Thinking about Moving to 60616

Hi friends...we are thinking about moving from over the river to south of the river....seems like a great - upcoming area. A new Marriott Marquis just went up, a Hilton is in process - and I hope that a grocery, walgreens, etc. are on their way.

Any hints or pointers those of you who live in the area can offer. We don't have a car....so, public transit, walking are our primary modes of getting around....

  • Judy Happy Chicago Resident!

Thank you all for your thoughtful responses....60616 here we come!

What I like about JAHS is that the teachers create a great support system. If anyone I know ever needs another chance at school, I will tell them to give JAHS a chance.

The way I ve become successful at JAHS is by changing my whole perspective of what I need to do. I make sure I do all my work, try not get into much trouble, and turn in my work on time. What I ve learned at JAHS is respect, safety, and engagement. I ve also learned how to get things done without any distractions and I m working on not letting people provoke me so easily. If my grades start to slip and I start to fall behind in my classes, they are on me. JAHS is just a small, quiet school with great teachers, staff members, and students.

A rare shoot in a neighborhood is one thing. Having a particular part of the neighborhood that is a popular industrial movie set is another. The people who live there get absolutely steamrolled...

For example, the intersection of Blue Island and 18th is one of those places. There have been multiple shows (too many to count) and over 5 movie shoots there this past year. Each time this happens, the production companies take over entire blocks in the neighborhoods (off set) for their personal parking, trailer parking, and truck parking. Then, adding insult to injury (after kicking all the residents out) they don't even use all of the space.

This would be a lot better if the Chicago Film Office actually did a service for the people of our City! They are only chartered to roll the red carpet out for outsiders and only have staff to rubber stamp applications given to them by Hollywood. (I confirmed this in multiple calls.) They do not limit shoots at particular locations, make sure the closed space is actually being used, or move the ancillary parking around from shoot-to-shoot. (So the same blocks keep getting hit for parking and catering.) When it rains and shoots are canceled, the "No Parking" zones stay up (even when the streets are empty) and the residents still get ticketed.

Pilsen is NOT a Movie Set

Is anyone else ticked off by the constant shooting of TV shows in our area? Is anyone else ticked off by the constant shooting of TV shows in our area? Those involved with the productions (The Chi, Empire, Chicago PDFireMedJustice, ad infinitum) show little respect for the folks whose lives they constantly interrupt. In Pilsen, seldomly does a week go by when The Chi isn't hogging blocks upon blocks of commercial parking space. Do they feed the most expensive meters in America? All one has to do is to try walking past their cables, equipment, and indifferent personnel to feel their disdain for residents.
We don't want you here.
I don't want you in Pilsen.
Cinespace is but a mile away. Go there.

To digress a bit, what's with the resurgence of gangs and their ilk in Pilsen? Every other wall, building, sidewalk, or trash can is tagged with their graffiti. Where is asswipeman Danny Solis? There must be a lull in counting ill gotten gains to see to some of these neighborhood concerns, no?
When is election day? I've got to wake up my dead relatives and drag them to the polls.

And Can the Soda Tax!

That is all for now. Thanks.

As I walked in the building and met the staff- I felt a different approach. I felt comfortable. I believe what has allowed me to become successful is the confidence and the discipline that Jane Addams has given me. The teachers have shown me how to be more optimistic and turn negatives into positives. Being a student of Jane Addams has allowed to me to learn how to be self-sufficient. I have learned not to rely on anyone. Using critical thinking skills that I have developed, I have managed to keep my grades up which I am very proud of. Jane Addams has taught me to take responsibility for my own actions. I have developed a wiser type of character because of this. I speak up for myself and when something I do causes a bad outcome, I take full responsibility for it. Jane Addams has been an amazing journey so far. At Jane Addams, I see patience and tolerance in every way. This is what I have liked the most at this school. Jane Addams has been everything that I needed to go on to the next chapter of my life. Jane Addams has prepared me to be mentally and emotionally ready for the rocky roads on my way to success.

  • Jane Addams High School reviewed by a student

Thanks to the administrators at Jane Addams, they have helped me get an Internship at a retail store to gain experience on a job since I have never worked part of a team management before. I like the honesty from Jane Addams staff that will alarm you to real life obstacles and will help you prepare for them on how to overcome whatever s getting in your way. Before Jane Addams, I rarely went to school, missed countless of unexcused days, skipped lunch and hanged out at the library. I ve always had in mind of what a huge failure I considered myself to be, and at some point, like many times; I thought that it would be my destiny. Thanks to the Jane Addams staff that showed me the positive side of the options I had which I didn t know existed, I now want to accomplish a whole lot more.

Loud Motorbike Racing Over East Pilsen

Motorcycles, some easily reaching speeds over 100mph, race on Dan Ryan Expy with impunity. Nightly, between midnight and 4am, motorcycles speed South of Roosevelt to God-knows-where. I never hear a siren give chase. What gives? Where's the State Police? You could easily make a few thousand in fines for empty state coffers.
Loudest is Ryan over Canalport @2am. Your help will be appreciated.

  • Jane Addams High School reviewed by a parent

This is a REAL school. Having 3 of my 5 children go to many schools in Chicago, Jane Addams was the last and best school out of them all. They are just normal like school is supposed to be. They don't do a lot of nonsense like all the schools are doing now. They really teach and that is why I send my kids to school... to be taught. Jane Addams gets a A+

Racial Wafts

There are no less than 8 mentions of an attack by 4 black youth on 1 white man on south Michigan Monday night.
Yes, a problem exists. Always has.
But I don't recall Lequan McDonald getting this much press when he was murdered (prior to video release).
Every single news outlet posted their take, and the underlying theme in most is "Oh, no. Not in my playground. Call the National Guard." Please.

Happy Thanksgiving.
