Bird mess from feeders

I have a neighbor who has hung not 1 but 2 bird feeders approx 1 foot from my property line. The mess in my yard and patio is not just bad but seriously bad (and unhealthy). I really don't care if they want to feed the birds but I asked them to move them more into their yard to prevent the mess in my yard...I told them that I am tired cleaning the mess in my yard and this mess is not only unhealthy but it has been attracting the rats and now pigeons (and they laughed at me).
Is there any sort of code that determines how close a neighbor can put anything near my property line?

Weebis: The reason you're seeing birds of prey is because they are attracted to the plentiful variety of birds in our area so anyone who has a bird feeder provides an instant smorgasbord for raptors. Original Poster: Unfortunately those who have feeders also attract IMO, the nuisance birds, house sparrows, starlings and grackles who make a mess and do more fighting amongst themselves (they have a specific hierarchy) and throwing around of seed than they do actual feeding. Sparrows are particularly skittish, but persistent little jerks. You may want to try mylar reflective pinwheels or the like to scare off birds. Balloons as you may know are very dangerous to birds and will cause serious injury if they become entangled in the string. I'm sorry you have uncooperative neighbors :-(. We feed birds in our yard, and although we certainly do wind up with the ubiquitous invasive species like English sparrows, we get better birds and no pigeons because we feed them better birdseed. Junk birdseed brings junk birds. I know you probably are not inclined because of their reaction to your request, but you could give them maybe a bag of safflower or black thistle (goldfinches are particularly drawn to the thistle; cardinals like the safflower), which will attract more interesting birds, and not interest the pigeons. If you have a fence or post nearby, you can get a spool of plastic thread, and tie several foot long lengths of the thread - Careyann, who mentioned sparrows being skittish is correct, and something about the light catching the lines of thread throws them off.

You could also try to point out to your neighbors that they should save their birdseed budget for other times in the year, birds really don't need us to feed them through the summer.
A plastic owl sometimes works, sometimes not, if the birds see that it is always in the same place and not moving, they may become confident enough to return. Still, it is worth a try!
I feel your pain for a totally different reasons - our neighbors on both sides know my husband is a birdwatcher, and also put up feeders, to be neighborly - but because they are using the lower quality mixed birdseed, we get a ton of sparrows hanging around their feeders, and a huge mess from the birds perching on our fence.

Hi, we are looking for recommendations for a company to get carpet quotes from. We will also need a new subfloor. I'm fine buying carpet separately or a company that will do everything from subfloor to carpet (including carpet sale). The room is about 350 square ft. and we will carpet stairs also.

One time I had to take my car in for a fender bender, they even asked me if I had work done from a previous accident (I had about a year prior). They said whoever the body shop was before, they did a terrible job and left a lot of debris and unfinished work. Anyway ... Tom & Jerry's cleaned it all up and fixed my car up nicely. I've been there a few times and they do great work. It's the only place I'll take my car now (I hope to not have to take it in for any repairs though, haha).

I decided to rent them with my husband, because we bought an old house, which required a great renovation, among other things, stairs. Sincerely? I was totally shocked when I saw the results of their work. I thought that the pictures on their website with the effect of "before and after" refurbishment were some lie, but really everything looked just like on the website. I regret that I did not take a picture of the stairs before they were renovated. I could share with you the effects of the Concrete Power company.
What's more, all employees of this company are so well trained. You can immediately see that they know what they are doing. Concrete Power really has to put in years of practice in training these people.
We wanted to go with my husband such a staircase, similar to one of the pictures in their gallery - the ones next to it. It was enough that we showed them a photo and they already knew what to do.
I think that the price is really good and affordable in relation to the services offered by Concrete Power. They use only the best materials to repair the stairs.
These stairs will be indestructible for years! Good job, Concrete P!

Is there a building code that specifies how far a canopy or awning can extend out from the side of the house? This awning is considered encroachment if it extends to my property line, correct?

  • paul in jefferson jefferson park resident

Call building department and ask about set backs for awnings and find out code first.

  • If he built it without a permit that is all you need to challenge it. Also any new structure needs to be 3 feet from the property line if they are made with wood or any other flammable materials. If he replaced an existing awning it may be grandfathered in. My guess is any awning that existed before probably wasn’t done without a permit anyway.

Building Codes

I have a neighbor who built and installed an awning constructed out of wood and plexiglass over his side door leading into the basement. It extends out all the way to my fence line and my entrance doors into my residence are adjacent. Needless to say I catch all the water and snow at my doors now. There has to be a code regulating how far an awning can extend out on the side of house...along with what materials are considered safe. Am I wrong?

