Water Main Progress

Does anyone have any inside info on NPL Construction's progress of the water main projects on the Northside? I can't find much in the media. I found some hits on DNA (RIP) and Sun Times about disgruntled aldermen in June/July, but there seems to be radio silence since then. The various ward (e.g., 47th/40th) sites list statuses of specific projects, but not much else.

Specifically, is this as big a debacle as it seems? Are the aldermen continuing to apply pressure to NPL? The long night is coming. What lies in store after the first major snowfall and subsequent first street plowing?

I live on one of those blocks that have been assaulted since Spring also, really wondering about all that Gas Co meter replacement stuff - who did that really benefit? Then they replaced all the messed up grass and now sewer line replacement folks have totally destroyed all the replaced grass along with even more landscaping. My biggest complaints are the parking hassles and the dirt/dust that's constantly kicked up from the construction, I guess it's part of the process but it's just so nasty. I would like them to give neighbors updates as the project progresses (using the term loosely) so we could at least have some idea of how much longer and what's happening in general terms, or maybe some kind of booklet explaining the process so we can at least get our hopes up. That's my wish.

The lines are literally halfway down the store aisles. And that is once you are in the store. You have to go out into the Rob Me Dim barely light parking lot. The lighting reminds me of a Kmart parking lot, from like the 1980s. Lighting technology has changed so this lot should be light up like daylight at all times. It is seriously dark and a carjacking/mugging waiting to happen.

Mariano's on Sheridan/Foster has a small produce section with wilted, nearly-rotting organic stuff. Its hot bar has gotten several "fails" from inspectors, and its seating area is usually hogged by those seeking shelter from the weather--so those who actually want to sit & eat what they bought are out of luck. Its aisles have a very limited selection of brands compared to the ones in Ravenswood & Lincolnwood (something I've noticed in defrocked Dominick's compared to from-the-ground-up Mariano's). When I need mainstream brands WF doesn't carry (and need them faster than Peapod can deliver) I go to the Lincolnwood Mariano's, especially around Passover because of its huge kosher section. (Jewel at Howard/Kedzie has nearly as large a kosher section and is cleaner than other Jewels). When I want to shop w/in walking distance, get the freshest fish & grass-fed/pastured meats & eggs, or get certain things std. groceries don't have I walk to WF. If I can wait a day or two, I use Peapod. I don't like the lack of brand selection (and inability to take my cart to my car) at Aldi, nor the limited selection and inability to choose the size of my meat/cheese/produce purchases at TJ's. As for TI, their int'l selection has been eclipsed by Mariano's, Fresh Farms & Cermak Mkt on Ridge. They combine WF's high prices with some Jewel stores' declining quality control.

Best Place to Advertise an Apartment for Rent?

it used to be the best way was to have a sign on the door - LOL - old skool and the Reader.

Then it was a Craig's List

Now there are all kinds of places- Domu, RadPad, Zillow, blah blah

For those that looked for apartments recently - how did you find places? Do you think it is generational?

  • Mute Mute Me

I use apartment rental services. They drive me around for free i pay for one credit check and i dont have to call everyplace to ask if they allow cats.

  • My husband and I have been looking for several months for a new apt. I personally found that Trulia was a very good site to use because I could target specifics i.e., rent, cat friendly, etc. We found our new apt. this way.

Broadway Bank space

It looks like something is moving into the Broadway Bank building. Does anyone know what’s happening there?

  • I think that event space that wanted to go in on Ridge Avenue and was turned away by the area residents is opening up shop there. I could be wrong but that's my guess.

  • If you look at the posts on their Facebook page (linked above), they seem to have been working on turning the bank building into an event space since the end of 2015 (nearly two years), so it is not likely related to the event space on Ridge.

New Public Art Gallery & Venue on Granville Avenue and Winthrop

It's really cool to see that someone who has the means, support a neighborhood they believe so much in versus hoarding their cash or investing it elsewhere. Not sure if others heard about the new venue that Rae Ann and her husband developed and instituted in the neighborhood recently.

Granville area is really becoming a great part of the Edgewater Neighborhood to live in. It's because of YOU, me and people like the Rae Ann (hope I am not messing up her name). You create your environment, your reality.

Excited to continue to build a great place to live with all of you.

