Missing Cat

Our cat Shorts went missing on 6/19/18. He is a very nervous cat, and does not have a collar. We rescued him 4 years ago. I am not sure how he got out, if you see him please let me know. Thank you so much!

  • Crystal Renée Drake Art Therapist

Thank you for the support! It’s very encouraging! Which is very needed!

I saw him in the alley last night off of LAWNDALE between EDDY & CORNELIA

I talked to some more neighbors and hung up some new signs.

I have a trap outside with sardines and tuna in oil with some clothes that smell like is, and a cat toy he likes.

    He’s so close to home!
If you see him please call or message me- he runs away when I call him.

    312.428.1300

  • glad he is around - change the food so it does not get to the point that it will get him or another cat sick - keep up the good work - -

    - make flyers with his picture and your contact info and hang them all over
    - look at night when it’s dark and quiet, alleys are usually where I see cats
    - keep the litter box outside, apparently they can smell it from far away
-put out food and water and something that smells like you and maybe a toy they liked
    - they usually don’t go far, ask your neighbors if they’ve seen them
    - post on Facebook groups-there is a group for Avondale, Craig’s List, etc. there is an app called Next Door that is helpful
    - Treehouse cat rescue will let you borrow a trap for free! And they’ll give you support and advice for finding your cat! They are really nice.
    - I walk around at night, I saw my cat last night I’m the alley by our house but he ran away and hid really good when I went to him. If your cat is nervous it’s hard- but don’t give up!
I hope you find your cat!
    I’ll be on the lookout!

Roof Sealing Recommendation

Hi neighbors - I'm looking to seal the roof of my four-story condo building and wondering if anyone has had a good experience with any particular company? Also, I'd love to know general cost for sealing - I'm looking to have approx. 1,500 SF of roof sealed. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!!

    BTW - Juan, don't misunderstand.

I do think that MOST people, myself included, would do the same as you described in your original post. That's not my issue.

My main issue is - putting aside all other arguments RE constitutionality, natural rights, etc. - is how some people manage to fixate on the firearm and do not direct an equivalent degree of ire at the person misusing that firearm.

No, it's 100% true. If you have a millennium to spare do a search on EB on the topic.

If 1 out of 1,000 posts or responses were about the attacker/killer then I will give you one of my excellent cigars.

I believe the crux of that mindset is that the anti-gunners aren't disclosing that what they hate more than the guns, is the killing. What they really want is to stop the killing. There are uncounted numbers of anti-gunners who are simply putative pacifists in that regard.

After eons of trying they have not been able to achieve that. Most of them would have to know that this just can't ever happen. The earth won't exist long enough to see a substantial change in human nature so as to make that time of tranquility possible.

So, unable to get what they want by asking people to be nicer to each other they turn their attention to the instrumentality of their displeasure ... the weapon used.

But as I've said before, what, 350,000,000 firearms? Billions of rounds of ammunition.

If anti-gunners really do want to stop the shootings then they have to demand that the shooters - the individuals - doing the shooting be stopped and judicially processed.

And their demands need to be louder than their "anti-thing" crusade.

In the meantime, the anti-thing argument is just so played out folks. C'mon ... let's go after something that we CAN achieve. Criminal justice.

Stopping criminal individuals. Can we not agree that this should be our No. 1 priority?

  • Juan, don't unsubscribe just yet. With an open mind, read Gil's post. He is being the voice of reason. He is sincerely appealing for to you to think this through. The problem of "gun violence" and gun crime will not be resolved through EB gun control debates. What Gil has to say makes perfectly good sense if only you are willing to be receptive to his message.

Here is the lost cat "to do" list. Also, is he chipped? If so, it will be back to the shelter you got him from. One of your first calls should be to them.

    1. put his litterbox outside along with something else he sleeps on or smells like you.
    2. make photo posters and put them in neighbors' doors asking them to check their garages or other places he could be closed in. post on poles around your neighborhood; 3. call the closest vets and let them know he is missing and see if they have any reports; chips sometimes malfunction.
    4. monitor animal control and visit in person;
    5. list on craigslist lost and found, lost cats Illinois, etc.
    5. go out at dusk with a high powered flashlight and call and look for the reflection of the cat's eyes (he has probably not gone too far); call near closed garage doors and listen for a response.
6.. get up in the middle of the night, (2-3) when it is very quiet and open your front and back doors and call him.
    7. if cat freaks out being outside, borrow or rent a trap from one of the shelters and bait it with his favorite food, cover with blanked and leave on your property but away from house.
    8. update us here with what works or doesn't so we can help other people.

Ginger/Orange Tabby escaped

My 2 year old ginger cat got out last night from Cornelia and Ridgeway. His name is Bernie. He is chipped and has a collar and tag but I think he will be too afraid to let anyone come near him to be able to read the rag. When he got out before I had trouble catching him as he was so nervous. Please let me know if you spot him so I can try looking where he was last seen.
Thanks!

