I venture over there as I eat and visit friends in the neighborhood and the place is seriously dated, and there have been multiple times I have visited the store packed with customers and only two cashiers on shift. The lines are literally halfway down the store aisles. And that is once you are in the store. You have to go out into the Rob Me Dim barely light parking lot. The lighting reminds me of a Kmart parking lot, from like the 1980s. Lighting technology has changed so this lot should be light up like daylight at all times. It is seriously dark and a carjacking/mugging waiting to happen.

Two thumbs up Andrew. You know a regressive liberal when you hear about more diversity at the grocery store.

  • a number of jewleses prices at the register dont match whats listed on the shelves. If you try to order from the meat/deli counter, the workers will ignore you.
With the deli and prepared food failing inspections, it would be a refresher to have Marianos come in.

Water Main Progress

Does anyone have any inside info on NPL Construction's progress of the water main projects on the Northside? I can't find much in the media. I found some hits on DNA (RIP) and Sun Times about disgruntled aldermen in June/July, but there seems to be radio silence since then. The various ward (e.g., 47th/40th) sites list statuses of specific projects, but not much else.

Specifically, is this as big a debacle as it seems? Are the aldermen continuing to apply pressure to NPL? The long night is coming. What lies in store after the first major snowfall and subsequent first street plowing?

Break into silver 2001 bmw

Last around early morning, any where from 11:00pm-6:30am my car was broken into. $250 was stolen from my glove compartment as well as my debit card and other cards that were in the car. They also took the WHOLE change compartment as well. Always remember to lock your car doors. Happen by oakley between winnemac and argyle. If anyone has camera and captured it please message me.

Sorry to sound like a jerk, but if you left your car doors unlocked in the city at any hours for any length of time, you sort of deserve that. Think of it as a relatively inexpensive lesson. I love the city BUT there are some basic rules you NEED to follow:

-LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS. Your car will have items taken from it.

    - Do not leave valuables in your car where they are visible. Locked or not, it will be stolen. And to a scumbag lowlife thief, that pair of free headphones that came with your iPhone are valuables. They will cause $500 in damage to your car to break the window to get them.

-Do not sit idling in a car looking at your phone or napping. You will be carjacked or robbed.

-Do not walk alone at night. You will be robbed or mugged.

-Do not work in the garage at night with any door open or unlocked. Likelyhood of being robbed is high.

-Do not leave your house locked or windows open ever. Yes even on the second floor I close and lock my windows. This is not paranoia it is reality in the city..

    -Conceal and carry.

  • I'll add two more: when you're gassing up, lock the car so that while you're using the pump and hose, some thief can't jump into your car and drive it away. I've been doing this for a long time and just last week, this type of car theft happened to...

I'll add two more: when you're gassing up, lock the car so that while you're using the pump and hose, some thief can't jump into your car and drive it away. I've been doing this for a long time and just last week, this type of car theft happened to a fellow at a gas station. It was on the broadcast news. And, stop living in your phones as you walk. A fast phone snatch is sooo easy.

I do differ from conceal and carry; I don't want to own firearms. I grew up with parents who owned guns and taught my sister and me how to use them (22, 38, Luger, air rifle). However, about two years ago, three teenaged punks approached me quickly. My hands were in my pockets and I pressed one hand against the outer pocket (to make a bulge) and said, "do you really want to find out that I have a concealed carry license?" They turned and ran...phew! So...everyone, be safe and not so trusting.

He's safe with me for as long as he needs--maybe forever if we can (slowly) get him together with our two cats. He's so sweet. I'm taking him back to the vet for a full exam next weekend.

However, I'll leave this post up for a while in case someone is looking for him. Please let your neighbors know if you hear anything! Thank you.

I've heard that some physical therapy offices will take these and donate them to countries in need, but I'd also love to help local folks if possible. I've checked places like ALS association, Shriners, and other organizations that don't accept these items.

Does anyone know of a local nonprofit that can use these items? If not I still plan on asking my physical therapist if they can donate them.

Thanks!

Had nothing on me to move the dog. So i went home to get a blanket, went back and the dog was gone. Looked in the garbages and didn't see it. Anyone know any thing?

A “savvy billionaire” would be unlikely to shut down a business just because the workers unionized. But it could have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. Or just one more hassle he didn’t want to deal with to eventually, hopefully, make DNAInfo and Gothamist work.

Again, just speculation. You’d have to ask Mr. Ricketts his real reasons. Please report back!

Crosswalk Signage Needed

There is a crosswalk at the intersection of Foster and Claremont, however there are no signs in either direction notifying drivers of this. I've seen children on their way to school almost get hit by speeding cars attempting to make the light at Western and Foster. This needs fixing immediately. I've requested 311 to do this at least 6 times over the summer. So far....

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

It's not 'walk one block' - it's TWO blocks: one was to, and one way back from.

Cars should stop for pedestrians. What has a one-way street got to do with this question?

I saw a driver stop for pedestrians, that's the polite and sensitive thing to do, instead of drivers complaining on Every Block about things that get in their way and slow them down.

  • Citizen Pain Citizen Pain

Cars should respect pedestrians if the pedestrians are using a crosswalk. If the pedestrians are jaywalking the cars should also stop (of course) sans the respect part. That's the civilized way.

Question about sewer gas smell

Hello, Wanted to see if the community had any insight about a building issue.

This past summer our building had the catch basin outside the basement cleared out of sludge. The following day we noticed a sewer gas odor inside the basement area closest to the catch basin. Seemed like it was coming from the inside drain.

We've poured water down the drain, thinking maybe the trap was dry, but it didn't do much for the odor.

