Ald. Arena pledges to bring 50 CHA units to the ward
by BRIAN NADIG Alderman John Arena (45th) has pledged to bring 50 Chicago Housing Authority-sponsored apartments to the 45th Ward by the end of his term in the spring of 2019. Hello

These property lines drive a Chicago homeowner crazy. I told my neighbor I will be doing some tuckpointing work on the west side of my property (on their yard side) later this summer. My chimney protrudes out approx 4 inches on that side which also coincides with MY property line. My neighbor then goes ahead and plants veggie plants directly against my building with chicken wire fencing obstructing where tuckpointing is needed. The Alderman has indicated that I would need to get a R/E attorney and apply for a temporary easement order with the CofC to gain access. How ridiculous is this. All because of some plants on MY property line.
Anyone have any suggestions, please give me a holler. Thanks in advance!

  • Bob

    james white-

The neighbors think that is their property and that is why they put their plants there. They also put more plants against my garage on my property line when I clearly told them BEFOREHAND I will need that space to re-side the garage. I think they like to push their limits just to be difficult or they are just playing dumb with the situation. My best guess.
Do you think my plat survey in hand is sufficient enough to justify my position concerning this matter? Just curious. Thanks!

  • You should have a survey along with your property papers. That survey will give dimensions from your house to your property line.I would guess that the narrow strip of land next to your house where they planted is actually your property. I does not matter where the fence is .
A contractor will probably erect a scaffold to do the work. That can be done in such a way as to not disturb the plantings. Protection can be do so as to protect the plants from dust and debris.

Seeking Gay Friends in Jefferson Park and Portage Park!

Hello, Everyone!

I am a single GWM who moved to Jeff Park from Bucktown a few years back and am having a tough time finding any gay identity here. There must be gay men in Jeff and Portage Park tired of the craziness of the Boystown scene and desire true friendships here on the Northwest Side!

My friendship base kinda wained over the years and would love to establish something healthy and enduring. I'm 50, sincere, discrete, professionally employed and have a really warped, fun sense of humor.

So, let's get together and share great conversation, food and friendship! Life is too short not to!

Prohibition does not prevent people from pursuing the thrills and vices they wish to pursue. It only makes the pursuit thereof more dangerous and harmful to the users and those around them.

The only solution I can see for this problem is to bring it out into the open. Have the Aldermen, city, fire and police organize community supervised fireworks shows. Get it out of the back alleys, where debris showers on the yard and clogs the drains and lands in gutters full of dry tinder. Bring neighbors together to talk to one another, socialize, and use and enjoy fireworks as safely as we can. Teach safety and responsibility. Set up in the park, on the baseball field, and bring along a dumpster and have a cookout on the 5th with rakes, bags and trash pickers to clean up.

That way most of the activity can be contained and moderated, and the calls to 911 can better address those that still insist on polluting, disturbing the police, and creating hazards in our alleys.

  • Some people just cannot resist the thrill of setting off forbidden fireworks. It's like a little kid thing. If it becomes legal and controlled it may just lose its charm. However, the danger, the noise and the pollution will remain.

Auto repair

Folks: Tom and Jerry's Auto Repair? Anyone have any experience with them or any other reliable body shop in the area.

  • Tom & Jerry's doesn't patch rust? That may be true. I remember I took my car in and asked them about some rust on the back panel and they were honest about it. They didn't just patch and charge me. They said if they "fixed" it, it would just come back and happen again because that make/model/year was notorious for rusting in that area. I appreciate the honesty over just trying to get a sale.

Puppy guidance sought

I will be getting an 8 week old Goldendoodle soon. It has been 40 years since I have had a dog. Living alone, I am assuming I need to crate train from the beginning. Having said that, what are thoughts about the pup climbing on furniture and sleeping in my bed?

I know I am going to need help on the training end. What are your experiences with obedience training classes and/ or hiring a trainer to come to the house. And, how about selecting a vet?

Puppies do not have eight hour bladders. You need to get up during the night to successfully housebreak them. The crate is to contain them at night, during the day when they cannot be supervised, it is their safe space. You don't want them to view a crate as a bathroom and bedroom. They should view the crate as their den and safe space. Dogs don't use their den as a bathroom. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/dogs/tips/crate_training.html

    https://www.labradortraininghq.com/labrador-training/what-size-dog-crate-and-which-type/

If you have a yard this will make housebreaking much easier. It is much easier to get up during the night and take a dog out in the yard than it is to actually go for a walk.

The amount of exercise a dog requires varies by dog and breed. Each dog is an individual, so some may need more others require less. If you have a higher energy breed making sure they get enough exercise is key to avoiding behavior problems.

You will also want to puppy proof your yard and house.

  • Robsy, If you're seriously 'rethinking' your goldendoodle because the breed/its needs may not be a good for you, look past that $400 deposit if you can. The best fit you can get with your lifestyle, home, and expectations is more valuable; a good choice on a pup will last many...

TDawg54 and Chitowngal have both provided good info. I see TDawg54 mentioned Bichons. We know a Bichon that's such a complete hoot, everyone that meets it adores it. Will fetch with almost unending delight and is smart as a whip. The Bichon's size makes it easy to care for/vet, take along in the car, and pick-up if unsure about other/strange approaching dogs.

Squatters in Home on Melvina @ Higgins

It appears after the police removed the squatters from this house and padlocked the doors at 5128 N. Melvina at Higgins, the squatters have returned via the windows. The grass is knee high and garbage is strewn all over the property. Of course, I'm concerned about rats. A CTA bus stop shelter is right there. I would be scared that the waiting riders might see a rat or two.

Besides the CAPS 16th District contact and Alderman Arena, who else should I alert to get these ne're-do-wells removed?

Upscale senior housing at 6 Corners would not include on-site affordable units for low-income

Update: the project’s required nine affordable units would be built off-site, possibly at the Saint Cornelius convent in Jefferson Park. Those affordable units would be around $800 a month, but may not have the amenities of the planned upscale building at Six Corners, where rents would start at $4,400. Alderman Arena says he will push for extra affordable units for Six Corners in the large residential developments which could be coming to the Sears and Peoples Gas sites. http://nadignewspapers.com/2018/06/26/upscale-six-corners-project-would-not-include-on-site-affordable-units-for-low-income-seniors/

Reasonable rates and nice work. They've been busy doing kitchen/bath renos for over 15 years by word-of-mouth & add-on work alone (both worked at Century Tile & Carpet yrs ago). They're local to Portage Pk/Jeff Pk and are usually booked out a few weeks.

In case you haven't had the work done before, tile cutting is messy work that's done outside; you'll need a viable spot for that. Also, if you're keeping your current bathroom flooring, lay a fitted piece of low, tight-looped pile foam-backed carpet to protect your flooring -- it's cheap insurance that pays off.

I would recommended Prestige Kitchen and Bath and speak to the owner, Ron Smith. His number is 773.552.3717.
I have known him for many years and they do quality work. Tell him LuAnne recommended you.
