Black & White Cat in our yard

This black & white cat came around today, hanging around our feral cats and caterwauling. It's fairly large and appears well fed, and it really wasn't interested in our cats' food. No ear tipping, so definitely not a registered feral cat, but still skittish of humans. Other than the fact that it's significantly larger than our male-neutered feral cats, I'm inclined to suspect it's a female in heat due to the excessive caterwauling and following our male-neutered feral cats around,...

If this is your cat, please let me know, otherwise we'll contact Treehouse to try and trap it before any more unwanted kittens are conceived.

To give context, we chose A-American to install a granite countertop we bought from them in a second bathroom. The granite is beautiful and the installation went smoothly.

Years later we hired a contractor to redo our main bathroom. We bought the granite from a place our contractor recommended (I can’t remember the name of the place-it was in the western suburbs), and our contractor installed it. The installation did not go as smoothly. There was some slight damage to the drywall that the contractor had to repair. Nothing major, but it showed us that A-American really knew their business.

They have a location on Irving Park and Kedzie. http://www.aamericanflooring.com/aamerican/a-american-custom-flooring-locations

I second A-American! I have referred them to several clients and they always impress! They are top in their field. Many developers use them also. They also have a very nice selection of granites. And what is really fun is you can go to the warehouse and pick out the slab your granite comes from! But if you prefer quartz, they have plenty. Just west of Kenzie on the south side of Irving Park Rd.

Water line install pipe replacement Referrals needed

Hello, i'm getting a waterline install quote for a 3 flat in the Northside of Chicago. Looking for economical referrals if anyone has any. I've already gotten pricey quotes from Apex, and Parks Plumbing but am wondering if a smaller company can do better. Thanks everyone.

  • May I ask why the street to house line needs to be replaced? Is it leaking before reaching the house or having low pressure issue? When I replaced the lines in my building we did it from the point where it entering the house to all the fixtures and the boiler room.

  • Mike Goode Owner of Goode Plumbing in Chicago

When you say waterline, are you referring to the water service? This is the line that brings water from the municipal main to your building. If that’s the case, then your choices among plumbing contractors is going to be more limited than for work that does not involve going into the public way, which is required to replace a water service. Depending on the current size and fixture count, you may we’ll need to go into the street, requiring a street opening permit among other things. I’m not certain of the age of your 3 flat, but many older buildings in Chicago have a 1 inch lead (or iron) water service which no longer meets current code. You will need to bring things up to current code once you expose it. We do not do water services yet-it is one of the very few services we do not offer (but are looking to in the not too distant future) but would be happy to refer you to someone. If you are looking for inside plumbing, I’d be happy to give you any advice or take a look at things if you’d like.

Very nicely done and withstanding the test of time. Two other EB neighbors who've used him continue to recommend Ironman (owner is always on-site working the job).

Since at least mid-December the SE corner of Paulina at Ainslie has been taped off as a Tow Zone, supposedly by the Dept of Streets and Sanitation. However, no work nor workers have been spotted a single time. But I do have reason to believe that this is being abused...

The sign posted currently reads, “No Parking-Tow Zone 7a - 11pm through 1/30/18” yet more often than not a lone Dept of Streets & Sani truck is parked inside the Tow Zone at all hours. There has also been a dark red minivan spotted parked there, also in the Tow Zone, also during the listed times. I’ve done a little Google sleuthing and have reason to believe that this is occurring directly in front of a house in which an employee of the Dept of Streets & Sani lives.

In my 15 years in this city I’ve never once seen street work being done in a residential neighborhood at 11pm...

This may all be coincidence, but with how difficult it is to park on this street and the city that we live in, I thought I’d stir the pot and see what was cooking.

Smells awfully fishy to me.

  • So I contacted the alderman's office and here was the responce:

So I contacted the alderman's office and here was the responce:

Thanks for your email. There is an active permit in the city's system for the Dept. of Water Management to repair a defective buffalo box in the parkway there at 4895 N. Paulina. They had an initial dig date on the permit of 12/1 and then it was moved to 12/26. I know that DWM has been grappling with the number of leaks and frozen water services that popped up during the cold snap, and I suspect that this delayed them coming to perform this repair which isn't as critical as someone without water.

