New City - Safe and Peaceful Communities

In May 2018 The Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities has awarded AWOFINC a 2018 grant, one of 132 rapid-response grants to support activities that promote safe and peaceful conditions in 19 prioritized Chicago communities. AWOFINC's Parent Information & Resouces, Violence Prevention Consortium and Youth Leadership & Development initiatives seek to identify and establish Community-Based Participatory Partnerships with groups and organizations. The consortium will be actively engaging multiple communities. Chopper 2 flew over the scene as firefighters from the air and on the ground tried to contain the 2-alarm blaze. The fire happened at Root and Wallace in the Canaryville neighborhood.

Extra-alarm fire hits South Side pallet company

An extra-alarm fire hit a Canaryville neighborhood pallet company at 550 W. Root St. on May 7, 2018.

John Dziennik, 53, was inside his home Monday evening when the power suddenly went off and he heard sirens outside. He went outside and saw flames coming from the pallet company on the northeast corner of Root and Wallace streets.

    An extra-alarm fire hit a Canaryville neighborhood pallet company Monday night but was brought under control within an hour, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The fire at 550 W. Root St., which city business license information lists as B & S Pallet Corp., started a little after 7 p.m.

Volunteer English (ESL) Literacy Tutors Needed!

Help adults learn English at Aquinas Literacy Center!
Volunteer as a one-on-one tutor for just 90 minutes a week at 1751 West 35th Street on the southwest side of Chicago. All tutoring is in English, so you don't have to speak another language to volunteer. Volunteer tutoring opportunities are 9am-8pm, Monday-Thursday.

Join us for our next tutor training workshop: Friday, April 27 (6pm to 9pm) and Saturday, April 28 (9am to 4pm). Attendance on both days is required to become a tutor. Please register in advance.     He's cooked for Bill Veeck and hung out with Tony La Russa, played cards with the 1983 "Winning Ugly" team and celebrated with the 2005 world champions. For 42 straight White Sox seasons, chef Roy Rivas has cooked for the team in ballparks old and new at the corner of 35th and Shields.

Water Meter Installation 2018 Update

After getting this water meter installed in 2014, I really wanted it to be a ripoff, like most other city services. But after four years of water bills, I can safely say that unless you're emptying Lake Michigan every time you shower, a metered account is a better deal. If you're on the fence, just do it.

    Water Meter Installation Update - 2018
    Four years after the installation of my water meter, the half-yearly charges are less than a quarter of what they were when I was being billed for non-metered water. It's a great deal, as long as you keep the bill paid on time, which, of course, you do with all your bills.
