Yesterday's death at the Bryn Mawr Red Line stop?

Hi, neighbors -- I'm just curious if any of you know more details about the man who was hit by the train and died yesterday. The Sun Times names him as "52-year-old James Dillen" -- but that's it. https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/red-purple-line-trains-shut-down-person-removed-from-tracks-at-bryn-mawr/ Does anyone know any more about the circumstances, or about Mr. Dillen?

Thanks,
Michael

52-year-old man fatally struck by CTA train at Bryn Mawr
Normal service resumed on the CTA Red and Purple lines about two hours after a person jumped in front of a train Friday morning in the North Side Edgewater neighborhood, according to police. The man jumped in front of the train just after 7 a.m.

I just feel like the word troubled has negative connotations attatched to it. We never say a person who suffers from a physical illness is troubled. Troubled is usually attatched to people with mental issues not physical.you know people who have behavioral issues are often labeled as troubled. Behavioral issues are generally due to mental health issues. Its a controversial subject.

  • ok, nitpick the word. but i am a hospice volunteer and i hear similar sentiment all the time.

Since at least mid-December the SE corner of Paulina at Ainslie has been taped off as a Tow Zone, supposedly by the Dept of Streets and Sanitation. However, no work nor workers have been spotted a single time. But I do have reason to believe that this is being abused...

The sign posted currently reads, “No Parking-Tow Zone 7a - 11pm through 1/30/18” yet more often than not a lone Dept of Streets & Sani truck is parked inside the Tow Zone at all hours. There has also been a dark red minivan spotted parked there, also in the Tow Zone, also during the listed times. I’ve done a little Google sleuthing and have reason to believe that this is occurring directly in front of a house in which an employee of the Dept of Streets & Sani lives.

In my 15 years in this city I’ve never once seen street work being done in a residential neighborhood at 11pm...

This may all be coincidence, but with how difficult it is to park on this street and the city that we live in, I thought I’d stir the pot and see what was cooking.

Smells awfully fishy to me.

  • Tell the alderman Call the news m, place it on Facebook neighborhood chats. This seems to get the new people moving

  • I live in the block. That truck has been around there for years. It is driven by a guy in streets and san who lives in the area, who apparently rates a truck.

I was weirded out about it too, for years, until I knew this.

Hello Neighbors - I've owned my home for 22 years on Paulina between Montrose and Wilson. It seems, particularly over the past few years, the use of salt on the public sidewalks - not just by multi-unit buildings and businesses - but also by homeowners has increased dramatically. As the owner of a dog that I walk twice a day for 40 minutes each time, I'm finding it impossible to get through a walk without my dog coming up lame from salt burns on his paw pads at least 6 times each walk - sometimes even more. Don't get me wrong, salt can be useful on those rare occasions when we have a glaze ice situation or when melting snow suddenly re-freezes. But to simply throw down piles of salt to avoid shoveling or - for whatever reason - throwing it down after shoveling, just doesn't make sense or is just a sign of laziness. As an example, after the last snow event, not a single grain of salt was used by the homeowners on the north half of the block, and yet the sidewalks have been and continue to be perfectly clear following conscientious shoveling or snowblowing by my neighbors. In fact, our sidewalks are actually clearer than many of the sidewalks where we have to dodge the piles of salt that remain day after day after application. In fact, with plunging temps so often coming immediately after snow events, as most people know, salt dramatically loses its effectiveness - yet it lingers on sidewalks for weeks.

Some might say "can't the dogs just wear those booties"? No. While some dogs will tolerate them the majority of dogs refuse to wear them and just push them off their paws.

I ask that homeowners - as well as tenants/condo owners, please ask your snow removal service or superintendent - to seriously limit the use of salt to those situations where it is genuinely needed and is actually effective. And please, do not throw it down just to avoid actually removing snow.

Thank for listening.

  • Here we go again!

I've lived here for15 years and I always shovel in a timely manner after even the smallest amount of snow. Other posters are correct: There isn't anything I can do about snow that drifts and melts overnight and creates an ice skating rink on the front concrete. I do have a dog and do spent the extra on the expensive pet safe salt because leaving the ice on my front parkway so my elderly neighbors, my mail person, and any other passersby fall and break something isn't an option. Do you know what is an option? Twice daily trips to the Foster Beach Dog Park.

