Looking for a good honest plumber for Pilsen

Some friends of mine on 21st street are having a clogged toilet problem. Three-story house, it's a problem with the toilet on the second floor, only. Seems isolated to that stack. They need a good plumber, but obv. like everyone else, they're budget-minded folks.

Piano teacher?

Hi, I'm looking for a piano teacher for my five year old. Any recommendations? We have a piano, so we're able to have someone come to us, if needed. Thanks!

  • Merit School of Music is a good school. They may have or know of "at home" teachers. My goddaughter went there for 2 or 3 years. I haven't tried Chicago Academy Of Music on 17th, but they may have or know of resources. That's great that he's starting so young! Good luck. :)

  • Even though Old Town School of Folks Music is north, you could ask them if they have any teachers from or who travel to the Pilsen area.

  • These are great ideas, thank you! I also found a site, takelessons.com, where you can look within an area code and see reviews for a teacher, too. I'm going to check out the places you recommended, as well. Thank you!

Underground Pedway

How safe is the underground pedway near the museums? I know there's an entrance near 1100 S. Columbus Drive near the Aquarium. Input greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Morgan S. Live in Heart of Chicago / Pilsen neighborhood

a bomb, your description is on point. The Lake Shore Dr. underpass has always been a little risky, but OK to use if you are aware of the environment around you. The Pedway is a great system downtown, except for accessibility for those with mobility disabilities has not been great.

  • Sheila A. Donovan Have been an owner at the Stratford since 2001.

I've used the underpass to the museum campus countless times without a problem. In fact, I've never heard of anyone having a problem there, though like anywhere there might have been a few incidents. I consider it to be quite safe.

Obnoxious Loudness in Pilsen

How can people in certain parts of Pilsen tolerate Banda music and drunkeness in the middle of the night? How? The is a total lack of regard for people who have wake up early. Moreover, if you call the police, you become a target for their animosity. Does anyone know how to silence these folks without becoming a target?

I live in La Villita so it's the same if not more so. It comes with the territory for living around Mexican Immigrants. It's a different way of life you need to get used to if you want to live Amongst different cultures

  • I've been here 6 years..a transplanted South Chicagoan.. Its a shame gentrification has softened peoples ears.. There are bigger fish to fry..but keep complaining about Banda music.. The assault rifles down Cermak Road during school hours bring perspective..

Vandals damage Holy Family window; five other churches hit

Pels said the St. Procopius burglary was at 2 a.m. Dec. 4. At 9:30 a.m. the same day, a thief broke into St. Pius Parish, 1919 S. Ashland Ave. No one at St. Pius could be reached for comment.

Fr. Gabriel said he was told vandals also broke two windows at the former St. Adalbert Church, 1650 W. 17th St., which has been purchased by an arts group. Many windows in the church and its adjacent buildings were already boarded up.

“It reminds us to always be forgiving and understand people are coming from other places,” said Linda Lavery as she helped distribute food to the homeless at Holy Family Church, 1080 W. Roosevelt Rd. “At Christmas time, people do have a lot of emotional issues. We are called to be forgiving.”

At St. Procopius Church, 1641 S. Allport St., a thief broke through a glass panel in a side door to steal money from the candle box, Sylvia Pels, church operations director, said. “A surveillance camera photographed the thief, but could not capture his face.”

On Dec. 7, someone tried to break into St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 813 W. Roosevelt Rd., smashing a glass panel in a front door. “The alarm was on, so they left,” the pastor, Rev. Walter Mallo, said.

At Old St. Pat’s, 700 W. Adams St., sometime between 10 p.m. Dec. 20 and 10 a.m. the following morning, someone smashed a glass block window but did not enter the church, police said.

Pilsen Alliance not so innocent

The Pilsen Alliance isn't so innocent when it comes to race.

  • As a real estate professional ANYWHERE you can't "steer". Meaning you can't direct people to a neighborhood if the intention is good or bad.

The intention may be good but for a real estate agent, it's illegal even so.
I don't read any veiled meaning in these posts.
What the Pilsen Alliance is doing is directly "steering" and even worse.
They're singling out racial groups as enemies in their own neighborhood for the fact these people are not Mexican.
    Racism to a major degree.
They have not interest in harmony.
Their cause is self serving and delusional.

  • Ringo712 Block Captain

Looks to me there's alot of Indians and other Asian groups moving in as well. What they all have in common is green money. If you don't have money you can't choose were you live.
Pilsen Alliance are nothing but a bunch of jerks.

The story of the proposed Capitol Hill landmark that somebody actually wants to be landmark

Castanes believes protecting the house could be “a win-win situation” when people want density in this city — the house at 1632 15th Ave, Castanes says, has recently been home to five tenants living throughout the three-story, 3,600-square-foot structure.

The story of the proposed Capitol Hill landmark that somebody actually wants to be landmark
The 1898-built Queen Anne Victorian home of a Seattle businessman that has survived through the changes of Capitol Hill at 15th and E Olive St. is lined up for purchase by a townhome developer. In a city scrambling to create more affordable housing and with a nearly 120-year-old house that has definitely seen better days, the trade probably seems worth it.

Stop your whining.

I feel happy and proud when i see filming in the hood. It can be a slight temporary inconvenience. Shameless is a fabulous show that shines a light on a different way of life.

A few people that recently moved into area whine about many things that are not the real issues and concerns that actually effect our lives. A rare shoot in a neighborhood is one thing. Having a particular part of the neighborhood that is a popular industrial movie set is another. The people who live there get absolutely steamrolled...

For example, the intersection of Blue Island and 18th is one of those places. There have been multiple shows (too many to count) and over 5 movie shoots there this past year. Each time this happens, the production companies take over entire blocks in the neighborhoods (off set) for their personal parking, trailer parking, and truck parking. Then, adding insult to injury (after kicking all the residents out) they don't even use all of the space.

This would be a lot better if the Chicago Film Office actually did a service for the people of our City! They are only chartered to roll the red carpet out for outsiders and only have staff to rubber stamp applications given to them by Hollywood. (I confirmed this in multiple calls.) They do not limit shoots at particular locations, make sure the closed space is actually being used, or move the ancillary parking around from shoot-to-shoot. (So the same blocks keep getting hit for parking and catering.) When it rains and shoots are canceled, the "No Parking" zones stay up (even when the streets are empty) and the residents still get ticketed.

Pilsen is NOT a Movie Set

Is anyone else ticked off by the constant shooting of TV shows in our area? Those involved with the productions (The Chi, Empire, Chicago PDFireMedJustice, ad infinitum) show little respect for the folks whose lives they constantly interrupt. We don't want you here.
I don't want you in Pilsen.
Cinespace is but a mile away. Go there.

To digress a bit, what's with the resurgence of gangs and their ilk in Pilsen? Every other wall, building, sidewalk, or trash can is tagged with their graffiti. Where is asswipeman Danny Solis? There must be a lull in counting ill gotten gains to see to some of these neighborhood concerns, no?
When is election day? I've got to wake up my dead relatives and drag them to the polls.

And Can the Soda Tax!

That is all for now. Thanks.

Where to sell used goods locally?

I would like to get rid of some decent electronics that are used but probably still have some value. (55" TV, laptops, etc).

Anyone know of a good place around Pilsen / Bridgeport that buys and resales used goods? (aside from Craigslist, etc)
