Log Cabin Republican Calls Police on Wrong Woman

In what appears to be another case of calling the police because someone is Black, Morry Matson, Log Cabin Republican candidate for Edgewater's Mayor, has a lot of explaining to do. His last claim to fame was promoting a multi-million dollar carnival boardwalk in front of lots of people's homes and cutting off their unobstructed views of the lake.

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/black-woman-says-cvs-manager-called-police-because-she-had-wrong-coupon/

Black woman says CVS manager called police because she had wrong coupon
Camilla Hudson wanted to use a manufacturer's coupon at CVS on North Broadway on Friday night, but a manager who said he'd never seen a coupon like that called the police, she said in a Facebook post. "So, THIS just happened: I had the police called on me for attempting to use a coupon @ the CVS Pharmacy located at 6150 N.

Andrew -- just last week I tried to use a coupon and it didn't go through right away. The clerk tried to scan it several times and it finally went through. Nobody accused me of forgery. In fact, I've never been accused of trying to present a fake coupon and I'm not young. The odds would seem to be that at some point in my 50+ years somebody would have questioned me.

Also, it doesn't sound like the two men at the story even tried to "put it through." Excerpt from story:

"Hudson shared a video and explanation on Facebook. She said the coupon was sent to her by a product manufacturer because her product had been defective. The manager on duty at CVS had never seen the coupon before and said he thought it was fraudulent."

  • The important result is that CVS did the right thing. They publicly honored their customer, disciplined (fired) two employees for improper behavior on the job and preserved their reputation in the community. Matson's reputation was not damaged because it was less than commendable to begin with.

  • There may have been some confusion with another northside alderman. Osterman hasn't declared yet and records show he didn't raise a dime in the last 3 months.

  • Maybe if something is repeated to one's self often enough, one starts to believe it?

Strip Mall Preservation

The current vacant strip mall at 4600 N. Magnolia

    Strip Mall Preservation
Disappointing (or joyous) news depending which side of "strip mall preservation" you are on. According to Ald. Cappleman's ward development page, the owner of the mostly vacant strip mall at 4600 N. Magnolia that was slated for a five-story transit oriented development, and was given approval by the local block club, is not moving forward.

Uptown's Sad Bike Lanes

We in Uptown have the ifnoble distinction of having the only bike lane the biking community rejects.

As both a pedestrian and a bike rider, I really appreciate the dedicated lane, especially under the bridge. I can't control cars and most don't pay attention. I do feel safe separated from vehicle traffic. I travel under the bridge almost every day now and can say for certain, everyone uses the right path here.

On a separate note, I noticed the new bike only lanes are up and running in the park. I do hope there is much more effort to create signage and educate the public on which lane to use for what. Currently I see the speed demons still almost colliding with pedestrians on the walking path and I see pedestrians literally just standing around on the bike only path.
