How Restaurants Feed the Gentrification Debate in Pilsen and Logan Square

“If you’re going to [bank] on people coming in from outside the neighborhood, you’re starting off on the wrong foot,” said Gutierrez, who opened a new Mexican restaurant with his family called Canton Regio, 1510 W. 18th Street, after a fire shut down Nuevo Leon.

This article has 1 other Chicago location (Show)

When the ramen joint took over 30-year-old Mexican restaurant El Charro, 2410 N. Milwaukee Avenue, it was a sharp example of a trendy eatery replacing a Mexican-owned establishment, and many neighbors weren’t pleased.

How Restaurants Feed the Gentrification Debate in Pilsen and Logan Square
Last summer, Christian Diaz was walking with his aunt past all of the new restaurants and bars along Logan Square's Milwaukee Avenue when she made a striking remark. A Mexican immigrant who has lived in the area for decades, Diaz's aunt said "some of the restaurants made her feel like a cockroach," said Diaz, an organizer with the community group Logan Square Neighborhood Association.

  • “I resent how unfriendly those businesses are to families,” said Diaz with Logan Square Neighborhood Association said of Furious Spoon and the string of new bars along the Milwaukee Avenue corridor, many of them offering cocktails for more than $10......

Comments like this make it difficult to have a logical discussion.

  • If business has been great for the existing establishment I doubt they would have sold. Unfortunately existing businesses need existing residents to have a little spending money. Failing that, another concept must come in or you have a boarded up building for years or decades.

Support the local businesses you like or shut up when they shutter.

There haven't been as many job opportunities in these gentrifying areas for decades as there are now. Too bad wielding a can of spray paint doesn't look so good on a job application.

  • People want to dictate what businesses open and what customers they should serve. Sorry, but that kind of thinking can be turned right back around on you when somebody says they don't want businesses serving your kind in their neighborhood.

Everybody gets to vote with their wallet. If nobody went to Furious Spoon, it would close.

Piano teacher?

Hi, I'm looking for a piano teacher for my five year old. Any recommendations? We have a piano, so we're able to have someone come to us, if needed. Thanks!

  • These are great ideas, thank you! I also found a site, takelessons.com, where you can look within an area code and see reviews for a teacher, too. I'm going to check out the places you recommended, as well. Thank you!

  • Follow-up, I tried the takelessons.com and had a miserable experience. Wouldn't stop harassing me after I created a profile, and when I did try to enlist a teacher, the teacher backed out within 30 minutes. Was told I would have someone try and help find a replacement, but no one ever contacted me and I called to get a refund. So, just FYI! Now looking at other options.

Looking for a good honest plumber for Pilsen

Some friends of mine on 21st street are having a clogged toilet problem. Three-story house, it's a problem with the toilet on the second floor, only. Seems isolated to that stack. They need a good plumber, but obv. like everyone else, they're budget-minded folks.
