Dog waste

Even with gentrification, many people leave their neatly bagged dog waste on the parkway. Why because there aren't garbage cans close to the open areas where many people walk their dogs.
Recently, we were around Chicago & Ogden admiring the architecture of a beautiful old Catholic church. The dogs were in the car. We drove around the corner and let them out for a breather when I had to go back to the car to get a bag to pick up our surprise. Then came the fun part, looking for a garbage can. Drove one stinky block to dispose. Yuk! Many people just go back to their condo, they're not carrying a bag of sh** back home

Dog Waste

How can we as a community work on reducing the amount of pet waste in Pilsen? Every block has at least 2 piles of pet waste around my area, 16th to 18th between Halsted and Racine. How can we as a community work on reducing the amount of pet waste in Pilsen? Every block has at least 2 piles of pet waste around my area, 16th to 18th between Halsted and Racine. The alderman signs are not working. At this point, its about getting together as a community because it has gone too far. Not only that, my dog tends to eat the waste. So let's save our community and my dogs breath. Should we encourage businesses and home owners in the area to provide waste bags? I know that it's not their problem, but if we care about our neighborhood, our health, the expense could be ever changing. Beer and alcohol bottles are next. I love the culture, small businesses, and the food carts in the morning. It's a really special place to live. Please. Ideas are welcome!

Becca, unfortunately it is very difficult to educate people of low social responsibility. My neighborhood has seen a large uptick in pet waste clean-up responsibility during the past 5-6 years not due to any other reason than gentrification, unfortunately. As a Latina I had wished differently for years but it is hard to teach an old dog owner new tricks. Many of the people who let their pet waste lay where it was excreted are the very same people who have left the neighborhood. I think there is a soon-to-be-discovered link between intelligence, dog poop clean-up, and the ability to afford one's residence.

  • They should create a dog park so people know where to take their dogs. I know many people like to use the trees planted on the sidewalk, but as you pointed out, don't pick up after themselves.

Francisco Lassio is our office Director of City Services, life-long Pilsen resident, (and gym shoe collector, extraordinaire). I’m proud to say he’s been a reliable, bilingual and necessary part of our team for over ten years. These days you can catch this proud papa of two, happier than a kid in a candy store because his alma mater, Loyola Ramblers, advanced to March Madness’ Elite Eight. Thanks for sharing your Jesuit values with our office and community, Francisco! #25thWardChicago #MostDiverseWard #BestStaff #Pilsen #GoRamblers

We couldn’t get Jackson Chiu to smile for this photo because he is not one for public recognition. Nevertheless, Jackson is a big part of my staff, serving as our office liaison with Chinatown. Some of us call him “Mr. Service Requests”, because he diligently tackles an insane amount of these for the residents of our ward. When he isn’t working in the office, Jackson is doing one of two things: Spending time with his wife and 1 year-old son, (with another baby on the way,); or two, he's eating. The man loves food more than anyone I know. He even keeps his own bottle of hot sauce on his desk. 🙂 We thank you for all you do, Jackson! #25thWardChicago #MostDiverseWard #BestStaff #Chinatown
