Spend Where You Live

I am proposing to Bronzeville residents that for one day out of the week we spend in our community as not only a way to demonstrate our purchasing power, but to contribute to the growth of home buisnesses who thought enough of us to invest with us.

  • We need to start the conversation, reestablishing our community becomes more paramount each day. It seems our welcome has worn out and our dollars are not welcome in certain areas. The answer and only answer is get OUR community back.

  • We are being judged not by the content of our character but by the color of our skin, the time is long past that we readdress establishing our community for our own welfare and salvation and financial growth. Once we start funneling our dollars here in Bronzeville and other predominately African American businesses then we become less dependent and start the process of Wealth building right here.

Italian eats: Chicago's 6 best spots for budget-friendly fare

Head over to 252 W. 26th St. (near S. Princeton Avenue) to check it out for yourself. On the menu you'll also find the Vesuvio Italian Classic sandwich with breaded chicken breast, barbecue wings and Chicago-style hot dogs.

This article has 5 other Chicago locations (Show)

Topping the list is The Art of Pizza at 3033 N. Ashland Ave. (at West Nelson Street) in Lakeview. With another location in the Loop, it's the most popular budget-friendly Italian restaurant in Chicago, boasting four stars out of 1,068 reviews on Yelp.

Next up is Wrigleyville's Dimo's Pizza, situated at 3463 N. Clark St. (near N. Sheffield Avenue). With four stars out of 840 reviews on Yelp, the casual Italian spot has proven to be a local favorite for those looking for an affordable option.

Sitting in a historical spot in Little Italy, at 1438 W. Taylor St. (between Laflin and Bishop streets), Conte Di Savoia is another top choice, with Yelpers giving the affordable Italian deli and grocery store 4.5 stars out of 203 reviews.

Over in Edison Park, check out Tony's Italian Deli & Subs, which has earned 4.5 stars out of 191 reviews on Yelp. Dig in at the deli and Italian spot, which offers sandwiches and more, by heading over to 6708 N. Northwest Highway (between Oshkosh and Oliphant avenues).

...Deli & Pizzeria, a River North favorite with four stars out of 483 reviews. Stop by 405 N. Wabash Ave. (between Kinzie and Hubbard streets) to hit up the family-run deli and Italian spot...

  • If you call 911 they will send a patrol car to check it out.

  • As others have said, call 911 in mass (and get others to do the same) always giving details of the people involved, as well as getting the name of whomever you are speaking with on the call. All that said, the sad reality is that it's a slow, painful process....

As others have said, call 911 in mass (and get others to do the same) always giving details of the people involved, as well as getting the name of whomever you are speaking with on the call. All that said, the sad reality is that it's a slow, painful process. There are a few trouble areas in my neighborhood and neighbors consistently call 911 and complain to the alderman with little avail. Things have definitely gotten better, but not at the pace you would think/hope. There's sometimes little accountability and a general sense of apathy towards loiterers who can have a major effect on an area.

Record Row ... NOT Motor Row

As more and more development and investment continues to flood the South Loop area, I can't help but wonder if anyone will discuss Record Row -- the TRUE identity of what everyone seems to want to brand "Motor Row."

"Record Row" is the more relevant history for this area of Chicago. If the powers that be were smart, the strip along Michigan near McCormick's new 'Entertainment District' should really become a cultural corridor for Chicago, celebrating the historical Jazz and Blues contributions that line that entire strip. Nashville has Broadway Street ... New Orleans has Bourbon Street .... why on earth doesn't Chicago have something similar????

There's a great documentary on this strip if anyone is interested.

    Record Row
Record Row - Was produced by WTTW in Chicago (PBS) and aired in February 1997. I happened to tape it. Lost my tape a few months ago and then discoved that Record Row had disappeared from the earth more or less. Found one copy in a small college's library somewhere in the south but not available for loan.

I feel once we are past the negative perceptions of the area and truly embrace the great history of Bronzeville we will be rewarded in ways that are innumerable, if and when the resources are put in the promotion of what happened here. As a people we have never excluded even as we were not included. What concerns me is that this should be on the front of the consideration of the tourism bureau's investment portfolio, lets consider this area as an asset and as something to present to the World for celebration. If you can have art festivals, rib festivals and so on in the North side neighborhoods, why not have these festivals in the Southside venues.

