Calling on Chicago to provide 2200K PC AMBER LED Streetlight Test Block

Chicago is in the process, like many cities around the world, of replacing our streetlights with blue-rich white LED's (BRWL's). At 3000K these lights are at the absolute highest end of what the AMA has deemed safe. Blue spectrum light at night (270,000 streetlights in Chicago) will affect the health and circadian rhythms of people, plants and animals by creating 24 hours of daylight. IMHO, these lights are not only unsafe they are ugly and painful to look at, just like the new LED headlights...too bright and too glaring. They will make our city look like the frozen food aisle at Aldi, or at best, a Night Game. Chicago owes it to its tax payers, who will shell out $700 per light, to at least set up one test street with 2200K PC Amber LED's. If you would like to see such a test street, please let your Aldermen know. This is a four year roll out and changes can be made before it’s too late. If you would like to view or join our FB Group, please feel welcome. Thank you.

  • Happy to offer up my block as a test street. It already has the new lights, so would be great for asking the 48 homes there which they prefer. Also happy to offer my self as a test subject if they want to take any levels before and after the color temp change.

  • Seems very reasonable to me. My understanding is that there exists a ton evidence suggesting that blue-rich light is dangerous (AMA, Harvard, University of Haifa etc.) while the only draw back to warmer temps is a loss in color differentiation which is natural for night time. If the city gets the color temp wrong they could eventually have to do the switch out a second time. Virtually no risk in going warmer.

  • Thank you Mandacine and Donald. It seems as if people don't care how much damage, light trespass, glaring ugliness are coming to Chicago. They will once they realize how truly awful these lights are. Of course, if you love the blinding new LED headlights on new cars, you are going...

Thank you Mandacine and Donald. It seems as if people don't care how much damage, light trespass, glaring ugliness are coming to Chicago. They will once they realize how truly awful these lights are. Of course, if you love the blinding new LED headlights on new cars, you are going to LOVE the new blinding streetlights. And some say they feel safer...well then, please explain all the violent crime that takes place in daylight. These lights will do not do anything but make people 'feel' safer. In fact, they are so harmful to humans and the environment that their chances of being affected by the detrimental effect of 24 hours of daylight are much greater than being a victim of a crime. I hope there will be some people who will see this post and care about what is happening to our City.

Morning Commute Feeling More Crowded? Blue Line Sees Explosive Growth, Data Show

Six of the top 10 stations with the biggest increase in morning rush hour use are along the northern branch of the Blue Line, including all stations between Belmont and Damen.

This article has 2 other Chicago locations (Show)

...fruition. The plan, which surfaced in October, calls for a large mixed-use project at 2525 North Kedzie Boulevard, about 600 feet from the Logan Square L station. Unlike similar proposals, which typically start...

New residents are simply taking the train more, and developers are taking notice, including Enrico Plati, the developer behind The Savoy, a 138-unit “micro-apartment” project being built at 2342-48 North California Avenue.

Morning Commute Feeling More Crowded? Blue Line Sees Explosive Growth, Data Show
Published today at 9:12 a.m. It's not just you. Blue Line trains along the O'Hare branch are getting more crowded during morning rush hour. Uber and Lyft have chipped away at CTA ridership overall in the last few years, but morning rush hour use (between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m.)

  • This has been a long time coming. I know that CTA said that the blue line is at capacity in terms of power, but I have to imagine upgrading the power source on the blue line would be significantly cheaper than any of the other options.

An ear to the ground at the Third Coast International Audio Festival
I'd been hearing about the Third Coast International Audio Festival for as long as I'd been a journalist in Chicago. Reporters' circles in this city have been shrinking, so if you're from the newspaper world you're bound to cross paths with radio people.

"Future Stars"

Anyone see the Future Stars out in Lakeview asking for money? Future Stars is supposedly an organization that helps young adults go to college. You're asked to provide a check or cash of $20 and receive a Tribune subscription. I haven't been able to find anything on this scholarship online. Is it a scam? Has anyone else experienced this?

  • I signed up for this once, and never received anything. In the end I had to call in to the Tribune to ask if they knew anything about it - they didn't, and had no record of a subscription under my name. Not necessarily saying it's a scam, just that my experience was poor.

Oddly enough i find my elderly clients always have their walkways shoveled and salted. What a nice gesture victor. When i see posts looking for someone ill send them your way. I thought of this thread today as i walked a large elderly dog whos guardian fails to see its his dogs time. The dog slipped on the ice as he can barely walk on clear walkways. Then i remembered how i used to walk in lincoln park and see a blind woman everyday walking from clark to orchard and how upset i couldnt help her navigate as i was walking 2 large dogs myself but st hilary would not have their sidewalks shoveled or salted. Some peopl3 have a hard time walking without heels or snow or ice to navigate.

