Chicago is having a Construction boom.

But there are few, if any Black African American construction workers on local (Hyde Park) construction projects.

The workers seem to be a 50-50% split between White - mostly older union workers and young Hispanics. Why is this so?

Chicago Black AA public schools no longer feature "trade school" education. The handy man type of training work is now all done by "undocumented" Hispanics and when the undocumented become citizens they have ethnic connections in trade unions and it's a natural transition.

Many occupations that were once dominated by English speaking, native born and raised Black A. A. are now overwhelmingly Hispanic - jobs like cooks, bus boys, landscapers and especially nannies. Open borders advocates (the entire Illinois Congressional Delegation led by Sen. Dick Durban) always argue that the "undocumented"/Illegal aliens only do the jobs legal Americans don't want. But, if these jobs paid a higher, living wage - then native born Americans would take them.

The entire Black Congressional Caucus gets F immigration grades from NumbersUSA and go with the idea that mass immigration from Mexico and Central America is a good thing because these people will all vote Lib Democrat.

Since I lived in Southern California I noted that Hispanics have pushed out Black AA from historic places like Watts and Compton CA - and also taken over these service jobs once done by Black Americans. So far the Chicago Democrat machine has gerrymandered Aldermanic and Congressional districts to keep Black seats, but since Chicago the city has lost ~ 50% of it's Black AA population since 2000 - it's inevitable that many/most Black aldermanic and Congressional seats will turn to Hispanic.

I also go with the idea that Chicago should not be a city in anarchy where laws against illegal immigration, hard drug trafficking and human trafficking (slavery) are not enforced as are our laws against shootings and murder.

  • Juan from South Loop 16 year South Loop resident

I wouldn't say that entire Chicago Democratic machine is on board with the current immigration process. Several AA alderman have taken a slightly different approach(passive aggressive). AA alderman had to donate a ward during the last redistricting. They gave up the historical black 2nd ward that was held by a white alderman at the time. Not sure it becomes that easy during the next redistricting. It matters when your job is on the line.

The congressional districts are probably safe for the next cycle.

The congressional districts are probably safe for the next cycle."

    I respond:

Maybe safe for the next cycle - but after that... I see Rep. .Danny Davis losing his district, no amount of gerrymandering is going to keep the Black West side Congressional seat safe as young hipsters continue to flood in and the Hispanic population continues to rapidly decrease while Chicago's Black AA population continues to dramatically decline.

FOUND @ 41st & Drexel

"We found a very sweet dog today in our neighborhood (found at 41st and Drexel). She was found in between two houses, barking out in the cold all day. She has no identification. We brought her to MedVet (24 hour vet) and found out that she has no microchip, and recently had puppies. We think she may have been abandoned, but we are hoping to see if we can spread the message far and wide in the case that someone is looking for her. Please share - especially South Side folks!" ~ Neil Maude 12/29/17

Our Chicago can be a very rough, mean and cruel city. It's not just the appalling numbers of shootings and murders - other basic city services are falling down and now we have a brutal, arctic cold wave and homeless people are in distress.

I note that the 51st street (by the Dan Ryan) Police station is being used as a homeless shelter. As is the downtown Harold Washington library during the day - the urine stench in the newspaper room is very strong.

We need to pressure our representatives to restore our police stations for the service of policing and move the homeless to shelters or shame obscenely endowed none profit organizations (University of Chicago, Northwestern, Loyola, Depault) to build some new homeless shelters. Depaul University just got the City to build them a very expensive basketball stadium in prime real-estate in the South Loop. The Depaul basketball team hasn't been any good since the late 1970s. The Catholic Church has been really falling down in doing basic charities and now prefers to embrace PC Lib Leftist causes like making Chicago a sanctuary city where the laws against illegal immigration (drug trafficking, people trafficking, sexual slave trafficking) aren't enforced.

But, the key issue here is that we need our 51st street police station back as an effective police station and not a (diseased) homeless shelter.

Feeding the homeless at Club 51: 'They are my friends, I break bread with them'
Aleta Clark says she was 18 months old when her mom dropped her off at a South Side police station and walked off. Nearly 30 years later, Clark walked into another station on the South Side in February to see a relative and noticed a lobby filled with people seeking shelter from the cold night.

  • What a bunch of soulless scrooges. What would Jesus do?

  • west bridgeporter just trying to be a good neighbor

I'm not soulless. I believe in helping the homeless but letting them reside in a police station doesn't provide the services they need.

Chicago is beautiful any time of year, and the Christmas season is no exception. Falling leaves give way to thousands of sparkling lights, and we all do our best to ignore the falling temperatures and enjoy the beautiful decorations of Millennium Park, State Street, and the Magnificent Mile.

Indoor places for family pictures

I'm a stickler for taking family pictures every year, but this year I procrastinated and missed the fall season. Now it's way too cold to take outdoor pictures so I'm thinking this might give us an opportunity to take pictures at a cool location we wouldn't ordinarily use. Any suggestions?

  • Hi. How about Garfield Park Conservatory?

  • Carlos D Butler Husband and Father of 2

We had a great photo session a few years ago inside the Blackstone Hotel. Lots of interesting spaces.

Santa arrives early with wonder dog SYD

Santa dropped by the house early today to check out the chimney - to make sure he'd fit - and also to drop by and see his favorite canine - SYD - they obviously have a great rapport.

  • (Bow)Wow SYD, you must have been nice and not naughty to score a personal visit from Santa! Peace, love and joy to both of you.

Prepay your Property Taxes for 2017 Tax Deduction

You may want to pay the 1st installment of your property tax bill before the end of this year for a deduction on your 2017 federal taxes. You may not be able to utilize the deduction in 2018.

Prepay your Property Taxes for 2017 Tax Deduction
With the likely passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, it is estimated that the majority of taxpayers who currently itemize their deductions will take the standard deduction for the tax year 2018. The reason for this change will be capping of State and Local Tax and Property tax deductions at $10,000.

Thinking about Moving to 60616

Hi friends...we are thinking about moving from over the river to south of the river....seems like a great - upcoming area. A new Marriott Marquis just went up, a Hilton is in process - and I hope that a grocery, walgreens, etc. are on their way.

Any hints or pointers those of you who live in the area can offer. We don't have a car....so, public transit, walking are our primary modes of getting around....

  • Judy Happy Chicago Resident!

Hi New Neighbors...thank you for all of your feedback over this last month - we are moving to 60616 - renting at Cermak and Michigan. It is still a developing area - so, shopping and services won't be out my back door as they are in Streeterville. Without a car, I just have to plan better.

New Question....what ward are we in? I have seen reference to Ward 3and Ward 4 And are there community/civic activities that I can get involved in?
