Record Row ... NOT Motor Row

As more and more development and investment continues to flood the South Loop area, I can't help but wonder if anyone will discuss Record Row -- the TRUE identity of what everyone seems to want to brand "Motor Row."

"Record Row" is the more relevant history for this area of Chicago. If the powers that be were smart, the strip along Michigan near McCormick's new 'Entertainment District' should really become a cultural corridor for Chicago, celebrating the historical Jazz and Blues contributions that line that entire strip. Nashville has Broadway Street ... New Orleans has Bourbon Street .... why on earth doesn't Chicago have something similar????

There's a great documentary on this strip if anyone is interested.

    Record Row
Record Row - Was produced by WTTW in Chicago (PBS) and aired in February 1997. I happened to tape it. Lost my tape a few months ago and then discoved that Record Row had disappeared from the earth more or less. Found one copy in a small college's library somewhere in the south but not available for loan.

I feel once we are past the negative perceptions of the area and truly embrace the great history of Bronzeville we will be rewarded in ways that are innumerable, if and when the resources are put in the promotion of what happened here. As a people we have never excluded even as we were not included. What concerns me is that this should be on the front of the consideration of the tourism bureau's investment portfolio, lets consider this area as an asset and as something to present to the World for celebration. If you can have art festivals, rib festivals and so on in the North side neighborhoods, why not have these festivals in the Southside venues.

  • The History and the greatness of Bronzeville is what we have to preserve, if we let this area become anything other than an Historical area then we have lost a great treasure.

The property at 2065 S Indiana Avenue says it's in Douglas, but that area is more Prairie District / South Loop I believe? The unit at 606 E Woodland Park Avenue doesn't look like you get a whole lot (and I'm not familiar with the quality of that building) but that's a nice area. That unit puts you minutes from the 31st Beach and pier and you're steps from the brand new pedestrian bridge they built on 35th (taking you directly to the Lake). I'd say there's still a moderate amount of crime in the area (you sometimes hear of things happening in and around Lake Meadows), but all-in-all, that's relatively quiet area.

History on the wing: how evolution in birds is a window into the past

Take a look, if you will, at the birds pictured here. With their yellow throats and yellow breasts, their mottled feathers and the black streaks lining their wings like racing stripes - tiny cotton balls where their eyes once sat - they look like birds of a feather.

Why 'Divergent' author Veronica Roth carries a spark of rebellion and channels her younger self through writing

2301 S. King Drive 312-791-7000

Why 'Divergent' author Veronica Roth carries a spark of rebellion and channels her younger self through writing
When "Divergent" hit bookstands in 2011, it transported readers to another frightening dystopian world, much like "The Hunger Games" did a few years earlier. Author Veronica Roth, the woman behind the New York Times bestselling series, grew up in Barrington, graduated from Northwestern and now lives in Chicago.

Name calling: "Snowflake" Misquoting: I did not say "It's fine to think, it but not say it" I said "It's fine to think it, but to post it reduces her to a sex object." You can say it all you want, to your buddies, but posting it shows your shallowness. Exaggerating: North Korea? Really?? You've got your boxing gloves on. Women are tired of being reduced to their looks. Being male, you don't realize what females go through day after day, after day, after day.

  • I never called you a snowflake.

I said: I don't have time for snowflakes who spend "THEIR" entire lives only looking for ways to get offended.

I didn't say: I don't have time for "YOU" snowflakes who spend "YOUR" entire life only looking for ways to get offended. Get it?...

I didn't say: I don't have time for "YOU" snowflakes who spend "YOUR" entire life only looking for ways to get offended. Get it? You referred to what's currently going on in the culture, and I refuted that movement because I think it's oversensitive nonsense. I never called <you> anything.

And how is what you said not telling me it's okay to think it, but not say(POST) it? Come on now, you gotta be honest here.

As far as everything else, I stand by my post. Using your logic, if I said something like: "Veronica is wicked smart!" You could then just as easily come on here and be like: "What, how dare you reduce her worth to just her brain power! She's a beautiful young woman, too!" See how foolish that sounds? As if one is mutually exclusive to the other?

Again, I didn't "reduce" her to anything, you did. I think she's beautiful, and I'm not going to apologize for giving a woman a complement.