Your neighbor's name is Erick Norton and he is the 47th Ward Superintendent. He coordinates garbage pickup, snow removal, and sanitation code enforcement here in the ward. He is one of 50 such superintendent's in the City of Chicago. I asked him about this and he reported that he was having low water pressure in his home and put a request in to have the city inspect. When they did, DWM found the defective buffalo box and put the item in the queue for repairs.

I will reach out to DWM today to see if I can get a more concrete timetable. I will also see about having the signs taken down unless they plan to be there shortly.

    --------

PrinceRobot again. This still doesn't really seem right to me. I've followed up in terms of the time table and sent a few snaps just to prove my point. To be fair, since I started this thread dude has not been parking there. So maybe he's already paying attention?

  • nice work!

Hello Neighbors - I've owned my home for 22 years on Paulina between Montrose and Wilson. It seems, particularly over the past few years, the use of salt on the public sidewalks - not just by multi-unit buildings and businesses - but also by homeowners has increased dramatically. As the owner of a dog that I walk twice a day for 40 minutes each time, I'm finding it impossible to get through a walk without my dog coming up lame from salt burns on his paw pads at least 6 times each walk - sometimes even more. Don't get me wrong, salt can be useful on those rare occasions when we have a glaze ice situation or when melting snow suddenly re-freezes. But to simply throw down piles of salt to avoid shoveling or - for whatever reason - throwing it down after shoveling, just doesn't make sense or is just a sign of laziness. As an example, after the last snow event, not a single grain of salt was used by the homeowners on the north half of the block, and yet the sidewalks have been and continue to be perfectly clear following conscientious shoveling or snowblowing by my neighbors. In fact, our sidewalks are actually clearer than many of the sidewalks where we have to dodge the piles of salt that remain day after day after application. In fact, with plunging temps so often coming immediately after snow events, as most people know, salt dramatically loses its effectiveness - yet it lingers on sidewalks for weeks.

Some might say "can't the dogs just wear those booties"? No. While some dogs will tolerate them the majority of dogs refuse to wear them and just push them off their paws.

I ask that homeowners - as well as tenants/condo owners, please ask your snow removal service or superintendent - to seriously limit the use of salt to those situations where it is genuinely needed and is actually effective. And please, do not throw it down just to avoid actually removing snow.

Thank for listening.

  • Here we go again!

Other posters are correct: There isn't anything I can do about snow that drifts and melts overnight and creates an ice skating rink on the front concrete. I do have a dog and do spent the extra on the expensive pet safe salt because leaving the ice on my front parkway so my elderly neighbors, my mail person, and any other passersby fall and break something isn't an option. Do you know what is an option? Twice daily trips to the Foster Beach Dog Park.

I agree that calling 311 to report those who don't shovel is import. What you're asking is just entitled whining.

Want to know more about this national holiday? Keep reading.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent
question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Against what seemed like
impossible odds, Dr. King and scores of his fellow citizens of all races came
together and, ultimately, helped bend the moral arc of the universe toward
justice. In recognition of Dr. King’s incredible legacy of service to all, Congress
designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of
service in 1994, and charged the Corporation for National and Community
Service with leading this effort. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” Today's commemoration of the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15 is an opportunity to remember that history. It is also a time to consider how much work still remains to fulfill Dr. King’s dream.

My brother went to Gordon Tech in the 1990s and loved the auto and wood shops among other things. It is now called DePaul College Prep. My son is in the 6th grade and we are starting to look at high schools. A couple of items on their website alarmed me. One is that it seems that with the change to DePaul CP, they also did away with all shop classes. While my son wants to go to college, I felt it important that he learn to work with his hands as well. It seems so many people go to college only to come out and struggle to find work. Yet I have a friend who is an electrician and he makes fantastic money, and has always been busy.

The other concern was, is DePaul CP a racist school? I see they have a Black Student Union, but none for whites! I do not want to send my son to a racist school since we are a family that is proud of what God made us (I am white, my wife is Hispanic) so we would not mind him joining a group of others that would share like minded ideas about their culture, as I am sure the Black Student Union does, but to have one and not the other worries me in that, this may be a school that teaches that some races deserve special treatment based solely on the color of their skin. Does anyone have experience with DePaul CP? Many thanks for advise. We have a couple of years, but time passes quickly!

