It’s shoveling season

That means all sidewalks in front of your building neighbors, including Amsje Emet.

Throwing salt on a sidewalk can be more dangerous than not salting at all. Salt will melt the snow and form a puddle which will freeze creating black ice. My last two wipeouts and close calls were from black ice. Salt is bad for dogs, the cement, and plants on both sides. Heavy salters usually have pock marked sidewalks that look terrible.

There is nothing wrong with a thin veneer of snow because it provides some friction. This is winter which means wearing a good set of boots. You can't expect to walk everywhere in heels ladies.

Is that man still trapping feral cats around the city?

It was on the news a few days ago http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/11/30/chicago-man-trapping-cats/ but I have not heard any updates.

I'm not sure how I feel about what he's doing. On one hand, I do not like the thought of half a million cats roaming the streets, and killing birds, and freezing to death.

But on the other hand, it is sad that they are going to an over crowded kill shelter.

Just curious to know if he is still at it?

Chicago Man Trapping Cats Hopes To Get City's Attention
CHICAGO (CBS) - A Chicago man, who has trapped more than 40 cats this week, was back at it on Thursday. Chicago's Animal Care and Control (CACC) asked Disgrace Felyer to stop, and even issued a warning to cat owners, or those who care for feral cat colonies, to keep their feline friends indoors.

The pest abatement program I was referring to had to do with pigeons and the barbed and sharp wires around CTA train stations and other areas. I didn't mean to at all suggest that birds of prey were being purposely used as part of any pest abatement program. My aim was simply to point out some problems with the overgeneralized outdoor cats vs birds argument.

I see it didn't take long for this to turn into a thread full of comments about the alleged benefits of having non-native predators like cats running wild in the city. The thread topic really is about this guy who is acting within the law to trap illegally free-roaming house cats (not ferals, even) and turning them in to CACC, which is supposed to (but clearly can't) accept them.

Perhaps we should also talk about the fallacy that no-kill shelters are an actual solution to those which euthanize animals which cannot be adopted out. Because that's another thing that this trapper is demonstrating.

Armed Car Jacking at George and Whipple

I parallel-parked my '08 Infiniti G35 on the east side of Whipple just before George. As I exited the car, two men in ski masks approached me, held a gun to my head and demanded my keys.

Happened at about 10:30PM. Stay safe folks. Happy Holidays.

Painter Reccomendations

I contacted Paintzen to get a quote and they said they would have to repaint everything, which I would rather not do.

I asked about painting the kitchen cabinets and they said it wouldn't be worth it, since the paint would come off due to the type of cabinets. They gave a little discount if I booked before March and with that discount the whole job is about half of what I was paying the other company. I'll let everyone know how it all turns out, but so far their office manager and dedicated project manager has been extremely helpful and professional.

Alderman Rosa downzone Milwaukee Ave from Kedzie to Central Park on 12/11 City Zoning Meeting

Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa put B2-1 downzone of over 100 Milwaukee Ave properties to single family home density on City Zoning Meeting next Monday 12/11. Predict Zoning Committee Chairman will defer from consideration. Rumor is affected property owner(s) may sue City for infringement of their property value and rights. B2-1 requires 2,500 sq ft of lot size per each new dwelling unit. Same as SFH zoning low density. All existing Milwaukee buildings are higher density as built, hence likelihood lawsuit against Rosa downzone would prevail and cost City/taxpayers big legal expense $.

Downzoning won't change or demolish the current buildings. But sale of the buildings for others or a current owner who wants to have a bigger building than zoned or already exists, would require alderman-approved new up-zoning, which will then trigger the city's Affordable Requirement Ordinance, requiring the new or current owners to build new affordable housing on-site, off-site or contribute to the ARO trust fund. downzoning, like up-zoning is perfectly legal and would likely be unsuccessfully challenged, or upheld as legal, in any legal suit.

Landlords and developers get zoning changes approval for their pet profit-making/gentrifying/ current tenant displacement plans all the time. Zoning changes, can, like Ald. Rosa, plans to do,are NOT just one-way legal tools of developers or current landlords. Progressive alderman who want to slow gentrification, slow luxury development, or increase affordable housing units or ARO trust fund dollars will use the downzoning then up-zoning tool they legally have and can use for the community's benefit and not just for developer's or current landlord's benefit.

Rosa downzone to dash -1 Single Family Home density of over 100 properties which are much higher density "as built" will definitely be susceptible to legal challenge. Multiple blocks in Lincoln Park were slightly downzoned in 1997, resulting in successful court challenge that redefined Aldermanic Prerogative as less than absolute power (Albert Hanna v City of Chicago). Milwaukee Ave here is close to public transit hub, is higher density business corridor compared to residential side streets, and is designated Pedestrian Street by City. This means properties are eligible for Transit Oriented Development density bonus within 1/2 mile (2,640 ft) from Logan Square Blue Line subway station. Rosa downzone is so draconian from "as built" density, and much higher zoning for several big parcels, that lawsuit challenge is likely to prevail. Even dumb lawyers in City Corporate Counsel office can grasp this and want to avoid huge legal fees taxpayers will pay. https://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-1528284.html
Original plan 10 yrs ago by previous Alderman Rey Colon with LSNA to convert Morris B Sachs / Payless Shoes building into Homeless SRO supportive housing using $20 million of Milwaukee/Fullerton TIF would not be possible under proposed B2-1 restrictive zoning. SROs / apartments less than 400 sf are not permitted. Community forced transparent city RFP TIF process that resulted in Hairpin Lofts affordable apartments and Arts Center, instead of LSNA / Colon "done deal" SRO.
Preserving character and buildings of a neighborhood is good thing. Preface of city zoning code mentions this. However, property owners have rights too. Zoning directly affects property value and what can be developed. Rosa mega downzone literally reaches into life savings of longtime property owners in arbitrary way that Courts are likely to conclude is illegal.

Rental properties in Lake View

Hi! My husband and I are moving from DC to Chicago in April and are looking to rent in before buying. We've never worked with a broker before but think that may be our best option, since we'll only have a day or two to visit and find a place.

Does anyone have suggestions on a broker/agent? Thanks!

Shots fired tonight

Anyone else hear shots fired around 8:30pm Sunday evening? Tough to say where for certain but near Ridgeway and George. I heard roughly 3 to 5 shots and confirmed with a neighbor before calling the police to alert them, but cannot find anything online many hours later. They said they were sending cars to the area to check it out; I hope no one was hurt.

I didn't hear anything last night, but I did call some in a couple Sunday's ago at Hamlin and George as my wife and I were sure we heard them and then I saw two guys running west down George right after. I did see an umarked drive by a couple minutes later, but never heard anything about it. Keep calling even if you're not certain.

Lost Cat

I live at the corner of Damen & Cornelia and am missing a female, spayed, short-haired tortie cat named Bitsy. Friendly to people, pretty chunky, doesn't have much of a voice when she meows. No identifying collar or other marks, I believe she had a microchip but I don't think I ever changed the registration from the shelter she was adopted from. Please let me know if you think you might have seen her!

  • So glad you found her, and thanks for letting us know. With the news that Trapper John is working the neighborhoods, it has to be scary for anyone who has cats who go out, or a cat who got out accidentally whose cat does not come home.

So glad she's home safe and sound.