I agree that calling 311 to report those who don't shovel is import. What you're asking is just entitled whining.

One of the reasons Moody's beer garden became so popular was that it was all-ages: you could bring the family and eat outside. Also, the bar indoors was very dark--and, before anti-smoking ordinances were enacted--smoky as hell. So the outdoors became a refuge from smokers too--people still smoked outside, but they could wave the smoke away. (And you & they could see each other and move to a different table).

I never knew any other Moody's but the one on B'way. I know it's not the end of an era, but it's always sad when a person who established something beloved passes away. May his memory be for a blessing,

Anyone have updates/insight on when our new Andersonville restaurants are opening?
Hutch opened pretty quickly and we've already had a tasty dinner there!

Eagerly awating:

And any news on possibilities for the spaces that were Brixton (I miss their steak tartare and chicken pate!) and Adriatica?

I could not figure out the source. Anyone have a clue?

  • There was a Trash truck laying the horn on for some reason. I drove past the truck and was as confused as you are.

West has more single-family homes and 2-flats with garages, so on-street parking's easier to find. I live less than 1/4 mi. from a Red Line station, and it has almost never taken me more than 45 minutes, even in rush hour, to get as far south as Jackson St. (Track problems & the like can happen on any line). Ubers & Lyfts are plentiful; and many of the city's taxi drivers live here--easy to flag down a cab on B'way.

I grew up in NYC, and to get from Queens to Brooklyn on the subway, you had to go through Manhattan. (My husband's commute to college--no dorms at CUNY schools--was 2.5 hrs. each way every day). The NYC subway system is deteriorating due to budget cuts. I lived in Seattle, and drove to law school in south Tacoma-->1 hr. each way). Be glad you don't live in DuPage or Kane County and commute into the Loop. And don't even ask about Los Angeles or the Miami-W. Palm I-95 corridor.

We Chicagoans don't realize how lucky we are when it comes to commuting from a residential 'hood to downtown.

Empty commercial spaces 1200-1400 Devon Ave

I moved just south of Devon Ave off N Wayne Ave a couple of years ago and have noticed that many of the commercial spaces on Devon Ave in my area remain vacant in both older and newer constructed buildings, leading the drag to have a certain gloominess. Can anyone recommend a company that does heat treatment for bedbugs? I used Smithereens and they did not do an good job and I still have a problem.

They explained what they were doing, were very detailed/thorough, and got rid of a bed bug problem that had spread throughout 75% of our building.

Swedish Covenant Hospital rents space in Swedish Bakery building

I'm glad that one of the many empty retail spots is being rent in Andersonville (seriously, I will say this again, the stretch of Clark Street is looking bleak), but I can't say I'm thrilled both personally and for the neighborhood that the best use for the old Swedish Bakery space is a Swedish Covenant doctor's office. Probably won't boost foot traffic much, and won't likely help neighboring businesses. Bottom line is that it's boring. Very boring.

After changing ideas on the venue and guests and date, we finally decided to have our wedding at Goose Island brewery on Clybourn next July with about 80 guests. We reserved two event rooms and will have a buffet and bar in one, and the marriage ceremony and dancing in the other. The food and beverage choices are very good and affordable. The sound system is great and we will do our own music using spotify. Lisa the event coordinator is super nice. We are happy with our choice and can't wait!

  • McBean, hope your marriage is going strong! How did your reception turn out, were you happy with the results and the final cost? And would you mind letting us know how much per head it came out to (or a $ range)?

I like the discussion style here. We start down one topic and end up with a completely different one. How about we agree that Andersonville is no more than a state of mind? Need a student or retiree Sundays Noon-4pm for dusting of merchandise and shelves plus sweeping.

Pay is $50. Job involves dusting of all shelves, merchandise and products used in treatments, dusting of celling fans, and thorough sweeping. Since this is all that is needed, no need for professional cleaning, so this is perfect for a student or retiree looking for a little extra cash. Location is a semi-basement, which means cobwebs and daddy long legs do show up, so the person has to be ok with removal of small cobwebs and the appearance of the occasional spider. Really pleasant environment, location is off of Montrose near Damen. If interested, please email danielasfacialstudio@gmail.com.

