Plumber Recommendations

I live in a 5 story 1920s condo building with 10 units. There are a total of 4 plumbing riser stacks (galvanized) in the building. We have these risers routed out every year. Our contractor is recommending we route the risers twice a year now.

I am looking for recommendations for reputable plumbers with experience in vintage buildings. We are interested in getting professional opinions on such topics as:

1. Should we even be routing the pipes given their age and potential frailty?
2. Is power flushing a better option to routing?
3. What is remaining useful life and potential approaches to replacement?

Thanks much for any and all suggestions!

  • Power Plumbing will give you a straight, complete answer before they do anything, They are not only the best plumbers in the city, they are the best in all the trades.

  • Thank you North Center guy! We appreciate the endorsement!

Obamacare Is Shrinking the Individual Health Insurance Market

To start with, they confirm that, by driving up premiums for coverage, Obamacare is increasingly driving unsubsidized customers out of the individual market.
What is less clear is where those customers have gone.
It is likely that most of the customers who exited the market are middle-income, since they don’t qualify for Obamacare’s low-income premium subsidies, and self-employed, since they had been buying their own health insurance.
Some may have given up on self-employment and obtained jobs with employer-sponsored health insurance. If so, then Obamacare has made the phenomenon of “job lock” worse, not better.

  • This is utter nonsense. The Affordable Care Act is not shrinking the insurance market, Republicans are doing it. Unable to muster the votes to repeal it after years of bragging they would do so, they have hamstrung the Act in every way possible, by removing funding, repealing the individual mandate, etc. This is an ad masquerading as news and it is offensive.

Welles Park Dog Park?

Thinking Welles Park needs a dog park or signs can't let your dog off leash and someone to ticket. Every morning on baseball diamonds and today we have a party of 5 dogs off leash with owners chatting. Was hoping to cut through park but will go around.

  • I couldn't agree more Cubs. My dog is always on a leash and I deal with this at Winnemac park regularly. Dogs off leash approach my dog as I'm walking him and if they run up to us, he feels threatened. (His eyesight is not great anymore). I would much prefer there were a fence around the unofficial dog park that's formed there so we all can enjoy the park.

  • The police don't always coordinate with the Park District management. This problem has to be addressed with the park supervisor. If you don't know who that is, go to the Chicago Park District website and look it up or click on CONTACT US on the home page and leave your complaint there.

Possible casing of homes in Northcenter

When I asked him (through the window), "Can I help you?", he said he was "supposed to be meeting the landlord about an apartment for rent and was late". I asked him who he was supposed to meet. He said he didn't know the "guy's name" and so feeling like this was fishy, I asked him how much the apartment was renting for, he didn't know that either.

He was on the shorter side - 5'8"-ish with a slight build, was wearing a red plaid pattern long sleeve shirt, had pretty weathered skin with a tattoo (some kind of writing) above his left eyebrow, was missing several teeth, and was carrying a backpack.

I told him that I didn't know anything about any available apartments and he left with no issues, but the whole thing left me feeling like he was casing the joint, so to speak. FYI - he never rang my bell (don't know if he rang my neighbors). He came and went through the gangway to the alley.

According to my landlord, there was no appointment.
This happened on the 1900 West block of Belle Plaine Ave today (5/8) at 1:40pm.

  • Way. I did call them today and told them that I saw the article, and that it was the same man that I had reported to 3-1-1. They said they didn't need the info after the fact but reinforced that I should call 9-1-1 next time anything like this occurs (which I will do because admittedly the whole incident has been really unnerving).

  • angelranger 47 year Northside resident

That's good news and a succesful conclusion to an EB neighborhood watch support session. Sometimes we are surrounded with so much 'not normal' behavior that we start to think abnormal is normal. In the end common sense and perhaps primal instinct are first alerts over our compromised view of reality. But casing is casing no matter what time of day or colors. Theft is theft no matter if "the landlord said I could borrow it" or not. Good job 3Kranch!

Vine maintenance

Hi neighbors, we have a vine-covered building that we're trying to maintain. We don't want to completely get rid of the vines, but we would like them to stay healthy. Can anyone recommend a service that would help with this? It's a 3 story building and the vines go to the top. At the very least I'd like them to be trimmed away from the windows (they are murder on the screens!) but I'm thinking we'll need professional help.

  • Vines are like ladders for ants to crawl in your unit

  • If you have a brick building, vines are the worst thing you could do. Vines eat away at the mortar and tuckpointing. Can completely ruin the masonry over time. Be prepared for the expense of re-tuckpointing if you continue to allow vines to grow on your building.

Hi there Ellen. I share the same concerns as you when it comes to the loss of mom and pop stores in our neighborhood. I do want to point out that the cost of rent can actually be cheaper for retailers in a TOD than a building that requires more parking.

With a TOD, the developer has more rentable space than with a building with parking which does not have as much return on sq/ft. In turn they have less pressure to charge higher rents to make up the difference. I think Southport is losing mom and pop stores since national chains can pay more.

The street is a victim of it's own success.

Let us know what you end up doing. Hysterical in regards to people not wanting to do anything. In my 7 unit, it’s me as a treasurer, the oldest guy in the building as President, and the next oldest guys (who are selling) doing it all. Beyond that the rest fall off the face of the earth.