  • Let the neighbor know that the rain and snow falls on your side - and ask him to add a rain gutter to the awning...... that may take care of the problem - -

If the snow falls on your side - that could cause a serious accident - talk it out with your neighbor....maybe you two can come to an agreement...good luck

Hi all. Starting to explore the potential to add living space to the basement. It is plumbed (awkwardly) for a powder room, and most of the space has a kiss over 7' in height from concrete to joist. I would like to do the work on the up and up, but installation of a sub-floor (even something ultra-thin) would encroach on that 7' clearance. My question to you all is: Has anyone attempted to get a variance on the ceiling height for a basement renovation project? Were you successful? Why or why not?
Demoing out the old slab (though thin), digging down and re-pouring is not really an option. Neither is lifting the house. Just not the budget for it. Yes, floor drains would have to be re-located, moisture infiltration prevented, insulation, electrical, . . . but all of that talk is moot unless there is precedent for a variance. If I can't get an answer here, I'll turn to an architect, but thought I'd see what the neighbors say first.

anyone?

  • The above code section regarding 7'-0" ceiling height, may only apply to existing legal units and useful for duplexing purposes, but may not apply to converting an existing space into a new stand alone legal dwelling unit.

  • new dwelling will require 7' 6", if you want a bathroom down there

10-story building planned for Six Corners

10-story building with senior housing and commercial space is planned for Six Corners. Six Corners Master Plan calls for four or five-story development on the site. Alderman Arena will host meeting on the proposal at 6:30 pm Thursday, June 21, at the Filament Theater, 4041 N Milwaukee. The complex would include 265 units, with a mix of independent living, assisted living and memory care options.

"A look at the latter case first. Near Norwood Park, GlenStar Properties wants to build a 299-unit apartment complex along the Kennedy Expressway, just east of O’Hare. As many as 30 of the units would be deemed affordable housing, which means rent for those units would be within reach for people making 60 percent or less of the neighborhood’s median income.

The location would be ideal — within walking distance of CTA bus routes, the Blue Line’s Cumberland station, and a Greyhound bus stop.

Up until recently, however, GlenStar’s proposal looked like a victim of aldermanic prerogative — an unwritten rule that gives aldermen veto power over projects within their wards.

The complex is proposed in the predominantly white 41st Ward, where Ald. Anthony Napolitano presides. Last fall at a city Zoning Committee hearing, Napolitano said he opposed the project because of concerns about the impact on traffic and local schools. In a lawsuit seeking to get the project approved, GlenStar says Napolitano failed to back up those assertions with data. GlenStar says the real reason for Napolitano’s opposition was the project’s inclusion of affordable housing.

The zoning committee deferred action on the project indefinitely, and the deadline for a vote on the project expired in January. However, GlenStar officials were recently told their proposal will be put on the agenda for the Zoning Committee’s meeting June 26."..."What do the GlenStar and Full Circle proposals share in common? They each offer affordable housing in a part of the city where the job market’s arrow is up and the demand for lower-wage earners is sure to grow. That’s something that should be enabled. Neighborhoods are at their healthiest when they strike a balance between growth and affordability. Arena gets that. Napolitano doesn’t."

  • OParker Native Chicagoan

Why do the developers and their supporters insist on wanting to make this and other projects about race or poverty when all many of us are asking is not to put in high density housing? Keep the buildings to 4 stories or less and include the 30 assisted housing units and I believe they would find a lot more support.

6/7/18 Letter to the Chicago Tribune Editor in response to the 6/6 Tribune Editorial:"Letter: Aldermen have too much control over housing in their wards
    June 7, 2018, 1:40 PM

The Chicago Tribune editorial “Affordable housing in the Far Northwest Side: A tale of two projects” urges affordable housing to be considered in the Far Northwest Side of Chicago. For over a century, Far Northwest Side communities have, by design, been residentially segregated. Even today, aldermanic prerogative, an informal practice with no grounding in law, has been manipulated in an unjust manner to exclude under-represented populations. The Far Northwest Side of Chicago needs local and citywide leadership to step up and ensure healthy, inclusive and affordable communities are designed for the future, especially in light of plans to expand O’Hare International Airport.

The O’Hare expansion is expected to generate 60,000 construction jobs and tens of thousands of permanent jobs in upcoming years. Airport workers will need affordable housing to eliminate hours of commute time. Lessening daily commute time improves quality of life for individuals and families, allowing more time to be spent with children, attend school, work out and become engaged community volunteers. Because of misuse of aldermanic prerogative, the GlenStar Properties project development, containing 299 units, including 30 units of affordable housing, has been in limbo for almost a year. Unless City Council zoning committee members take the high road for the greater good of the city and choose to ignore aldermanic prerogative, in a rare and almost unprecedented manner, the project will not be approved."

Aldermanic prerogative needs to be re-examined to ensure it is not used to promote segregation in the future.".."Monica Dillon, Chicago"

Curious re concrete slab in shared gangway

There are rules for capturing and routing stormwater from rooftops, but I'm curious and wonder if anyone knows of applicable rules/codes for new concrete installation/s?
Assume you have a sidewalk running alongside your structure and the owner of a neighboring structure installs a concrete slab on their side -- do they need a permit? and are they required to install a drainage system such as a trench and grate?
Replacing a huge patch of earth with solid concrete creates a stormwater runoff issue that could affect neighboring property if not contained/managed. Seems sensible there should be a drainage requirement. Anyone know?