Any idea when the water will be back on at Granville Beach?

Went to get my mail around noon and there was a literal waterfall coming out of the ceiling in the lobby. The picture doesn't show the true niagra falls of water that was flowing.

  • It was freezing and we bought this window seal kit from Lowe’s, which did wonders...and a space heater. Most of the cold came through the Ac vents and a lot came in through the windows, I think cause they’re old.

  • Yeah we covered up all our air conditioning vents with thick plastic. I just carry a space heater at this point from room to room. I will definitely try the window seal kit! And my water is back on but it is brown so I will let it run for awhile. Thank you for the great tips! xLaura

Hi Wazzup, the east-west runways are new since 2015. And planes now drop altitude and fly very low once they are past the obstacles of lakefront high-rises. Therefore aircraft noise was recently shifted to neighborhoods, where it was never a concern. Planes are now landing on the new Wilson aligned and Berteau aligned runways opened to replace O'Hare's longstanding diagonal runways. Planes are at a pretty high altitude along the lake because of building height, so you don't experience the noise neighbors west of you are upset about. Planes drop to 1,000', then lower about 1200 west. I too have state-of-the-art insulation and super insulated windows. What you have isn't adequate if you live in a neighborhood west of the lakefront with shorter buildings, where planes fly much lower.

Airplane Noise During Fly Quiet Hours: Are we Still Reporting It ?

So tired, two nights in a row woken up at 4:08 and kept awake til after 5 by loud jets flying over - same volume as during the past two days. I understand the new flight pattern trials are going on but this is too much ! Previous two days it was 11:30 to 12:30 am and starting up at 5 am. Hard to guess when to turn my sound generating machine on as we recently had 4 am theft in area ,don't want to be unaware. Are we still supposed to be reporting jet noise thesame

  • Yes, please do report it. Fly Quiet provisions are not mandates for air traffic, just suggestions. We need to make it clear that the runway rotation and Fly Quiet as it stands are not enough to mitigate noise.

  • Thank you for posting about this, Alice. The same thing happened to me and unfortunately I just cannot sleep with anything that blocks out normal sound. I'm an early riser but 4 AM is too early.

  • Report at www.chicagonoisecomplaint.com or call 311. . Heading toward 5 million noise complaints in 2017. let each of your elected officials know they need to work on controlling the O'Hare aircraft noise and air pollution problem.

Panhandles

There’s to many Panhandles on the Bryn Mawr strip !! And I know they’re not homeless !

I figure that it's their karma, not mine, if a 'panhandlers' doesn't genuinely need the money. Any reason that compels someone to stand outside for hours in all weather asking for money suggests they have a problem - whether it's financial, mental disorder, or even lack of character. In any of those scenarios, the person is troubled.

I would also caution that just because someone is not homeless, it doesn't mean they're not in desperate financial trouble. Maybe they need the proceeds from psnhadling to help pay their rent.

The one panhandler I really wonder about is the guy on southeast corner of Ridge and Clark. He seems to be there every day. Anyone know his story?

  • Don

Month after month year after year they panhandle for rent. Seriously

The Philadelphia Church question on N. Clark

Hi Andersonville. There's a church at 5437 N. Clark, next door there looks like a thrift shop but I never see it open. Would anyone know if there is a next door thrift store and what the hours are? (BTW, the church never replies to questions)

Development Proposal Calls For Demolition Of Sheridan Road Mansion Housing Wing Hoe Restaurant

The Edgewater community once saw long blocks of beautiful lakefront mansions along Sheridan Road. Unfortunately, most of these properties were demolished through the past half century to make way for multi-unit developments. Now, one of the last surviving area mansions is in jeopardy as a new development proposal calls for its demise. The century-old building at […]

Of course there is a difference. Doesnt mean somethings "demise or survival would probably be negligible" to them.

I still work my magic on christmas no need to thank me!

  • I'd be really sad to see it go. It's kind of a landmark, and so unique to Chicago. I wasn't crazy about the food the one time I ate there, but I always loved the look of the place.
