Record Row ... NOT Motor Row

As more and more development and investment continues to flood the South Loop area, I can't help but wonder if anyone will discuss Record Row -- the TRUE identity of what everyone seems to want to brand "Motor Row."

"Record Row" is the more relevant history for this area of Chicago. If the powers that be were smart, the strip along Michigan near McCormick's new 'Entertainment District' should really become a cultural corridor for Chicago, celebrating the historical Jazz and Blues contributions that line that entire strip. Nashville has Broadway Street ... New Orleans has Bourbon Street .... why on earth doesn't Chicago have something similar????

There's a great documentary on this strip if anyone is interested.

    Record Row
    Record Row - Was produced by WTTW in Chicago (PBS) and aired in February 1997. I happened to tape it. Lost my tape a few months ago and then discoved that Record Row had disappeared from the earth more or less. Found one copy in a small college's library somewhere in the south but not available for loan.

    I feel once we are past the negative perceptions of the area and truly embrace the great history of Bronzeville we will be rewarded in ways that are innumerable, if and when the resources are put in the promotion of what happened here. As a people we have never excluded even as we were not included. What concerns me is that this should be on the front of the consideration of the tourism bureau's investment portfolio, lets consider this area as an asset and as something to present to the World for celebration.If you can have art festivals, rib festivals and so on in the North side neighborhoods, why not have these festivals in the Southside venues.

  • The History and the greatness of Bronzeville is what we have to preserve, if we let this area become anything other than an Historical area then we have lost a great treasure.

AMAZON provided a $200 gift card for my favorite charity - which will be one of the silent auction items for CADC fundraiser on Wed. March 7 from 6 to 9 at Mayslake. Will wonders never cease? SYD's laying down because she's tired of this game. She's been waiting for days - but even SYD got a $25 gift certificate reward for dog treats on AMAZON. Doing the right thing - not keeping the packages as many suggested but getting them back to go to their rightful owners still is the way to go - PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF! Suggestions for Block of Land For Sale

Hi Neighbors. We noticed that there is a for sale sign at a parking lot on the 2100 Block of South Indiana (adjacent to The Lex and across from the Wintrust Arena). Our community needs a full grocery store and a pharmacy. Any suggestions regarding how we can encourage these types of businesses into our developing neighborhood?

    @Douglas_Peep,
    Yes, I was being a little cheeky about Ickes happening, but I have been attending meetings for years now and still not a shovel in the ground yet. Conversely, the new South Loop Elementary was approved long after the Ickes plans and that is going up at a furious pace. While I believe something will go up at Ickes, I think people and the politicians are ambivalent about it. It would not surprise me at all to see a reduction in the final number of public and affordable units.
    As for a casino, it baffles me that the city just watches people cross the border 12 miles from our neighborhood and contribute to the State of Indiana. I have little doubt campaign contributions flow from those connected to our city officials to kill such an idea. Given the history of Ickes, I doubt a casino would ever go in on that site.

  • Ickes still planned - go through some design iterations and approvals. Being multi jurisdictional entities and involving federal $$ takes time https://chicago.curbed.com/2017/2/6/14522750/chicago-ickes-homes-redevelopment-plan-public-housing
