So, everyone in Canaryville is a racist, or according to you, was one back then? Check! Says more about your character, and now has me ignoring anything else you add to the conversation. As someone who was born and raised in Canaryville and has parents who were also born and raised in Canaryville, I can tell you that your statement is false and not worthy of any more attention. Have a great day being that "victim" you speak of.

Why no Venues for Blues, Gospel fest on Southside and Westside

You have venues on Northside and Downtown, what is the deal here? This has to stop, we like entertainment as much as the next person. Are our tax dollars being used to finance others entertainment?

What can I do?

Heard 15-20 shots and saw 5 adult males brandishing guns on the 47 block of Ellis Saturday morning (approx 330am). Called 911 and the operator hung up on me. Do people really not care about the Southside that much???

Spend Where You Live

I am proposing to Bronzeville residents that for one day out of the week we spend in our community as not only a way to demonstrate our purchasing power, but to contribute to the growth of home buisnesses who thought enough of us to invest with us.
-
We need to start the conversation, reestablishing our community becomes more paramount each day. It seems our welcome has worn out and our dollars are not welcome in certain areas. The answer and only answer is get OUR community back.
-
We are being judged not by the content of our character but by the color of our skin, the time is long past that we readdress establishing our community for our own welfare and salvation and financial growth. Once we start funneling our dollars here in Bronzeville and other predominately African American businesses then we become less dependent and start the process of Wealth building right here.

Car Crashes Into Multiple Parked cars on S Indiana

A car crashed into multiple parked cars around 1 am last night on S Indiana, between 44th & 45th. I heard the sound of the crash but it took a few minutes to realize what had happened. 2 occupants of the car were arguing loudly. Police were called and showed up in 5 minutes. If you live on this block, you might want to check your car!

Free Trees!

Hi Neighbors,
In case you weren't aware, you can get FREE trees for your street from the city or working with a non-profit called Openlands. If it’s just one or a few trees then make a request through 311. If your street has open spots for 10+ trees then apply for a grant from Openlands. More details below.
For one or just a few trees, go through the city’s 311 online system (search tree planting) or call 311:

Hi Neighbors,

For one or just a few trees, go through the city’s 311 online system (search tree planting) or call 311:
https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/311.html
It takes time for requests to get fulfilled. My request took a couple of years before I got a call and something happened.
When I talked to one of the guys who runs tree planting for the city he said they plant trees based on demand. If no requests are made, no trees get planted. Be specific with your requests. For example, one tree at the curb outside XXXX S Calumet. The number of trees the city plants depends on the budget for the year. If the budget doesn’t cover the full list for the city (typical), then the list rolls over to the next year.
If you have space for 10+ trees then apply for a grant from Openlands:
https://openlands.org/trees/treeplanters-grants/
They will plant on city public land. Public land is considered to be the parkways between the curb and the sidewalk in front of residential houses, CPS school property, and some vacant lots. You need to organize a group of volunteers to help with planting. For example, neighbors, school group, church group, block club, etc.
Last Fall our group of neighbors planted 40 trees on two blocks in the neighborhood. It was a nice neighborhood event and a great way to fill in empty spots along the street that were missing trees.
Make the South Side even more beautiful!

I am once again protesting Everyblock's increasing censorship of perfectly legal, positive posts. I posted a link to the tragic shooting of an unarmed Black AA man in Sacramento CA and noted that it looked like the police acted improperly. I linked to a very positive informational video from FlexYourRights.org providing very practical advice how to avoid and survive hostile police encounters. I also linked to the City Hall protest where the deceased brothers and others through temper tantrums and behaved in inappropriate ways that discredited their legitimate grievances. Why was this censored? This censorship seems to me the same as when Everyblock censored my comments noting that some Simeon High School students ransacked the local Wall Mart in the national walk out protests over gun violence. What happened to our 1st Amendment rights to just suggest that our young people should not riot, loot stores and should try to avoid hostile police encounters by acting in a calm and reasonable way? Do we want our young people to riot - engage in behavior that will lead to very dangerous encounters with police or armed citizens? What's going on?

Is it safe around the 47th Red Line station at 11 pm - 12 am?

For a few weeks, I will have to get off the Red Line and get on bus 47 (and vice versa) between 11 pm and 12 am. How safe (or not safe) is that area for someone to be standing around waiting for the train/bus?
-
@MeeLee - I meant not having your phone out walking around with your nose buried in it and headphones blaring - vs doing a quick check for the bus. As far as the attackers, actually, a lot of these instances are happening at the hands of teens ... skinny little pipsqueaks barely 160 pounds who never had a father to teach them you shouldn't rob people.
-
Ah, ok. Not glued to phone. Gotcha. :) I’m not intending to walk around anywhere farther than the train station and bus stop.
I’m 120 lbs but I think I’ll be pretty good at whacking a 160-lb guy. Must bring whacker.

Censorship on Everyblock - Common Sense Education/cultural reforms are needed

I am making a complaint about censorship on Everyblock. I made an intelligent post opposing the worst forms of Rap music in the Chicago Public Schools and on Grammy and other awards shows. I advocating teaching our young people time tested standards of decency, promoting traditional education and positive music and culture.

I am making a complaint about censorship on Everyblock. I made an intelligent post opposing the worst forms of Rap music in the Chicago Public Schools and on Grammy and other awards shows. I advocating teaching our young people time tested standards of decency, promoting traditional education and positive music and culture.
Pretty much every successful adult I meet of all racial and ethnic groups agrees with these positions, and yet we are the ones who are censored, not the worst, most violent, hateful rap "Musicians".
This #*$&*# isn't even music as few rap "musicians" know how to play instruments or read music.
I'll support any Christian pastor, ex military veteran, grandmother from the South anybody that can step in and give our young people some positive direction in life - Catholic Nuns used to wash students mouths out with soap for using the vile language I hear in almost every single rap song - and this music seems to be infecting every part of society. When will it end? How long to the Bubonic plague in Europe last?

@jaye - Are you saying there's a radical Islamic serial killer on the loose killing gay people? I'm not at all saying you're wrong, just asking for your evidence? If he/they were truly Islamic radicals, I'd imagine they'd do something similar to the Pulse nightclub incident ... not running around in the shadows like they're Jack the Ripper.

No this is way bigger than me having a show to go to, when you promote the City and you place venues in only certain parts of the City, they reap the benefits and profits that are combined with that. Also these are things to do for those communities that are from a general tourism budget which includes revenue from across the City, Red Light ticket, parking tickets, etc.,etc., So if you can have this on streets on the Northside, and Downtown....... then what is wrong with expecting this to be on a westside street, or a south side street.