Hi all,

My cat (the one in my profile photo) has been peeing on my low pile carpet and the staining is present on the reverse/bottom side. The carpet is 6ft by 5ft 9in. I'm not sure of the material, but I'm guessing synthetic. I'm a renter, but the carpet was bought by the previous tenant, so it's technically mine. I'd rather get the carpet professionally cleaned than have to buy a new one. I don't care if the color changes, I just need a way to protect the wood floors and get the odor removed. I've already tried cleaning it by hand, but given the heavy staining on the reverse/bottom size, I'm concerned it'll eventually disintegrate and maybe stain the wood flooring.

Can someone please recommend an inexpensive place to get my small low pile carpet professionally cleaned in Edgewater? Can I take it to a regular dry cleaner or no? This is my first time having to do this.

Thanks!

(My cat is medically fine. He's recently been to the vet.)

My initial post was over a year ago. I resolved the issue then.

In case someone else runs into the same problem, this is how I successfully dealt with it.

    1) My cat had recently been to the vet who said he was medically healthy.
    2) I got a spray bottle of "Nature's Miracle 3in1" and heavily sprayed the carpet, following the directions on the bottle.
    3) I got a very large clear thick painter's tarp and folded it up to fit the carpet. I then duct taped it to the underside of the carpet to prevent any moisture from going through the carpet.
    4) I moved my furniture around, so that the spot my cat was peeing in would be blocked, in case his scent was still there. The areas around the litterbox are now also blocked, so none of the wood floor is exposed. (The litterbox is wedged in a corner with an additional tray to catch kitty litter as he exits the litterbox.)
    5) I also created additional barriers to keep my dog from getting to the litter boxes around my apt. I'm guessing that my dog's litterbox intrusions are what caused the problems in the first place. As disgusting as it is, it's common for dogs to want to eat cat feces. One theory is that cats pass a lot of protein into their feces, and that's why dogs want to eat them. Dogs are scavengers. And yes, my dog regularly goes to the vet for his annual exam and shots and is medically healthy.

  • Get a pheremone spray. Our cat did this a few times on our door frame when he got a whiff of another cat next door. We sprayed this stuff on the doorframe called No Mark that I got at Pet Co next to Jewel and it works SO WELL. He is like an entirely different cat now. It relaxes them and takes away their urge to spray and go outside the box.

Sorry to sound like a jerk, but if you left your car doors unlocked in the city at any hours for any length of time, you sort of deserve that. Think of it as a relatively inexpensive lesson. I love the city BUT there are some basic rules you NEED to follow:

-LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS. Your car will have items taken from it.

    - Do not leave valuables in your car where they are visible. Locked or not, it will be stolen. And to a scumbag lowlife thief, that pair of free headphones that came with your iPhone are valuables. They will cause $500 in damage to your car to break the window to get them.

-Do not sit idling in a car looking at your phone or napping. You will be carjacked or robbed.

-Do not walk alone at night. You will be robbed or mugged.

-Do not work in the garage at night with any door open or unlocked. Likelyhood of being robbed is high.

-Do not leave your house locked or windows open ever. Yes even on the second floor I close and lock my windows. This is not paranoia it is reality in the city..

    -Conceal and carry.

  • I'll add two more: when you're gassing up, lock the car so that while you're using the pump and hose, some thief can't jump into your car and drive it away. I've been doing this for a long time and just last week, this type of car theft happened to...

I'll add two more: when you're gassing up, lock the car so that while you're using the pump and hose, some thief can't jump into your car and drive it away. I've been doing this for a long time and just last week, this type of car theft happened to a fellow at a gas station. It was on the broadcast news. And, stop living in your phones as you walk. A fast phone snatch is sooo easy.

I do differ from conceal and carry; I don't want to own firearms. I grew up with parents who owned guns and taught my sister and me how to use them (22, 38, Luger, air rifle). However, about two years ago, three teenaged punks approached me quickly. My hands were in my pockets and I pressed one hand against the outer pocket (to make a bulge) and said, "do you really want to find out that I have a concealed carry license?" They turned and ran...phew! So...everyone, be safe and not so trusting.

So we are now in appeals court in our litigation against North Park Elementary School in the 47th Ward. This was all simply due to our refusal to sell our property (in Coonley boundary area) to the private school so our kids could attend Coonley.

I am still dumbfounded by the justice system in light of the evidence as it continues to side with the influential/well connected in our liberal enclave.

Apparently emails/texts received in discovery such as those outlined below are not enough to show corruption/threats/RICO in our city's courts:

Board Member/Developer to NPES: "I’m going to push his (Chadha) buttons today. My statement to him will be that my customers feel his property is worth less now and may want to wait for city foreclosure and buy it as a side yard."