Thanks Mute! and I hope that elderly dog has the love and attention it deserves. Thanks for being a caring person! keep trucking babe

Is that man still trapping feral cats around the city?

It was on the news a few days ago http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/11/30/chicago-man-trapping-cats/ but I have not heard any updates.

I'm not sure how I feel about what he's doing. On one hand, I do not like the thought of half a million cats roaming the streets, and killing birds, and freezing to death.

But on the other hand, it is sad that they are going to an over crowded kill shelter.

Just curious to know if he is still at it?

Chicago Man Trapping Cats Hopes To Get City's Attention
CHICAGO (CBS) - A Chicago man, who has trapped more than 40 cats this week, was back at it on Thursday. Chicago's Animal Care and Control (CACC) asked Disgrace Felyer to stop, and even issued a warning to cat owners, or those who care for feral cat colonies, to keep their feline friends indoors.

The pest abatement program I was referring to had to do with pigeons and the barbed and sharp wires around CTA train stations and other areas. I didn't mean to at all suggest that birds of prey were being purposely used as part of any pest abatement program. My aim was simply to point out some problems with the overgeneralized outdoor cats vs birds argument.

These articles reference Bald Eagles being sighted in Chicago:

If the sightings were technically in Chicago suburbs, and not in metro Chicago itself, I apologize. I'm not familiar with the technical boundaries between city and suburbs.

I see it didn't take long for this to turn into a thread full of comments about the alleged benefits of having non-native predators like cats running wild in the city. The thread topic really is about this guy who is acting within the law to trap illegally free-roaming house cats (not ferals, even) and turning them in to CACC, which is supposed to (but clearly can't) accept them.

Perhaps we should also talk about the fallacy that no-kill shelters are an actual solution to those which euthanize animals which cannot be adopted out. Because that's another thing that this trapper is demonstrating.

Painter Reccomendations

I had my condo painted a few weeks and the painter did a horrible job. He didn’t patch holes, didn’t use dropcloths, and didn’t paint the ceilings (this is an abbreviated list of what went wrong). I contacted Paintzen to get a quote and they said they would have to repaint everything, which I would rather not do.

  • I decided to go with Chicago Painters, Inc (http://www.chicago-painters.com) and they're coming on Monday. They came out for a quote last Saturday and were great and didn't try to upset. I asked about painting the kitchen cabinets and they said it wouldn't be worth it, since the paint would come...

I decided to go with Chicago Painters, Inc (http://www.chicago-painters.com) and they're coming on Monday. They came out for a quote last Saturday and were great and didn't try to upset. I asked about painting the kitchen cabinets and they said it wouldn't be worth it, since the paint would come off due to the type of cabinets. They gave a little discount if I booked before March and with that discount the whole job is about half of what I was paying the other company. I'll let everyone know how it all turns out, but so far their office manager and dedicated project manager has been extremely helpful and professional.

  • Great! I haven’t seen you this happy in a while. We’re looking forward to your follow up message!

Rental properties in Lake View

Hi! My husband and I are moving from DC to Chicago in April and are looking to rent in before buying. We've never worked with a broker before but think that may be our best option, since we'll only have a day or two to visit and find a place.

Does anyone have suggestions on a broker/agent? Thanks!

Neighborly Litigation (Chadha v. NPES)

Many on this forum talk about litigating, be it for some unneighborly thing or other. Well, here is your chance to read the behind the scenes workings of the Chicago Way in its entirety (link below - get some popcorn and settle in) and VOTE.

This is the culmination of 7 years of attorney fees and a waste of our taxpayer-funded court's time/resources, in my opinion, of course.

Lost Cat

I live at the corner of Damen & Cornelia and am missing a female, spayed, short-haired tortie cat named Bitsy. Friendly to people, pretty chunky, doesn't have much of a voice when she meows. No identifying collar or other marks, I believe she had a microchip but I don't think I ever changed the registration from the shelter she was adopted from. Please let me know if you think you might have seen her!

  • So glad you found her, and thanks for letting us know. With the news that Trapper John is working the neighborhoods, it has to be scary for anyone who has cats who go out, or a cat who got out accidentally whose cat does not come home.

So glad she's home safe and sound.

  • Yay!! Happy she is safe and sound! Nothing breaks my heart more than learning about a lost pet.
