Lights Out

Most of the street lights on Paulina St. between 18th St. and Cermak Rd. are out. Anyone know why?
The area around Cooper School is especially dark. I've seen groups of young girls and elderly women walking cautiously in the area, while groups of young men linger about.
There is some construction going on with the roads (sewers) but it can't be impossible to have some temporary lights for safety.

If anything breaks in the City, a 3-1-1 request will be routed directly to the City agency responsible for fixing the problem. You can even request text messages for updates. Just about every agency is responsive. (... except for Streets & Sanitation - good luck with them, if you ever need them...) Fortunately, there is a separate agency for street lighting.

This is the direct link to the form for Street Lights out: https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/cdot/provdrs/traffic_signals_andstreetlights/svcs/street_light_1_out.html

Pilsen dog park needed

New gal here and decided to post regarding a need for a dog park in Pilsen. There are doggies everywhere!

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

There are quite a few puparents who frequent Jackson Bark. All routes to and from are less congested than going to the dog parks around the loop or northside, plus free parking is available. Click the map icon at the bottom of the page for directions www.jacksonbark.com

  • Agree with melirodgriguez! The small triangle next to the pool at Dvorak Park would be an ideal place for a dog park where many dogs are there most days anyway. I have taken my dog there many times and met other dog owners in the neighborhood who would love to...

Agree with melirodgriguez! The small triangle next to the pool at Dvorak Park would be an ideal place for a dog park where many dogs are there most days anyway. I have taken my dog there many times and met other dog owners in the neighborhood who would love to have a dog park, new and old residents. For now, I do visit the dog park on Wabash in-between 16th and 18th which is a great park but a bit of a walking distance from Pilsen. There are really no dog parks for owners to use in the nearby area and it would be nice to have a designated space so dogs can run freely and safely.

Pilsen Open Studios XV

http://www.chicagotribune.com/hoy/ct-pilsen-artists-open-up-their-studios-on-their-quinceanera-20171020-story.html

"Although most artists are Latino, not everyone uses the same aesthetic and not everyone makes folk art. The Latin American community is just as complex in styles and philosophies as what you are going to find in the Art Institute of Chicago."

Pilsen artists open up their studios on their 'quinceañera'
15 years ago, Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events designated October as Chicago Artists' Month. They sent a letter to the muralist Héctor Duarte to propose the idea that he open up his workshop to the public, located across the street from the National Museum of Mexican Art, and offer him some publicity in their brochure.
    http://www.chicagotribune.com
  • In the 15 years of the Open Studios, many of us that live our life in Pilsen/ Heart of Chicago area. we are not allowed to visit the art studios. People with mobility disabilities are excluded due to no access to the studios locations. Maybe that should be included in such articles. Many of the businesses on 18th Street exclude those with disabilities on a daily basis,

Diez y Ocho restaurant 'priced out', re-opens Friday for the last time
'Diez y Ocho' is the name by which Michael Hernandez calls the neighborhood where he grew up, and it's what he decided to name his burger joint located on 18th St. and Damen Ave., a promising, but short-lived venture that could not survive the increasing cost of commercial space in Pilsen, he said.

What Is The Future Of Pilsen? New Plan To Be Unveiled This Weekend

After surveying more than 1,000 neighbors and community members, the Pilsen Planning Committee will reveal its findings at a 9 a.m. meeting Saturday at Benito Juarez Community Academy, 1450 W. Cermak Road.

What Is The Future Of Pilsen? New Plan To Be Unveiled This Weekend
PILSEN - It was 12 years ago when community leaders in Pilsen developed a plan for their beloved neighborhood. But a lot has changed in the dozen years that followed, so organizers went back to the drawing board to update their vision and pave the way for the next generation of residents.

Car Windshields on 16th St

Does anyone have any issues with parking their cars on 16th and getting tiny nicks in their windshields? My bf has complained about this happening to him twice. He thinks someone's doing it; I think it might be from pebbles falling from the train tracks. Other cars parked nearby display the same type of scratches, too.

  • My first thought when I read the title of the post was 'trains' . I don't think anyone would be throwing rocks at your windshield, unless you've done something to anger someone haha. My guess is the same as yours - gravel/pebbles from the metra line either falling from the...

My first thought when I read the title of the post was 'trains' . I don't think anyone would be throwing rocks at your windshield, unless you've done something to anger someone haha. My guess is the same as yours - gravel/pebbles from the metra line either falling from the rumble of the trains or actively getting shot into the air as the train rolls by. If you don't want to move your car to another street, you could try getting one of those windshield covers that loops over the side mirrors. I hear they are useful in the winter for getting snow & ice off your car fast, but I've never used them myself

  • Yes. This happens. The trains do launch gravel into the air at speed. We had a stone break a double pane window on our house and the alignment of the holes was such that only a train in the middle of the overpass could have done it.

BNSF has a community relations and claims department to address any large amount of damage, but I suspect small nicks and gouges in a windshield would be tougher to cover. (Most auto insurance policies fix windshield nicks for free since they can grow into cracks.) Parking on the North side of 16th St. vs. the South side, should keep one out of the path of anything thrown from the tracks.
