New City - Safe and Peaceful Communities

In May 2018 The Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities has awarded AWOFINC a 2018 grant, one of 132 rapid-response grants to support activities that promote safe and peaceful conditions in 19 prioritized Chicago communities. AWOFINC's Parent Information & Resouces, Violence Prevention Consortium and Youth Leadership & Development initiatives seek to identify and establish Community-Based Participatory Partnerships with groups and organizations. The consortium will be actively engaging multiple communities. Man charged with string of armed robberies in Back of the Yards

In the 1400 block of West 49th Place on March 26 at about 6:10 a.m.

In the 1200 block of West 49th Place on March 30 at about 7:20 p.m.

In the 4900 block of South Racine Avenue on April 3 at about 8:40 p.m.

Henson lives in the 1100 block of West 50th Street, blocks from the robberies, according to police. He was due in bond court Wednesday.

Henson was arrested Tuesday in the 4600 Block of South Halsted Street for retail theft and was linked to three armed robberies in Back of the Yards, police said:

    A man with a long criminal record of theft and gun charges has been arrested for a string of armed robberies in the Back of the Yards neighborhood since late last month, according to Chicago police. Jeffon Henson, 30, has been charged with three felony counts of armed robbery with a gun and one misdemeanor count of retail theft.

Volunteer English (ESL) Literacy Tutors Needed!

Help adults learn English at Aquinas Literacy Center!
Volunteer as a one-on-one tutor for just 90 minutes a week at 1751 West 35th Street on the southwest side of Chicago. All tutoring is in English, so you don't have to speak another language to volunteer. Volunteer tutoring opportunities are 9am-8pm, Monday-Thursday.

Join us for our next tutor training workshop: Friday, April 27 (6pm to 9pm) and Saturday, April 28 (9am to 4pm). Attendance on both days is required to become a tutor. Please register in advance.