  • I thought I should post a quick update on Bernie. He is still on the loose and proving a real challenge to capture. We think he may be on Eddy between Hamlin & Springfield. We have cameras set up after a few sightings and are trying to trap him but...

I thought I should post a quick update on Bernie. He is still on the loose and proving a real challenge to capture. We think he may be on Eddy between Hamlin & Springfield. We have cameras set up after a few sightings and are trying to trap him but there are several neighborhood cats who are getting caught instead and probably scaring Bernie away. The weather isn't helping either. We're still hopeful we can eventually get him home I just wanted to thank everyone who has called and been on the lookout for him.

  • Just keep trying to trap him. When I was trapping my cat I caught another cat, I released him and the second time the trap went off I had caught her. Also before I set the trap I put food and water out. She did come home to eat but as soon as she saw me ran. Good luck. Hope you find him soon.

So now I turn to EveryBlock. My main focus here is to get rid of the sofas. Will the city garbage people take these sofas away? If not, do i need to rent a truck to go dump these 2 sofas somewhere? If so, where can I go dump them?

One sofa is a 3 seater and another is a 2 seater.

Odd event at School and Avers

Odd event near the park on School Street. Walking by CVS I see first a battalion chief, then a deputy district chief go the wrong way up the street and stop by the park. See an engine standing there, but no bystanders, no sign of EMS. A little further up the block there is one CPD SUV. It's surrounded by firefighters but only two or three cops. No one in it. FF completing paperwork on the hood of the SUV. All personnel present, both police and fire, are very quiet. No one in the neighborhood paying any attention to them, no distraught bystanders, etc. Never saw or heard any follow up response, such as ambulance.

What CubsHawksBears said. I did a separate post on NextDoor urging people to please give a location when posting about events or crime. We don't need to know your exact address, just a general area, i.e. Belmont & Pulaski, 3600 block of N. St. Louis, etc.

  • I heard them and saw them overhead, roughly circling around Milwaukee/Pulaski and probably on the other side of the freeway along Pulaski. Seemed like another helicopter was further north - maybe as far as Wilson? Spotlights used along Pulaski near Cornelia. Happened roughly 8:30 to 9:30 Thursday night. Didn't go outdoors, so can't comment on police activity on the ground. The helicopter closest to Pulaski/Cornelia flew very low.

Fingerstyle guitar virtuoso Sarah Louise's new Deeper Woods is a love letter to the natural world
Fingerstyle guitar is a peculiar thing-it's a practice that often sucks its practitioners into a rabbit hole at the expense of other approaches. That's certainly not the case with Sarah Louise (née Sarah Louise Henson), the North Carolinian who made her mark with a couple of dazzling solo instrumental albums before demonstrating a larger sonic palette with her Appalachian-flavored folk duo House & Land.

This impacts people of all ages - parents with children, folks with bad knees, someone with a walker. A new bench-building initiative addresses this issue: From Here to There: Benches to...

Found Dog Chihuahua Mix Male, Blue Eyes

We found a dog who looks to be a Chihuahua Mix on June 6 near Diversey and Ridgeway. He is all white with a few tan spots and Blue Eyes, Weighs 11 lbs and not neutered. He had no collar and no chip. We have posted on Lost pets Illinois, Chicago Northside Lost & Found pets, Pawboost, posted posters around the neighborhood and reported him to the local police precincts. Posting on here just occurred to me today. We have not heard anything from anyone at all, were taking care of him but really hope to find his family, hes a really good boy, he deserves to be home with his family.

Thank you so much for taking him in and trying to find his owners. If no one comes forward and you are looking to find him a new home, you should contact Sheri Berliner of Petraits. She will photograph him and send him out to her elist of thousands, as well as post him on petfinder and Adopt a pet. Professional photos really make all the difference. I have used her services when adopting out many stray cats and dogs over the last 10 years. She has now started a nonprofit to continue her rescue work called, Friends of Petraits. Petraits.com

Break In Attempt

Someone tried to break into multiple first floor apartments last night for the building on School and Bell at northwest corner. The person used a planter, the water spicket, and a garbage can. Please be careful.

  • Hi. This is my building. Thank you for the post. Did you see this happening? What time was it?
    Thanks.
    Megan.

New restaurant?

Anyone know what’s going in to the former Dive Bar space on Halsted just south of Cornelia? Looks like they’re painting the outside in preparation for something.

  • Do we need another restaurant in the neighborhood.

  • I'm curious too, that was supposed to be the reopening of mEAT, but those signs have been down for over a year now. And, yes, we certainly need as much restaurant choice in this neighborhood as possilbe, anything is better than another closed building.

  • Li, if you think you know what the neighborhood needs, by all means....

go ahead and take the risk and open up your own business.

or, sit on the sidelines and take e-potshots at those who have the courage, conviction, stamina and work ethic to try.