No guilt whatsoever on my part.

Yes these are both true. My electrician friend says that another complaint he has is when his customers go on youtube, assume each job is just like it is on the internet and then question his price, yet are unable to turn a screwdriver on their own. He charges $185 per hour for his labor rate, and even with overhead, that is not a bad living.

Never ending car alarm

Hi folks,

I wanted to know if anyone has experienced a never ending car alarm somewhere on Lawrence between Oakley and Leavitt. Today, I was woken up at 7am by this alarm, it is now 9:30am and it’s still going on. Tuesday afternoon and night it seems the same car had the same issue. The alarm went on till 8pm from the mid afternoon. I called 311 which connected me to the police they said they would bring a car out this was a little before 8am but obviously nothing has happened. Does anyone have any suggestions what to do about this?

I called 311 once for a car going off all night. They said the only thing they could do was put a noise violation ticket on it. Which wouldn't help get it turned off obviously. Another time was a neighbor's car that beeped outside my window everytime a car drove down the street. It was going off several times a minute round the clock. I was starting to go crazy after a week of this. I finally put a note on the car explaining the frequency. After the note disappeared so did the sound. I think non nasty notes are the most effective. Unfortunately I don't think you can do anything in the moment because I don't think cops will tow the car. Unless you know how to get into the car and turn it off like that other guy!

Google the battery location of the make and model of the offending car, and use a hammer to put a chisel or long screwdriver through it.

After changing ideas on the venue and guests and date, we finally decided to have our wedding at Goose Island brewery on Clybourn next July with about 80 guests. We reserved two event rooms and will have a buffet and bar in one, and the marriage ceremony and dancing in the other. The food and beverage choices are very good and affordable. The sound system is great and we will do our own music using spotify. Lisa the event coordinator is super nice. We are happy with our choice and can't wait!

Need a student or retiree Sundays Noon-4pm for dusting of merchandise and shelves plus sweeping.

Pay is $50. Job involves dusting of all shelves, merchandise and products used in treatments, dusting of celling fans, and thorough sweeping. Since this is all that is needed, no need for professional cleaning, so this is perfect for a student or retiree looking for a little extra cash. Location is a semi-basement, which means cobwebs and daddy long legs do show up, so the person has to be ok with removal of small cobwebs and the appearance of the occasional spider. Really pleasant environment, location is off of Montrose near Damen. If interested, please email danielasfacialstudio@gmail.com.

Greetings My Neighbors!

It's time to get ready to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day on Monday, January 15.

In recognition of Dr. King’s incredible legacy of service to all, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. Against what seemed like impossible odds, Dr. King and scores of his fellow citizens of all races came together and, ultimately, helped bend the moral arc of the universe toward justice. The upcoming commemoration of the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15, is an opportunity to remember that history and re-commit ourselves as citizens by volunteering in service to one another. It is also a time to consider how much work still remains to fulfill Dr. King’s dream.

You can get going to celebrate MLK Day in three easy steps:

1) Dine
Register now to join with your neighbors at the Northwest area's first and only MLK Day Dinner on Monday, January 15 from 6:30PM - 8:30PM. Once again this year we'll be at the Wildwood Tavern**, 6941 W. Touhy, Niles. Cost is only $15/person. The price includes a chili bar, soup, salad and breads.

To register you can 1) simply reply to this post or 2) send an email to us at jac.charlier@gmail.com or 3) click here https://www.facebook.com/events/380722305718681/ for Facebook Event site.

**Wildwood Tavern has free parking and is easily accessible via CTA.

2) Donate
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Through the MLK National Day of Service, you can answer that question. Locate where and how here: https://www.nationalservice.gov/mlkday

3) Demand
The single word that best describes the work of Dr. King is justice. To that end, this year Unity in Community is proud to support the Chicago Women's March on January 20. Learn more here: http://womens121marchonchicago.org/

Jury Duty 26 S California

Any tips, suggestions, thoughts? Never had Jury Duty there.
Thanks!