Principal to NPES Board Members: "Negotiations on 2035 w Montrose have completely halted….We could re-contact the Alderman’s Office and see if he can speed up the court date or put additional pressure on the owner. "

NPES Board Member meeting notes: "Chris feels we need to put this to rest before the owner has a better understanding of our role throughout the last 3-4 months…..I know the Alderman’s office will do anything possible to help us get that property…"

Board Member/Developer to me: "Good luck hope the city doesn't take it away. This was a sure thing"

Thanks for listening/caring,

Does anyone know of a local nonprofit that can use these items? If not I still plan on asking my physical therapist if they can donate them.

Cars should stop for pedestrians. What has a one-way street got to do with this question?

I saw a driver stop for pedestrians, that's the polite and sensitive thing to do, instead of drivers complaining on Every Block about things that get in their way and slow them down.

  • Citizen Pain Citizen Pain

Cars should respect pedestrians if the pedestrians are using a crosswalk. If the pedestrians are jaywalking the cars should also stop (of course) sans the respect part. That's the civilized way.

Question about sewer gas smell

Hello, Wanted to see if the community had any insight about a building issue.

This past summer our building had the catch basin outside the basement cleared out of sludge. The following day we noticed a sewer gas odor inside the basement area closest to the catch basin. Seemed like it was coming from the inside drain.

We've poured water down the drain, thinking maybe the trap was dry, but it didn't do much for the odor.

I'm not sure whether or how the drains are connected, or if there's a ready fix for the odor.

Any insights would be appreciated! Thank you.

  • Not like paint thinner to me.

  • @MikeGoode appreciate the offer. We're still discussing as a building a good way forward. @DJH no, definitely not like paint thinner. Much more like the smell you get walking near Chicago manholes on a hot day, or by the river.

  • neat....but.....just a note. If you're writing for publication, ensure that you've proof read well. The possessive its does not have an apostrophe. That's for the contraction of "it is," i.e. it's.

  • Agreed! It's its, not it’s!

  • It's not a huge thing, but as it's for publication, check the copy as the last thing done. I have Word set to do squiggly red lines under misspelled words, otherwise as a typist I'd be sunk!

An attempted break in in the 2600 block of W Carmen - three black men in the 20s tried to break in to my neighbor's basement on 11/03 during the day but were scared off by a neighbor (911 was called). Last night walking home from the L around 10:45pm. I saw a black kid - 15-18? - trying the handles of all the cars on Claremont north of Lawrence. He then crossed Lawrence and tried the handles of all the cars in the lot where the CorePower and PureBarre are (I did call 911). Then when I got home (2600 block of W Carmen) my mail had been dumped and only catalogs were left scattered around. I hope nothing important was stolen (yes, I have LifeLock). Stay vigilant.

  • Thank you for posting and thank you for calling the police.

Additionally, there have been some stories that seem to have gone unseen on EveryBlock. My wife and I were walking back from a Halloween party on the 4600 block of N Damen on 10/28 around 11PM when we witnessed the arrest of the men who had robbed multiple people in the area including a Half Acre employee on a smoke break. Story here: http://bit.ly/2iJfjfO

There was also a shooting at 4600 N Greenview across from Walgreens on 11/1 where 2 men were hit while sitting in a minivan. Story here: http://dnain.fo/2jggibj

    Thanks for posting, LincolnSquarePoppy.

  • It's getting worse with the season! We've had the same type trying car door handles down our block. Add to that the two times I've seen 2 - 20 something black kids dropped off by cab and roam through neighbors yards looking into windows. Yes 911 was called & they quickly ran off down Lawrence when a neighbor yelled at them.

Local Artist Arrested for Assaulting a Concerned Citizen Durring Community Event.

A certain artist known for his self promotion was arrested this evening for assaulting a concerned citizen who was participating in the weekly positive loitering.

  • Neighborhood Dad 25-year resident of North Center/St Bens/Lincol...

Thanks, Maria. So we know he’s accused of battery, not assault. There goes the First Amendment defense! As Prohibitionist John B. Finch said, “Your right to swing your arm leaves off where my right not to have my nose struck begins.”

Of course, “battery” doesn’t have to cause harm. It could have been a push or a shove or something else far less than a punch or slap. Who knows?

    Does anyone know what happened?

  • No doubt,a pricing dispute over a Saint Helen mural? Possibly a limited edition Tent City lithograph?