I'm not sure whether or how the drains are connected, or if there's a ready fix for the odor.

Any insights would be appreciated! Thank you.

  • Not like paint thinner to me.

  • @MikeGoode appreciate the offer. We're still discussing as a building a good way forward. @DJH no, definitely not like paint thinner. Much more like the smell you get walking near Chicago manholes on a hot day, or by the river.

Last night walking home from the L around 10:45pm. I saw a black kid - 15-18? - trying the handles of all the cars on Claremont north of Lawrence. He then crossed Lawrence and tried the handles of all the cars in the lot where the CorePower and PureBarre are (I did call 911). Then when I got home (2600 block of W Carmen) my mail had been dumped and only catalogs were left scattered around. I hope nothing important was stolen (yes, I have LifeLock). Stay vigilant.

Apartments?

Just curious if anyone in Ravenswood/Lincoln square have any other resources for looking at apartments in the area? As opposed to craigslist - for all intensive purposes is fine. But I feel there are people in the area who own townhomes that have rentals and just don't feel the need to put them online? Perhaps it relates to just walking around the area and looking for signs.

anyone have any thoughts?

Trapped in a passionless marriage with a husband who will not father her children,Yerma's maternal longing becomes an obsession. Like much of Lorca’s other work, the play casts a critical eye upon what he called“the grotesque treatment of women” and the repression of female sexual desire. In Max Truax's production of Theatre Y ensemble member Hector Álvarez's new translation, the barrenness of Yerma’smarriage reduces her home to a prison, under the controlling force of the male gaze, personified by an ever-present male chorus. This is the "tragic poem" of a woman stretched between the burden of her family's honor and an all-consuming appetite she can't name or hold.

Agreed, ALWAYS CALL POLICE. Just a week ago, I heard shots fired around 2am and called the police and I gave an idea of where it sounded like it came from, this was near Foster and Hoyne. Also, it's not posted anywhere on Everyblock, but in the 2000 W Block of Farragut, a car had all 4 tires stolen, left on blocks and the passenger side window busted in, this probably occurred very early Wednesday morning because I saw the owner of the car around 10am on Thursday(last week) taking photos of his damaged car. On Thursday night, I got in late from dropping a family member off, around 2am and at 3:12am, I heard a car alarm go off and called 911 immediately. Car that had damage was a Honda. Both Honda and Toyota's tires are highly desired, get lugnut locks for your tires or an alarm or both, for your car. I have a Viper Alarm on my Toyota and Lugnut locks. ALWAYS call the police, just because you don't hear anything else, does not mean whatever you heard is irrelevant.

Whether you use us or another plumber, please know that you actually should use a licensed plumber and not a handyman-per Chicago Plumbing Code, only a licensed plumber is supposed to disconnect a fixture/faucet/etc from a water supply source. You will also want to make sure that the installer does not use flexible supply lines, as they are not allowed by code (an issue that may be brought up when you go to sell). Some faucets do have flexible supply lines built in, which should be braided stainless steel lines and not vinyl, plastic, etc. Even with the built in lines, several inspectors have asked that they be connected using tubular supplies.

I sceamed(Im a soprano screamer so glass was breaking somewhere), yanked my dog hard back towards me and watched as this bandit hopped in the air in fear(i think my scream scared him off his plan to eat my dog) and he bolted across the street to meet up with his cohort. At that point i wasn't sure how many more there might be so i yelled my dogs name and said RUN!! We took off like lighting(well at a fast trot), but my dog kept checking behind us to be sure we weren't being followed.....in all seriousness....WATCH OUT. This really happened, and a smaller dog could have been seriously harmed. Please spread the word. DESCRIPTION: Grey body fur, black stripes, black mask around beedy eyes, fat, sharp claws, working in tandem, north and south sides of west farragut, 2100 block(alley going West to Levitt).

  • LP in Lincoln Square.....couldn't agree more!

  • There's a huge raccoon that often chills on the stoop of a building on Argyle and Bell. He's a scowler too. I have not seen him in several months.

Looking for a store that sells both freekeh and bacalao

Where do I find a store in Chicago, preferably on the northside, that sells both?

  • Citizen Pain Citizen Pain

Yes, they do sell Freekeh at Harvest Time. I saw it tonight - it's near the Bob's Red Mill stuff but a different brand. At the moment they're not carrying Salt Cod.

  • Andrew Linc Sq Lifer

There's a Greek Market on Touhy and Harlem...southwest corner mini-mall. they have bacalao/salted cod.

Foster & Lincoln closure

Does anyone know what happened on Foster between Rockwell and Lincoln?

  • hollyfig2000 Rhonda's mom

    Thank you!!

  • Yup. Walked by with all the red tape and fully expected something bad. Asked one of the police officers and he mentioned the pole would be falling soon. Could see it swaying in the wind.

Wireless microphone(s) needed

I am helping to organize an event to take place in the auditorium of Sulzer Library on November 8. The library has one wireless microphone available but I really need 2 or 3. Would anyone have a suggestion as to where I could borrow 1-2 wireless microphones for that evening?

Michael.....I have a pair of wireless microphones. I used to have a mobile karaoke business on the street and they could use a good home. I would be glad to give them a good home after this event.

  • Second City Sound offers wireless microphone rentals.

Mailbox thief

Anyone know her? She was caught on camera stealing mail from our mailboxes with a key. We've been hit several times and finally got caught on camera. We think she lives by Francisco and Bryn Mawr...watch out!

Are these your sunglasses?

Found these sunglasses when we were cleaning the leaves off the sewers this morning to save the drowning cars. In front of the Romanian church.
