Attempted Break-In at Saywer and Belmont - Avondale

Earlier this week (we think Monday-Tuesday), someone attempted to break-in through our basement door. They were able to get past the first door, prying open the lock, but were not able to make it through the lock on the second door (pictured here).

They did break off the center part of the lock. Unfortunately, we didn't realize this happened until yesterday as we rarely go in and out of that door.

Strangely enough, on Wednesday night I was sitting in my car (not running, in park on the street) on a rather lengthy phone call and police came up to my car and asked what I was doing. Never seen them patrol this area before, wondering if anyone else has had break-ins and alerted CPD in the neighborhood.

Guy rings doorbell asking to speak about one of the politicians running.

Yesterday I had a gentleman ring my doorbell, ask for me by first name but said he is hoping for my vote? How would they get my name if the apt is under my gfs name? I didn't open the door but thought that was odd.

I am more or less confused, dont think he was malicious, but found it strange.

A woman was mugged at 3035 n Hoyne. The Criminal left her purse in a bathroom stall.

Some despicable, low life criminal stole a purse this afternoon. He then went into the public bathroom, dumped some of the contents into the toilet and floor. He left the purse in the stall. Probably stole the wallet with cash and cards. If he's not caught, hopefully karma catches up with him.

The victim got her purse back and thankfully keys were left in.

Completely fed up with criminals/thieves who target purses/backpacks to steal. Please be aware of suspicious behavior.

Thanks neighbors!

  • Description of mugger?

  • There was a Facebook post about this and my understanding is that it was not a mugging. The victim left her purse unattended by accident on a bench at Hamlin Park and it was stolen. She then found it with contents dumped in the toilet.

Chicago keyboardist Rob Clearfield forges a jazz-classical hybrid of weightless sophistication

Chicago keyboardist Rob Clearfield forges a jazz-classical hybrid of weightless sophistication
Keyboardist Rob Clearfield's ubiquity on Chicago's jazz scene says plenty about his talents and adaptability. He's a musician who can lend sophisticated harmonic support to any setting-I've especially admired his simpatico contributions to bassist Matt Ulery's Loom. While his ardor for fusion and prog rock-where he busts out his digital keyboards-leaves me cold, his touch on piano is another story.

Nearly 25 years after their debut, Low are still doing more with less

Wed 3/7, 8:30 PM, Constellation, 3111 N. Western, sold out, 18+

Nearly 25 years after their debut, Low are still doing more with less
The phrase "glacial pace" could have been invented solely to describe Low, a trio from Duluth, Minnesota, who specialize in slow-burning minimalism. It's the kind of aesthetic that would have grown old after a few years for most bands, but after nearly a quarter of a century together Low instead continue to expand their boundaries with songs that mix the fervor of gospel into spectral soundscapes.

Chicago Water Meter

Hey Everyone, we purchased our Single Family home a little less then a year ago & we do not have a water meter installed. Our current water bill is just under $500 (6 months) for 2 people. What is everyone's experience with this? Is it beneficial to get the meter installed?

  • Just piling on ... yes, definitely get a meter ... My 2-flat rate for metered water, sewer, and trash is about $75 every 2 months ... If I were SF it would be a little less b/c I pay a higher rate for multiple units for trash. One human per unit plus 2 dogs ;)

  • Victor Delivery driver working nights. Watching..

Something is definitely wrong. I administer a Condo building in Elmwood Park (which buys water from Chicago). For eight appartments with a family ea. we pay $800 every other month. That includes the boiler, common areas, laundry, etc.

Dibs are not only Unappreciated, but Also Illegal

Hey everyone, I know with the snow this year it's a real pain in the butt to dig your car out from the side of the road. But dibs are tacky, unhelpful, and make our beautiful neighborhood look like a dump. If everyone who dug out a spot left the spot, there would be a spot for everyone who needed one.

None of us own the streets in Chicago and none of us can claim ownership of a parking spot on these public ways. I don't even park on the street, but if I see dibs I unequivocally move them up onto the sidewalk in an unobtrusive area.

Be a good neighbor - don't place dibs.

This is a prime example of how to not do campaigning.

All Vicki ever does is to assume everyone shares her point of view so she tries to speak for everyone. Once that fails, she starts name calling and labelling, telling everyone that she’s right and everyone is wrong, that she wants to have intelligent conversations while everyone else is insensitive, that she’s a good citizen while everyone else is a troll, that her HPS lights are beautiful and everyone’s LEDs make the city look like Walmart parking lots and mosques. Once that fails, she resorts to personal attacks.

All quality traits for someone that is trying to get people to support their cause.

Ice Dam...water dripping into back rooms

Hello neighbors. Woke up to frozen interior rear stairs and some pretty bad leaks in the back rooms this morning. Looks like Ive got one helluvan ice dam. Anyone have a reputable company they can recommend to clear the ice today? Or any other recommendations? Trying to prevent thousands in water damage. Thanks for your help.

  • Do you have anyone that you would recommend to install the ice cables? I have a huge issue I'm a second-story roof gutter area and have since I moved in 5 years ago. I have an ice dam on the south side of my house and this year is three times larger than last year. I'm pretty sure that those ice cables would solve my problem!

  • It can be a bit complicated to install the melt cables as it requires power. The cables I am familiar with are plug-in, so getting a new wet-use electric line run to your roof or near your roof with an outdoor use waterproof box/pipe/connectors and GFCI outlet can be the...

It can be a bit complicated to install the melt cables as it requires power. The cables I am familiar with are plug-in, so getting a new wet-use electric line run to your roof or near your roof with an outdoor use waterproof box/pipe/connectors and GFCI outlet can be the main expense.

As far as operation is concerned, they sell accompanying plug-in thermostats for $17 that will allow power to your melt cable based on the outdoor temperature hitting a certain reading. Personally I think this is a waste of energy as then the cable will be on when it is cold and not snowy as well as when there is snow.

I like them on a switch in the basement that I control. Or on a multi-level structure you can have the power line run somewhere under the back porch.

I'm not a fan of Home Depot due to their policy or frequent decision of re-stocking returns that customers have brought back as broken or missing parts, but there is a video on ice melt cable installation there. I hate it when I have to go back because I was sold some broken or incomplete garbage. I've had plenty of good experience at HD, also but they simply and easily could do better. Another beef is if there is one certain thing I need there is a shelf label there, the wrong thing is in that spot, and there are 28-49 of each item next to it and zero of the item I need.

Here is the product and video link:

For her latest work, S tück 1998/Anchor 2018, she was inspired by the moments of silence in Manfred Werder's 4000-page score S tück 1998, a piece containing 160,000 12-second units of time with six seconds of music and six seconds of silence in each.

Scandinavia's powerful Atomic settle into life with drummer Hans Hulbækmo and find new energy
On last year's Six Easy Pieces (Odin), the long-running Scandinavian freebop quintet Atomic truly settled into life with drummer Hans Hulbækmo, who replaced founding percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love in 2014. Anyone else have a gas outage around the Sacramento / Elston block?

Apparently there's a gas outage in the neighborhood from what a PeoplesGas person told me.

  • Yeah, I saw a bunch of ComEd trucks and crews on Belmont between Troy and Sacramento last night around 6, looks like they were about to start digging up the street too.

  • I'm on Sacramento approximately at Addison and did not have any gas outage.
