Welles Park Dog Park?

Thinking Welles Park needs a dog park or signs can't let your dog off leash and someone to ticket. Every morning on baseball diamonds and today we have a party of 5 dogs off leash with owners chatting. Was hoping to cut through park but will go around.

  • I couldn't agree more Cubs. My dog is always on a leash and I deal with this at Winnemac park regularly. Dogs off leash approach my dog as I'm walking him and if they run up to us, he feels threatened. (His eyesight is not great anymore). I would much prefer there were a fence around the unofficial dog park that's formed there so we all can enjoy the park.

  • The police don't always coordinate with the Park District management. This problem has to be addressed with the park supervisor. If you don't know who that is, go to the Chicago Park District website and look it up or click on CONTACT US on the home page and leave your complaint there.

Woman screaming

Yesterday around 1 am I could hear a woman screaming really loud ,she sounded really scared and it seemed like she got taken away in a car .
We live off of kedzie and George street
Has anyone else heard it?

  • Jen Baron JBaron

Well glad you called Police. That was probably a total shock to be awoken by that. I pray the woman is ok.

  • Thanks for calling..you never know...at least you heard what sounded like a car leaving and what direction...sometimes that is enough. Thanks for being involved!

Plumber Recommendations

I live in a 5 story 1920s condo building with 10 units. There are a total of 4 plumbing riser stacks (galvanized) in the building. We have these risers routed out every year. Our contractor is recommending we route the risers twice a year now.

I am looking for recommendations for reputable plumbers with experience in vintage buildings. We are interested in getting professional opinions on such topics as:

1. Should we even be routing the pipes given their age and potential frailty?
2. Is power flushing a better option to routing?
3. What is remaining useful life and potential approaches to replacement?

Thanks much for any and all suggestions!

  • I read your question to my husband. We live in a building family built in 1907. We also own apartment buildings that we are always trying to improve. He says, "Replace them. Bite the bullet and REPLACE them".

I live directly behind the BP gas station (I can see it from my kitchen window). At 11:30pm I heard about eight gun shots and in less than five minutes there were cops everywhere. My cousin who lives at Montrose and Troy may have seen the shooters running down her block/fleeing the scene. If anyone has info about what happened please let me know!

Forest Bathing (LM Duplication) is the first album by Hawk and a Hacksaw, the Albuquerque duo of Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost, in five years. Since releasing 2013's You Have Already Gone to the Other World -a project inspired by Soviet-era director Sergei Paradjanov's 1964 film Shadows for Forgotten Ancestors-they've become more efficient in adapting the eastern-European and particularly Roma sounds that have provided their key influences for more than a decade.

Vine maintenance

Hi neighbors, we have a vine-covered building that we're trying to maintain. We don't want to completely get rid of the vines, but we would like them to stay healthy. Can anyone recommend a service that would help with this? It's a 3 story building and the vines go to the top. At the very least I'd like them to be trimmed away from the windows (they are murder on the screens!) but I'm thinking we'll need professional help.

  • Vines are like ladders for ants to crawl in your unit

  • If you have a brick building, vines are the worst thing you could do. Vines eat away at the mortar and tuckpointing. Can completely ruin the masonry over time. Be prepared for the expense of re-tuckpointing if you continue to allow vines to grow on your building.

Sonic explorer Ryley Walker nails a sweet spot between precision and experimentation on Deafman Glance

Fri 5/18 and Sat 5/19, 8 PM, Hungry Brain, 2319 W. Belmont, $15

Sonic explorer Ryley Walker nails a sweet spot between precision and experimentation on Deafman Glance
Ryley Walker closes his new album Deafman Glance (Dead Oceans) with a tune that nails the existential turbulence that ripples through most of his songs: "Whenever I do my best, I will spoil with the rest," he sings, acknowledging a self-destructive impulse that bleeds into his affairs, romantic and otherwise.

Hi there Ellen. I share the same concerns as you when it comes to the loss of mom and pop stores in our neighborhood. I do want to point out that the cost of rent can actually be cheaper for retailers in a TOD than a building that requires more parking.

With a TOD, the developer has more rentable space than with a building with parking which does not have as much return on sq/ft. In turn they have less pressure to charge higher rents to make up the difference. I think Southport is losing mom and pop stores since national chains can pay more.

The street is a victim of it's own success.