  • The History and the greatness of Bronzeville is what we have to preserve, if we let this area become anything other than an Historical area then we have lost a great treasure.

Car Crashes Into Multiple Parked cars on S Indiana

A car crashed into multiple parked cars around 1 am last night on S Indiana, between 44th & 45th. I heard the sound of the crash but it took a few minutes to realize what had happened. 2 occupants of the car were arguing loudly. Police were called and showed up in 5 minutes. If you live on this block, you might want to check your car!

"The images I saw did not represent the schoo...

"The images I saw did not represent the school that I know; the negative picture saddened me because I know that there is more to Drake, 2710 S. Dearborn," Christopher Harris Sr. senior pastor of Bright Star Church of God writes.

Wait, before you take Drake Elementary to task, pastor says
Recently on the front page of the Sun-Times, I saw a picture of a school that is near and dear to me. I immediately read the story because Drake Elementary School was being depicted as a school that is filthy.

Free Trees!

Hi Neighbors,

In case you weren't aware, you can get FREE trees for your street from the city or working with a non-profit called Openlands. If it’s just one or a few trees then make a request through 311. If your street has open spots for 10+ trees then apply for a grant from Openlands. More details below.

For one or just a few trees, go through the city’s 311 online system (search tree planting) or call 311:

Hi Neighbors,

In case you weren't aware, you can get FREE trees for your street from the city or working with a non-profit called Openlands. If it’s just one or a few trees then make a request through 311. If your street has open spots for 10+ trees then apply for a grant from Openlands. More details below.

For one or just a few trees, go through the city’s 311 online system (search tree planting) or call 311:

https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/311.html

It takes time for requests to get fulfilled. My request took a couple of years before I got a call and something happened.

When I talked to one of the guys who runs tree planting for the city he said they plant trees based on demand. If no requests are made, no trees get planted. Be specific with your requests. For example, one tree at the curb outside XXXX S Calumet. The number of trees the city plants depends on the budget for the year. If the budget doesn’t cover the full list for the city (typical), then the list rolls over to the next year.

If you have space for 10+ trees then apply for a grant from Openlands:

https://openlands.org/trees/treeplanters-grants/

They will plant on city public land. Public land is considered to be the parkways between the curb and the sidewalk in front of residential houses, CPS school property, and some vacant lots. You need to organize a group of volunteers to help with planting. For example, neighbors, school group, church group, block club, etc.

Last Fall our group of neighbors planted 40 trees on two blocks in the neighborhood. It was a nice neighborhood event and a great way to fill in empty spots along the street that were missing trees.

Make the South Side even more beautiful!

I am once again protesting Everyblock's increasing censorship of perfectly legal, positive posts. I posted a link to the tragic shooting of an unarmed Black AA man in Sacramento CA and noted that it looked like the police acted improperly. I linked to a very positive informational video from FlexYourRights.org providing very practical advice how to avoid and survive hostile police encounters. I also linked to the City Hall protest where the deceased brothers and others through temper tantrums and behaved in inappropriate ways that discredited their legitimate grievances. Why was this censored? This censorship seems to me the same as when Everyblock censored my comments noting that some Simeon High School students ransacked the local Wall Mart in the national walk out protests over gun violence. What happened to our 1st Amendment rights to just suggest that our young people should not riot, loot stores and should try to avoid hostile police encounters by acting in a calm and reasonable way? Do we want our young people to riot - engage in behavior that will lead to very dangerous encounters with police or armed citizens? What's going on?

Women who voted for a man that loathes and uses women, loves crotch grabbing, is on his 3rd wife, who has physically abused his first wife, are blind to reality. There is a long list of negatives about this simple-minded man. They voted for him anyhow. I can see men voting for him, because they have the same views as he does. They are scared of equality. Republican women don't want equality. They are followers, and/or afraid to speak up. Again, I have a list of over 200 anti-female quotes spit out by misogynist Republican males. I'm not going to waste my time posting the rest of them. The few I posted gave you enough info. I will respect Republican women when they begin to respect themselves. I'm closing the book on this conversation.
