Latinos Progresando is Awarded $250,000 from Neighborhood Opportunity Fund On March 6th, a total of 25 winners were selected from a pool of more than 800 applicants for their potential to create catalytic change along neighborhood commercial corridors. For years Alderman Cardenas urged the Department of Planning and Development to invest in neighborhood commercial corridors, like Cermak Road and 26th Street in Little Village. When a new initiative was announced that generates funds from downtown development projects to support commercial corridor growth in Chicago neighborhoods, he urged the business community in the 12th Ward to take advantage of the opportunity. Through persistence of their own, and help from Alderman Cardenas, Latinos Progresando received a $250,000 grant to restore the boarded-up former library building at 2724 W. Cermak to its original purpose of serving the community. Future use for the former library building will include high-quality, low-cost immigration legal services, cultural, educational and wellness services, mental health services and a space for community meetings and events.