  • Abc123 13 yr Old Irv resident, please pick up trash

A very quick summary, you cannot dispense roof or lot drainage water to your neighbor's property or create a nuisance. Its prohibited and I've seen the City respond quickly to such claims. Chicago is a code/no-code/enforce/that'll be ok/hey whatcha got minefield, dress appropriately.

Amid Affordable Housing Dispute, Conservatives Seek a Home in Chicago - ProPublica
When news broke last week that a proposed affordable housing development on Chicago's Northwest Side had likely been put on hold, Ammie Kessem, a Republican candidate for state representative, vowed on Facebook that it wasn't the end of the story. Democrats, Kessem wrote, would pay for pushing the plan - including 45th Ward Ald.

Ald. Arena pledges to bring 50 CHA units to the ward
by BRIAN NADIG Alderman John Arena (45th) has pledged to bring 50 Chicago Housing Authority-sponsored apartments to the 45th Ward by the end of his term in the spring of 2019. Arena and six other aldermen recently signed the pledge as part of an effort that they say will help end segregation on the North and Northwest Side.

Why is Rham a fence sitter? Because he is listening to the neighborhood voters. Unlike arena...he may actually get re-elected by doing such a crazy thing.

  • I hope Rahm never holds office here, or anywhere else, ever again.

Free Sod

I have a bunch of sod I cut out this weekend stacked up right inside the fence next to my garbage cans in the alley behind the 4400 block of Narragansett. I have a bunch of sod I cut out this weekend stacked up right inside the fence next to my garbage cans in the alley behind the 4400 block of Narragansett. There are some really good rolls, and a ton of smaller pieces, that can be used to patch big or small areas. Note that a lot of the good rolls are towards the bottom, so if you dig a little, you'll get to most of the good rolls. I am just trying to get rid of it without having to bag it for the garbage people, so feel free to come by and take it. I plan to put a sign up tonight, but as described above, if you drive west on Montrose, turn right on Narragansett, turn right on Sunnyside, then turn immediately right into the alley and drive down a bit, you will see the sod stacked up on the right right inside my fence. Take as much as you want, all of it if you can.

297 Apartments Near O'Hare Approved Over Alderman's Objection
CITY HALL - A key city panel approved the construction of a seven-story, 297-unit luxury apartment complex near the Cumberland CTA Blue Line station in a 7-1 vote on Thursday despite the objection of Ald. Anthony Napolitano (41st), who said residents of the 41st Ward did not want the project.

Napolitano: From Pro-Publica Illinois:https://www.propublica.org/article/illinois-policy-institute-northwest-chicago-affordable-housing
Amid Affordable Housing Dispute, Conservatives Seek a Home in Chicago

Groups tied to Illinois Policy Institute and talk show host Dan Proft back GOP candidates on city’s Northwest Side.(Excerpts):"Starting with the 2012 elections, some institute leaders began funding campaigns after a series of transactions involving other organizations and political action committees they formed, records show."

"The Illinois Opportunity Project, in turn, poured more than $1.7 million into political campaigns and committees across the state, according to election board records. "..."Some of the money from the Illinois Opportunity Project went to a pair of Northwest Side candidates for the Chicago City Council in 2015. John Garrido, a Chicago police officer running for alderman of the city’s 45th Ward, received $2,000, while Anthony Napolitano, a former police officer and firefighter vying to be 41st Ward alderman, got $3,000."..."In 2016, the Illinois Opportunity Project also loaned $325,000 to Liberty Principles, a political action committee founded and run by Proft. Liberty Principles spent more than $10.5 million in races across the state in 2015 and 2016, including about $118,000 backing Garrido. Proft didn’t respond to a request for comment. The 2015 results were mixed. In the 41st Ward, Napolitano upset an ally of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s. But for the second time in four years, Garrido lost to John Arena, a self-described progressive who received significant backing from unions and liberal donors."

5150 N Northwest Hwy proposal left off state housing authority agenda

Preliminary agenda for state board meeting on low-income housing tax credits does not include proposal for 5150 N Northwest Hwy. Barring any late changes to the agenda, it is not clear what impact the lack of tax credits would have on the feasibility of the housing proposal for this year. The developer, Full Circle Communities, could not be reached for comment. Tax credits are often required for affordable housing developments. One local housing group has questioned the neutrality of the state board. http://nadignewspapers.com/2018/05/15/5150-project-not-on-preliminary-agenda-for-low-income-housing-tax-credits/

Daniel D-You are correct about our 'great alderman'. He is truly a politician at work and I think there is something behind this whole 5150 project to get all of these low income section 8 applicants into this building. There has to be some kind of kick back of some sort. These guys cannot ever be trusted b/c they could care less about public opinion. It will always be all about the $$$$ with these guys in power. They are really expert at creating smoke screens. I have to sometimes wonder how these guys sleep at night?? Probably better than the rest of us honest folks IMHO. Just my general opinion...
