Wood statues stolen from Roscoe Village

Hello neighbors,

I had 3 painted wood carvings stolen from in front of my house near Cornelia and Damen in Roscoe Village last night. They were chained securely, but someone cut the chain or unscrewed the eye locking them. If anyone happened to see anything, or sees some wood carvings lying around somewhere, please contact me. They are about 3 feet, 4 feel, and 6.5 feet tall.

I have reported this to the police, but am posting just in case someone might have seen something suspicious. Like a pick up truck riding down the street with a totem pole. I have photos if anyone has questions.

Thank you,
bill carroll

Don't ask Stephen Colbert for directions to Schubas Tavern

Schubas opened nearly 30 years ago at the corner of Belmont and Southport avenues. Colbert said Koechner told him after that Schubas set that producer Robert Smigel was looking for him to join “The Dana Carvey Show,” a sketch TV show that aired briefly in 1996.

Don't ask Stephen Colbert for directions to Schubas Tavern
Stephen Colbert gave a shoutout to Schubas Tavern on Friday's episode of "The Late Show," but he misremembered the location of the Lakeview club as he recalled his days as a comedian struggling to find work in Chicago in the 1990s.

New restaurant?

Anyone know what’s going in to the former Dive Bar space on Halsted just south of Cornelia? Looks like they’re painting the outside in preparation for something.

  • Do we need another restaurant in the neighborhood.

  • I'm curious too, that was supposed to be the reopening of mEAT, but those signs have been down for over a year now. And, yes, we certainly need as much restaurant choice in this neighborhood as possilbe, anything is better than another closed building.

  • Li, if you think you know what the neighborhood needs, by all means....

go ahead and take the risk and open up your own business.

or, sit on the sidelines and take e-potshots at those who have the courage, conviction, stamina and work ethic to try.

Uncle Fun, the beloved Lakeview novelty shop, gets its own documentary
From 1990 to 2014, Ted Frankel owned and operated Uncle Fun, a Lakeview shop that sold novelty items and gag gifts. The mild-mannered Frankel could often be seen casually sporting a jester's cap or a wig composed of glow sticks, and his stock included such staples as bacon-flavored lip balm, glasses with googly eyes, hordes of rubber cockroaches, unicorn snow globes, and enough fake poop and vomit to fake a yearlong stomach bug.

'Burnham's Dream: The White City' shows it's hard to make a musical from dancing architects
Have you craved the opportunity to see a musical about dead Chicago architects? Did you always hope to catch Daniel Burnham and John Root doing a soft-shoe together? When staring, say, at the outside of the Auditorium building, have you thought of Louis Sullivan and wondered if, one day, you might see him warble a creepy ballad from the stage of the theater?
