Why Mr. Rogers Got It and Fox News Never Will!
By now I'm sure you're aware that 2018 is the 50th anniversary of "Mister Rogers Neighborhood," broadcast nationally by PBS. The milestone has received a great deal of media coverage, a documentary on PBS - hosted by Michael Keaton, who actually worked on the show, a theatrical documentary that came out in June and Tom...

Merging Bridgeport Churches and Schools

Anyone have any update abouts what's going on with Bridgeport Churches and Schools merging?

  • emj1900 bp

Catholic school system has nobody else to blame but themselves for their dwindling church and school attendance. PERIOD! They are going merge whether you agree or disagree. And it's sad that the merging schools had to suck up their money in the red... The almighty Vatican needs to suck it up.... Maybe they can open that vast vault they have their and sell off a few gold chalices... of which they have plenty...

  • Lifetime, I agree private education are expensive and many people can't afford it. But there is also a dilema where without more revenues, the schools cannot be properly funded. I know the Archdiocese expect each parish to be self sustaining but its time they make an investment and open up...

Lifetime, I agree private education are expensive and many people can't afford it. But there is also a dilema where without more revenues, the schools cannot be properly funded. I know the Archdiocese expect each parish to be self sustaining but its time they make an investment and open up their pocketbooks.
In addition, St. Therese was able to increase their school enrollment with a long waiting list due to the high educational standards set. Many other Catholic schools are within a 1 or 2 mile radius from St, Therese. These other schools need to do more to reach out to the community and raise their educational standards. Their are people in the neighborhood willing to pay for a better education for their kids.

Back up, city's main sewer need to be clean up

There is backing up in my place for 4 weeks already. I had two plumbers proved that there is no water flooding in the city's main sewer, which means it is clogged. I have called the city and they confirmed that the city needs to rod the main sewer. But 4 weeks passed already, they haven't done anything, just keep telling me to wait. The situation is getting worse. can you imagine how do we live in a building that has very strong smell from the backing up under such hot weather? Any good advices?

  • Wow! What a horrible situation. I am sorry that you are going through this. Have you contacted your alderman’s office? I would go in person to the office with the pictures because you’ll be less likely to get the run around. Check also with neighbors to see if anyone else has had the problem. There is strength in numbers.

    Good luck!

Cat Found

Hi. I live in the area of 29th and archer. There is a white and grey long haired cat that has been wandering the block the last month.

She now looks like a stray but answers and comes to my back porch everyday. Shes in need of some clean up and medical but it seems she belonged to someone once.

Anyone still missing a medium to long haired grey and white cat? She wanders around crying and its heartbreaking. Anyone know of a service that will pick her up?

  • Jambo neighbor

Dear Cat Helper, Theresa and Miss Priss, THANK YOU to these ladies for watching out for animals in need! You are LOVED for this!

  • MissPriss, thank you so much for helping this kitty. Having a tender heart for animals is a gift...and you are using your gift well. Many, many blessings to you!

I went to the first one in 1980, when I worked in the Loop--I don't recall how much it cost except it was much cheaper, you could try a bigger variety before you either filled up or ran out of tickets, and much of what was there was unique. Great lunchtime alternative to the ubiquitous Loop cookie-cutter Greek "coffee shop" luncheonettes. On the last day I remember I had a 25-cent ticket remaining, it was warm out, and one of the vendors didn't want to cart perishables back. So I got a flat of 12 containers of strawberry Yoplait (a brand and style new to Chicago, which had only Dannon at the time), put it in the office fridge, and drove it home after work. (But to this day I can't stand strawberry yogurt),

Nowadays, I go only when my knees can take standing around for hours and there's a musical act I want to go see. You have to jockey for a table to put your food & drink down while you stand, nearly half the items are fast-food from well-known restaurants available across the area year-round; and there are those stupid tickets! You can't buy only as many as you want, because the booklets contain odd quantities that are too few or too many. I end up either forgoing something I'd really wanted, compromising and eating something I wasn't really craving, or having leftover scrip to languish in a drawer (not knowing if they'd be usable next year) or to give to strangers. Last time we went (to see the Chieftains), so few items appealed to us that we actually ended up at a real restaurant in Millennium Park with normal portions, tables & chairs, metal utensils, glasses and servers. And we spent no more than had we eaten the same quantity of food standing up, spilling stuff on our clothes and sweltering,

WXRT - a bit of history you might never hear

SIDETRIP THEATRE (circa late 1972 (prep)/early 73-broadcast) - the very first rock program on WXRT - which was then a foreign language station the rest of the broadcast day. SIDETRIP was hosted by Don Bridges and ran from 12M to 3AM - I know - I was the board op. Others followed like John Platt, Mitch Michaels Salchow, Seth Mason etc....but somehow Don's contribution to change the WXRT landscape from foreign language to underground rock - always gets left untold. Arnie Granat and Jerry Michelson of JAM PRODUCTIONS were also instrumental because initially they were the very first sponsors.

  • I think I heard Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express on this show. Unfortunately the “Mavericks” of back then have morphed into only a couple of hours on Monday night worth of listening on Xrt.
    Thanks for the post.

The Chinese Exclusion Act

PBS/WTTW Channel 11 on May 29th is having a special presentation of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. It examines the history of how this Act kept the Chinese from coming to America and the Chinese who are already in America from becoming US citizens until the 1940's.

  • emj will love watching this. If she had her way, Bridgeport would have dozens of boarded up storefronts where Chinese businesses flourish today.

  • In 1944, a Chicagoan became the first Chinese-American to naturalize after repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act. He was in the US since 1892.

My favorite Bridgeport Pizza?

Does anyone know what happened with Lina's Pizza on Morgan Street?

  • Too many people are just brave when sitting behind a key board. I really wish he would take his comments and racial slurs to the streets of Bridgeport.

    R. Gar ... Tad is the classic definition of a troll. But you are correct in that I would love to see him take his comments and racial slurs to the streets - especially around Armour Square - there he would turn into a magician in that he would actually disappear.

p.s. bye Tad, you've been muted.

I already muted the troll as well .... He seems to really hate this area, why is he even here...? And you are right R. Gar.....Let him make those racist slur comments in let's say Rockys.......Now that would be funny.....

I was pleased to hear that my blog, "Go Do Good," has for the third time in the last 12 months been recognized as one of the top 20 (in a specific month) by the Chicago Tribune. Let me share you with you another blog (one of the 20 recognized also for outstanding composition) that might be of help to someone you know in PAIN seeking an alternative method other than using opioids like NARCO. The blog is by Chicagoan Judy Marcus. Having helped a senior relative secure a medical marijuana card, I'm familiar with the process but Judy's blog spells it all out plus provides an opportunity to learn more. Please share with those who might want to consider an alternate to opiod Rx. http://www.chicagonow.com/opinionated-woman/2018/04/everything-you-need-to-know-to-buy-medical-marijuana-legally-in-illinois/

Everything you need to know to buy medical marijuana legally in Illinois
I've experienced debilitating back pain off and on for over a decade. When the pain gets bad enough, I alternate between taking Aleve and Norco, an opioid which was prescribed for me by an orthopedic surgeon. Norco makes me feel like I'm floating on a lovely white cloud.