  • Been there twice but my panel was not called so it was very boring. If you're driving stay on Western and turn West at 26th and then South at California and you're there. There is free parking for jurors right across the street from the courthouse if you show your summons. TV in the waiting room. I brought my lunch. There is a cafeteria in the building and many Mexican restaurants in the area. You must go through a metal detector and empty your pockets or purse.

  • Bring your lunch. Especially if you get impaneled

Case of the Disappearing Ink

I keep purchase receipts for items that are expensive, have a warranty, for tax records, resell, etc. Has anyone noticed that the ink on the reguster receipt disappears in a few months so the only proof of purchase is a blank piece of paper. It seems that this is not a benefit to the purchaser. I am thinking I should contact a consumer rights agency.

  • I pay for business purchases through my bank acct., then I download it to TaxAct and do a category report. Bingo, it's all there. I also keep an XLS of non-purchased things like biz mileage.

  • I Xerox important reciepts cause I have had this problem in the past.

Coyote Sighting

Just wanted to let everyone know (especially those with animals) that I saw a coyote this morning running through the alley in between Damen and Winchester. It went running from Winnemac up towards Foster.

  • Spam Alert Don't be selling your used junk up in here, okay?

"Coyotes do actually pose a threat, but not very much to humans...."

I believe there have been two documented cases of coyotes killing humans - two - in all of North America, in all of recorded history. No yes, "not very much," indeed.

"So yes, 'not very much,' indeed"

I'm not sure which irritates me more: when posters make careless typos, or when they subject readers to their corrections. :)

Does anyone know of any Waterbed stores in the area? It appears as though our bed has sprung a leak.

TIA

@fabia - thank you. Do you know if a bicycle tire repair kit will work on a waterbed leak?

Jet Noise

Hi, I live in Ravenswood and I was wondering if anyone has ideas that actually work to drown out the loud jet noise? I know this has been an issue for a while but it just seems like excessive amount of planes flying over this area. Thanks

Hi Wazzup, the east-west runways are new since 2015. And planes now drop altitude and fly very low once they are past the obstacles of lakefront high-rises. Therefore aircraft noise was recently shifted to neighborhoods, where it was never a concern. Planes are now landing on the new Wilson aligned and Berteau aligned runways opened to replace O'Hare's longstanding diagonal runways. Planes are at a pretty high altitude along the lake because of building height, so you don't experience the noise neighbors west of you are upset about. Planes drop to 1,000', then lower about 1200 west. I too have state-of-the-art insulation and super insulated windows. What you have isn't adequate if you live in a neighborhood west of the lakefront with shorter buildings, where planes fly much lower.

  • Wazzup not available

@southport - so i have something else to be thankful for! thanks for the update.

Parent-Child Class?

Just moved to this neighborhood. Want to check out a Montessori school for my 14 month old daughter. Three blocks from where we live, there is a school called Montessori Gifted Prep. We toured there, but they are full. Thinking about to trying their Parent-Child class on Jan. 25 Anyone want to join together?

  • DQ

Thank you all for the recommendations. I will definitely check out other options in the neighborhood, I won't go so far like O'hare unfortunately. I was just so amazed by how well children at Montessori Gifted Prep spoke both Spanish and Mandarin at this early age when I toured there.

North Park is not a Montessori school, but they do incorporate Montessori principles for primary grades. https://www.npeschool.org/

Keep in mind that not all children do well in that environment; ours did much better in a highly structured, competitive program

Please crush your boxes! Recycling tips...

As the gift giving season arrives, a friendly reminder to please always crush your boxes for the blue recycling bins. It maximizes space for neighbors to also fill the bins. Also, don't place plastic bags in them ~ they jam up the recycling equipment at the plant. And finally, keep everything loose, not in bags, even paper bags. Happy holidays and happy recycling!

  • The problem with dumping paper in with the other recycled items is that it becomes unusable; that is why no one wants our paper to recycle anymore. The plastic bags gum up the machines , and are therefore prohibited, but are the only way of keeping the paper clean.

China has stopped accepting the paper materials (just send it to the developing world) and now the US companies are trying to sell it to India. Our recycling is not well thought out and hence pretty useless. Until the City comes up with a better way to do this, a large majority of the waste is not able to be recycled at all.

