Black & White Cat in our yard

This black & white cat came around today, hanging around our feral cats and caterwauling. It's fairly large and appears well fed, and it really wasn't interested in our cats' food. No ear tipping, so definitely not a registered feral cat, but still skittish of humans. Other than the fact that it's significantly larger than our male-neutered feral cats, I'm inclined to suspect it's a female in heat due to the excessive caterwauling and following our male-neutered feral cats around,...

If this is your cat, please let me know, otherwise we'll contact Treehouse to try and trap it before any more unwanted kittens are conceived.

There's two of them! I'd like to know more about them. A friend thinks I should call a rescue place to make sure they will be neutered.

Graffiti/tagging?

I found some graffiti or possible tagging on the fence of our building today--not too legible in the dark but I'll try again tomorrow. Anyone else a target of this around Hollywood and Glenwood?

A neighbor saw this graffiti all along our block when leaving, but it was gone on their return this afternoon. Could 311 work that quickly???

BEWARE!! Coyote sighting ON 1.17.2018

I witnessed a coyote walk east on the south side of Hollywood, cross the street to the north side, and walk the sidewalk West towards Clark.. 911 was called.

  • Phill Lucille, give me strength.

Great post. Coyotes may have rabies or mange and attack your pets.
    Be safe.

  • Let alone Animal Control, try calling 311 for anything and it takes hours( if you are lucky enough ), to get any results.

TJ did the right thing by calling 911, because all essential services get moving Pronto !, when they are called directly by a 911 operator.

Sad state of affairs, but that is the way it is.

Car break-in with no theft

Sometime last night or early this morning, our car was broken into and the glove box ransacked, but nothing appears to have been taken. We could have sworn we locked the doors, but they were all unlocked. Apparently, the same thing happened to a neighbor. Anyone else! This is near Glenwood and Winnemac.

We had something similar happen a couple weeks ago, also thinking we had locked the doors but assumed we must not have. Again, nothing that we can tell was taken.

If thieves are doing that to determine if folks are home, not sure if that’s the smartest plan. We have garages, so while one car may have to park on the street most people around have a couple cars and one will always be on the street and one in a garage or parking space for the building. There have also been times when we’ve had to park a block or two away, so unless they’re continually doing a sweep it’s hard to be certain that folks aren’t home.

"Artie": you "assumed" that because someone is homeless they can't move mattresses themselves-how do u think they got there? fell off a train?
Bubbles: there are numerous things that disrupt our public lives every day-construction, rehabs, sewer work, construction, cubs games and cubs construction. When u live in the big city u should deal with it and not complain about someone who is trying to EXIST.

  • You're starting your political career and future bid on alderman right. All compassion with no plan to deal with difficult problems.

Shall we designate the area in front of your home/building as a safe haven for the homeless? Doesn't sound like you would mind and it sure doesn't sound like you would be inconvenienced by it.

To give context, we chose A-American to install a granite countertop we bought from them in a second bathroom. The granite is beautiful and the installation went smoothly.

Years later we hired a contractor to redo our main bathroom. We bought the granite from a place our contractor recommended (I can’t remember the name of the place-it was in the western suburbs), and our contractor installed it. The installation did not go as smoothly. There was some slight damage to the drywall that the contractor had to repair. Nothing major, but it showed us that A-American really knew their business.

They have a location on Irving Park and Kedzie. http://www.aamericanflooring.com/aamerican/a-american-custom-flooring-locations

I second A-American! I have referred them to several clients and they always impress! They are top in their field. Many developers use them also. They also have a very nice selection of granites. And what is really fun is you can go to the warehouse and pick out the slab your granite comes from! But if you prefer quartz, they have plenty. Just west of Kenzie on the south side of Irving Park Rd.

This winter CACC has rapidly approached its maximum dog population. Can you help? Have you thought about adopting a pooch? Here's the opportunity for you (with some financial incentives) and a new life for a sadly caged dog. See:

Two Chicago aldermen want to limit release of condo owners' personal information
Two Chicago aldermen who represent most of downtown want to reverse a state law that makes condo owners' personal information more widely available to their fellow association members. A proposal introduced this week by Aldermen Brian Hopkins and Brendan Reilly would allow association boards to limit the release of owners' names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and weighted votes in Chicago condo buildings and complexes.
    http://www.chicagotribune.com
  • Wazzup not available

being able to contact neighbors in an emergency - like flooding from above - is important. Not every condo has a manager on site - and not every condo has a contact person at night. This ordinance is important and will be appreciated when an emergency arises. There could be an exception for those condos with 24 hour on site contact -like manager or doorman.

  • Some smaller condo associations automatically distribute a list of telephone numbers to all residents for that purpose. This is different and was supposedly quietly stuck into another proposed Condominium Act change. I understand that several state senators and representatives are already starting to work on repealing that one part of the change.

Lincoln Towing Stokes Again

The much deservedly maligned Lincoln Towing decided the best way to close out 2017 was to illegally tow a moving van packed with belongings and to make that burn a double their personal car too.

The incident occurred close to Broadway Lawrence...thank you Alderman Pawar for keeping up the pressure on LT. At least someone in the city council is paying attention.

Since at least mid-December the SE corner of Paulina at Ainslie has been taped off as a Tow Zone, supposedly by the Dept of Streets and Sanitation. However, no work nor workers have been spotted a single time. But I do have reason to believe that this is being abused...

