Ex-tanning salon owner to be sentenced for raping employee in 2009

Marc Winner, 47, was convicted May 1 on two charges of sexual assault in connection with a 2009 rape. Sentencing proceedings will start Tuesday afternoon at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse at 2650 S. California Ave.

George Leighton, Chicago judge for whom criminal courthouse is named, dies at 105

He also served on the federal bench as a U.S. District Court judge for more than 10 years. Cook County’s main criminal courthouse at 26th Street and California Avenue — where Leighton began his judicial career — was named in his honor in 2012.

Leighton, who retired from the federal bench in 1987 when he was 74, had been hospitalized for pneumonia at a Brockton, Mass., veterans hospital, said Langdon Neal, managing member of Neal & Leroy, where Leighton worked until he was 99.

The criminal courthouse at 26th Street and California Avenue is named after him. He went to Harvard Law School and was a World War II veteran.

    Chicago judge George Leighton died of pneumonia at the age of 105 on Wednesday. Leighton was hospitalized at a Massachusetts veterans hospital for pneumonia, according to the Chicago Tribune. He was the first African American to sit on the Illinois Appellate Court. Leighton also ruled from the county and federal benches.

We are presenting an exhibit- “About Discrimination".
The Liz Long gallery at Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center, 1957 S. Spaulding Ave. Chicago Illinois 60623 is displaying materials to increase awareness of discrimination and the ism's.
This is an excellent opportunity for a discussion on Discrimination. Any group that schedules an appt. to visit can ask for a facilitated discussion. We will provide this for free.
People can view the display on Saturdays between 1-4p.m. during June or email us to ask for a special showing for themselves and/or their group.
The exhibit is on display through June 30.

Residents awake to shooting; 10 more follow Sunday and Monday: 'On a church day?'

Around 9 a.m. police were called to the 700 block of N. Trumbull Avenue on the West Side for a report of shots fired.

He was traveling north in the 2600 block of Lake Shore Drive in a white Jeep Cherokee when someone fired at him from a black sedan. He drove to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was stabilized.

First, a 21-year-old man was shot in the neck, face and back while on foot in the 8200 block of South Wentworth Avenue in the West Chatham neighborhood around 10:50 p.m., police said. A witness told officers that a group of males were running near the crime scene after the shooting.

Around 11:05 p.m., a 32-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 6200 block of South Vernon Avenue in the West Woodlawn neighborhood when a male shooter approached him and fired shots, hitting him in the leg.

Around 3:05 a.m. Monday, a 29-year-old man was shot in the back in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. He was on foot in the 5600 block of South Princeton Avenue when someone fired at him from inside a black SUV. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

A 37-year-old man was standing outside around 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1800 block of South Farrar Drive in the West Side’s Douglas Park neighborhood when he heard gunshots and realized he was shot in the calf, police said. He took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was in good condition.