  • ScottK Near Glenwood/Devon in North Edgewater

Seems like the thing for Chicago to do is find out how things are done in San Francisco and other cities with a high rate of recycling. As with most problems, we tend to act like it's unique to Chicago and that we need to figure it out here.

Missing Cat: Moobert Jones

Hi there,

I saw a ton of posters around the neighborhood about Moobert, so I thought I'd post it here:
Moobert is an indoor/outdoor cat who is white with black spots that look exactly like a cow's. He has a collar on with his name, Moobert Jones, on a tag, and he's very, very friendly.
His owner is missing him very much and would love to be contacted if anyone's seen him--if you have I'll post her number/his picture!
Thank you, let me know!

  • Just found the little guy, number isn't working for him, anyone know the phone number for his owner?

  • N

Is Moo still not home? Please return him to the 4800 block of N Wolcott and he will be fine. He live approximately at 4825 n and will find his way in to his home. He is my neighbor.

I venture over there as I eat and visit friends in the neighborhood and the place is seriously dated, and there have been multiple times I have visited the store packed with customers and only two cashiers on shift. The lines are literally halfway down the store aisles. And that is once you are in the store. You have to go out into the Rob Me Dim barely light parking lot. The lighting reminds me of a Kmart parking lot, from like the 1980s. Lighting technology has changed so this lot should be light up like daylight at all times. It is seriously dark and a carjacking/mugging waiting to happen.

Volunteer opportunities for Christmas Eve?

Anyone aware of opportunities to offer our time on Christmas Eve? We have no family plans for that day due to scheduling issues... We would like to give back to the community.
Thanks for any options you are aware of..

  • If you’re an animal lover, you may want to call some local shelters to see if they need volunteers so their regular staff could spend it with their families.

  • Neighborhood Dad 25-year resident of North Center/St Bens/Lincol...

JanBran - good for you two. There’s no bad, or even “worst,” time to volunteer.
Many churches, soup kitchens and other organizations do Christmas dinners. Maybe they need some Christmas Eve help. Common Pantry and St. Benedict Parish are two that come to mind. Salvation Army, Misericordia Home, Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club, etc may also have some needs or connections to places needing volunteers.

Greetings My Neighbors!

Just got this urgent appeal from a sister American Legion Post. I'm asking you to contribute by Wednesday, December 20 to the 2017 Toys-for-Tots Drive, The Drive is short 10,000 toys in two age groups: GIRLS Ages 10 to 13 and BOYS Ages 10 to 13. Toys received by this Wednesday are able to be delivered on time by USMC 2/24 (2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment).

Toys should be new, in the original packaging, and unwrapped. Please – no stuffed animals.

Here’s two ways you can easily contribute:

1) Drop off toys at any IHOPS in Cook County. For our NW area, here are the nearby locations:
IHOP SKOKIE, 9500 Skokie Blvd, SKOKIE, IL 60077
IHOP NORRIDGE, 7056 West Forest Preserve Drive, NORRIDGE, IL 60706
IHOP CHICAGO, 2818 W Diversey Ave, CHICAGO, IL 60647
IHOP CHICAGO, 4210 N Cicero Ave, CHICAGO, IL 60641
IHOP CHICAGO, 5929 N Lincoln Ave, CHICAGO, IL 60659

For other IHOPS, please log onto: http://www.ihop.com/ihop-locations.

2) Donate online to Toys for Tots:
http://chicago-il.toysfortots.org/local-coordinator-sites/lco-sites/local-donate.aspx

Your donated dollars will go a LONG way because the Marines have special buying agreements (big discounts) with the toy stores with NO shipping and NO sales tax! (Toys for Tots is an registered 501c3 charity. So your dollars are also tax deductible).

97% of your donation goes to providing toys, books and other gifts to less fortunate children. 3% is spent on support - principally covering fundraising expenses. Not one donated dollar goes to pay for salaries or any other manpower costs.

Questions? Please contact me at jac.charlier@gmail.com or via Nextdoor or just around the neighborhood.

Folks, we can do this...together. Thank you, in advance!
