Fulton Market apartments, St. Boniface condo plan clear key city vote

Lastly, the Commission passed a somewhat unusual zoning amendment “clarifying” that the apartment development at 1350 S. Union Avenue will contain no more than 99 units. The University Village project’s been under construction since early 2017 and is expected to be completed soon.

Fulton Market apartments, St. Boniface condo plan clear key city vote
Thursday's meeting of the Chicago Plan Commission saw a number of new developments approved over the course of the long-more than six hours-and topsy-turvy public hearing. This month's meeting was particularly eventful as nearly two dozen activists interrupting the proceedings to protest the Obama Foundation's lacks of a formalized community benefits agreement with regards to the proposed Obama Presidential Center.

Record Row ... NOT Motor Row

As more and more development and investment continues to flood the South Loop area, I can't help but wonder if anyone will discuss Record Row -- the TRUE identity of what everyone seems to want to brand "Motor Row."

"Record Row" is the more relevant history for this area of Chicago. If the powers that be were smart, the strip along Michigan near McCormick's new 'Entertainment District' should really become a cultural corridor for Chicago, celebrating the historical Jazz and Blues contributions that line that entire strip. Nashville has Broadway Street ... New Orleans has Bourbon Street .... why on earth doesn't Chicago have something similar????

There's a great documentary on this strip if anyone is interested.

    Record Row
Record Row - Was produced by WTTW in Chicago (PBS) and aired in February 1997. I happened to tape it. Lost my tape a few months ago and then discoved that Record Row had disappeared from the earth more or less. Found one copy in a small college's library somewhere in the south but not available for loan.

I feel once we are past the negative perceptions of the area and truly embrace the great history of Bronzeville we will be rewarded in ways that are innumerable, if and when the resources are put in the promotion of what happened here. As a people we have never excluded even as we were not included. What concerns me is that this should be on the front of the consideration of the tourism bureau's investment portfolio, lets consider this area as an asset and as something to present to the World for celebration. If you can have art festivals, rib festivals and so on in the North side neighborhoods, why not have these festivals in the Southside venues.

  • The History and the greatness of Bronzeville is what we have to preserve, if we let this area become anything other than an Historical area then we have lost a great treasure.

Dog waste

Even with gentrification, many people leave their neatly bagged dog waste on the parkway. Why because there aren't garbage cans close to the open areas where many people walk their dogs.
Recently, we were around Chicago & Ogden admiring the architecture of a beautiful old Catholic church. The dogs were in the car. We drove around the corner and let them out for a breather when I had to go back to the car to get a bag to pick up our surprise. Then came the fun part, looking for a garbage can. Drove one stinky block to dispose. Yuk! Many people just go back to their condo, they're not carrying a bag of sh** back home

How can we as a community work on reducing the amount of pet waste in Pilsen? Every block has at least 2 piles of pet waste around my area, 16th to 18th between Halsted and Racine. The alderman signs are not working. At this point, its about getting together as a community because it has gone too far. Not only that, my dog tends to eat the waste. So let's save our community and my dogs breath. Should we encourage businesses and home owners in the area to provide waste bags? I know that it's not their problem, but if we care about our neighborhood, our health, the expense could be ever changing. Beer and alcohol bottles are next. I love the culture, small businesses, and the food carts in the morning. It's a really special place to live. Please. Ideas are welcome!

Becca, unfortunately it is very difficult to educate people of low social responsibility. My neighborhood has seen a large uptick in pet waste clean-up responsibility during the past 5-6 years not due to any other reason than gentrification, unfortunately. As a Latina I had wished differently for years but it is hard to teach an old dog owner new tricks. Many of the people who let their pet waste lay where it was excreted are the very same people who have left the neighborhood. I think there is a soon-to-be-discovered link between intelligence, dog poop clean-up, and the ability to afford one's residence.

  • They should create a dog park so people know where to take their dogs. I know many people like to use the trees planted on the sidewalk, but as you pointed out, don't pick up after themselves.

Women who voted for a man that loathes and uses women, loves crotch grabbing, is on his 3rd wife, who has physically abused his first wife, are blind to reality. There is a long list of negatives about this simple-minded man. They voted for him anyhow. I can see men voting for him, because they have the same views as he does. They are scared of equality. Republican women don't want equality. They are followers, and/or afraid to speak up. Again, I have a list of over 200 anti-female quotes spit out by misogynist Republican males. I'm not going to waste my time posting the rest of them. The few I posted gave you enough info. I will respect Republican women when they begin to respect themselves. I'm closing the book on this conversation.

The L Stop

Each quarter the culinary students at Robert Morris University, 401 S. State Street, open a pop up restaurant with a different theme and menu. Students do everything from selecting the food choices, designing the menu, ordering supplies, cooking, serving and cleaning. This quarter, our theme is "The L Stop" with courses from different neighborhoods of Chicago. Our quarters last ten weeks, but we need the first couple weeks to set up and the last couple to evaluate and critique. Open only on Thursdays, reservations recommended. This is a fantastic experience for our culinary students!

  • This was excellent! My daughters (6 and 9 years old) went today and they also loved it! I recommend it if you can make it.

CADC Fund Raiser - Storytelling Event - Huge Success - thank you!

Community Adult Day Care Center - STORY TELLING EVENT sold out - not a seat OPEN at MAYSLAKE Theater (seats 130) - we had people standing. Many thanks to all of our story tellers (12 in all), to Bruce Wolf - our EMCEE for the evening and to our sponsors and the volunteers that serve on the Board of Directors as well as our Executive Director, Susan Neustrom. All the silent auction items went so as fund raisers go - this was a good one for a very worthy 501c that serves seniors with dementia, Alzheimer's and nerve damage.