The sign posted currently reads, “No Parking-Tow Zone 7a - 11pm through 1/30/18” yet more often than not a lone Dept of Streets & Sani truck is parked inside the Tow Zone at all hours. There has also been a dark red minivan spotted parked there, also in the Tow Zone, also during the listed times. I’ve done a little Google sleuthing and have reason to believe that this is occurring directly in front of a house in which an employee of the Dept of Streets & Sani lives.

In my 15 years in this city I’ve never once seen street work being done in a residential neighborhood at 11pm...

This may all be coincidence, but with how difficult it is to park on this street and the city that we live in, I thought I’d stir the pot and see what was cooking.

Smells awfully fishy to me.

  • So I contacted the alderman's office and here was the responce:

So I contacted the alderman's office and here was the responce:

Thanks for your email. There is an active permit in the city's system for the Dept. of Water Management to repair a defective buffalo box in the parkway there at 4895 N. Paulina. They had an initial dig date on the permit of 12/1 and then it was moved to 12/26. I know that DWM has been grappling with the number of leaks and frozen water services that popped up during the cold snap, and I suspect that this delayed them coming to perform this repair which isn't as critical as someone without water.

Your neighbor's name is Erick Norton and he is the 47th Ward Superintendent. He coordinates garbage pickup, snow removal, and sanitation code enforcement here in the ward. He is one of 50 such superintendent's in the City of Chicago. I asked him about this and he reported that he was having low water pressure in his home and put a request in to have the city inspect. When they did, DWM found the defective buffalo box and put the item in the queue for repairs.

I will reach out to DWM today to see if I can get a more concrete timetable. I will also see about having the signs taken down unless they plan to be there shortly.

    --------

PrinceRobot again. This still doesn't really seem right to me. I've followed up in terms of the time table and sent a few snaps just to prove my point. To be fair, since I started this thread dude has not been parking there. So maybe he's already paying attention?

Yesterday's death at the Bryn Mawr Red Line stop?

Hi, neighbors -- I'm just curious if any of you know more details about the man who was hit by the train and died yesterday. The Sun Times names him as "52-year-old James Dillen" -- but that's it. https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/red-purple-line-trains-shut-down-person-removed-from-tracks-at-bryn-mawr/ Does anyone know any more about the circumstances, or about Mr. Dillen?

Thanks,

52-year-old man fatally struck by CTA train at Bryn Mawr
Normal service resumed on the CTA Red and Purple lines about two hours after a person jumped in front of a train Friday morning in the North Side Edgewater neighborhood, according to police. The man jumped in front of the train just after 7 a.m.

I just feel like the word troubled has negative connotations attatched to it. We never say a person who suffers from a physical illness is troubled. Troubled is usually attatched to people with mental issues not physical.you know people who have behavioral issues are often labeled as troubled. Behavioral issues are generally due to mental health issues. Its a controversial subject.

Hello Neighbors - I've owned my home for 22 years on Paulina between Montrose and Wilson. It seems, particularly over the past few years, the use of salt on the public sidewalks - not just by multi-unit buildings and businesses - but also by homeowners has increased dramatically. As the owner of a dog that I walk twice a day for 40 minutes each time, I'm finding it impossible to get through a walk without my dog coming up lame from salt burns on his paw pads at least 6 times each walk - sometimes even more. Don't get me wrong, salt can be useful on those rare occasions when we have a glaze ice situation or when melting snow suddenly re-freezes. But to simply throw down piles of salt to avoid shoveling or - for whatever reason - throwing it down after shoveling, just doesn't make sense or is just a sign of laziness. As an example, after the last snow event, not a single grain of salt was used by the homeowners on the north half of the block, and yet the sidewalks have been and continue to be perfectly clear following conscientious shoveling or snowblowing by my neighbors. In fact, our sidewalks are actually clearer than many of the sidewalks where we have to dodge the piles of salt that remain day after day after application. In fact, with plunging temps so often coming immediately after snow events, as most people know, salt dramatically loses its effectiveness - yet it lingers on sidewalks for weeks.

Some might say "can't the dogs just wear those booties"? No. While some dogs will tolerate them the majority of dogs refuse to wear them and just push them off their paws.

I ask that homeowners - as well as tenants/condo owners, please ask your snow removal service or superintendent - to seriously limit the use of salt to those situations where it is genuinely needed and is actually effective. And please, do not throw it down just to avoid actually removing snow.

Thank for listening.

I've lived here for15 years and I always shovel in a timely manner after even the smallest amount of snow. Other posters are correct: There isn't anything I can do about snow that drifts and melts overnight and creates an ice skating rink on the front concrete. I do have a dog and do spent the extra on the expensive pet safe salt because leaving the ice on my front parkway so my elderly neighbors, my mail person, and any other passersby fall and break something isn't an option. Do you know what is an option? Twice daily trips to the Foster Beach Dog Park.

I agree that calling 311 to report those who don't shovel is import. What you're asking is just entitled whining.

Many a warm summer night was spent there with a burger and a beer...or two..or three...

One of the reasons Moody's beer garden became so popular was that it was all-ages: you could bring the family and eat outside. Also, the bar indoors was very dark--and, before anti-smoking ordinances were enacted--smoky as hell. So the outdoors became a refuge from smokers too--people still smoked outside, but they could wave the smoke away. (And you & they could see each other and move to a different table).

I never knew any other Moody's but the one on B'way. I know it's not the end of an era, but it's always sad when a person who established something beloved passes away. May his memory be for a blessing,

Anyone have updates/insight on when our new Andersonville restaurants are opening?
Hutch opened pretty quickly and we've already had a tasty dinner there!

Eagerly awating:

And any news on possibilities for the spaces that were Brixton (I miss their steak tartare and chicken pate!) and Adriatica?
