really make all the difference. I have used her services when adopting out many stray cats and dogs over the last 10 years. She has now started a nonprofit to continue her rescue work called, Friends of Petraits. Petraits.com

Vinyl Siding Repair needed

I have some siding peeling away from the side of my home. Any recommendations for siding repair?

  • bump

  • I tried last year to get someone to do repair work on my enclosed porches.. no one seemed interested in doing the job or if they did they wanted to charge a fortune. So I did some research watched some videos and ended up doing it myself...

    Good luck
